Benchmark test results suggest quad-core Toshiba tablet in works

Benchmark test results suggest quad-core Toshiba tablet in works

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG1

Looks like Toshiba has a quad-core tablet coming, powered by the NVIDIA Tegra 3. Using the code name of "toshiba06", a common early code name for Toshiba tablets, the device was put through the paces at the AnTuTu benchmark web site. The results showed a processor clock speed of 1.4GHz and like the rest of the benchmark test, produced results similar to that scored by the Asus Transformer Prime. Considering that the latter is powered by the NVIDIA Tegra 3, it is possible that the Toshiba unit has the same processor under the hood.

AllThingsD is reporting that Apple is planning a media-related event that will take place at the end of January. It’s said that the event won’t be centered around an iPad 3 announcement, nor one around an update on Apple’s TV hobby, but one with Apples Senior VP of Internet Software Eddy Cue. Because Cue is involved, AllThingsD is concluding that this event is most likely around publishing or advertising.

DV300F point-and-shoot camera adds WiFi to Samsung's front-facing LCD DualView line

Posted on Jan 03, 2012 by MG1

Samsung is extending its "highly popular" DualView point-and-shoot line with a WiFi cam, launching the DV300F today. Consistent with previous models, this latest 16 megapixel snapper includes a 3-inch 460k-dot LCD on the rear, along with a 1.5-inch 61k-dot screen up front. Naturally, a front-facing screen makes self-portraits a snap, while also serving to entertain toddlers with things like an animated clown loop. As for that WiFi connectivity, the DV300F can upload pics directly to sharing sites like Facebook and Picasa, videos to YouTube or the full contents of your card to a PC using the Auto PC Backup function -- there's also a microSD slot for local storage. The DV300F is expected to sh...

MSI Unveils First LED-based All-in-One PC (Wind Top AE2071)

Posted on Jan 03, 2012 by MG1

All-in-one (AIO) PCs are quickly becoming a dime a dozen with little to separate one Sandy Bridge or Fusion model from the next. Credit MSI with finding a way to differentiate its new Wind Top AE2071 model from the rest by supposedly being the first in the industry to use an LED panel. Combined with MSI's "unique energy-saving technology," power consumption is reduced by 30 percent compared to conventional CCFL panels, MSI claims.

HD 7970 Overclocked to 1.26 GHz: 28 nm Tech Really Stretches Its Legs

Posted on Jan 03, 2012 by MG1

It looks like the new AMD Radeon HD 7970 could be a bit of a dark horse and a lot more potent than its stock specifications would suggest – excellent for creating a competitive graphics card market. The reviews at stock speeds show the flagship HD 7970 to be around 10-15% faster than NVIDIA's flagship GTX 580, which doesn't seem all that impressive since the GTX 580 has been on the market for over a year now. However, what the reviews haven't really shown, is what kind of an overclocking monster the HD 7970 is. It definitely looks like AMD could have easily beaten the GTX 580 by a much bigger margin than they did, had they wanted to and it makes one wonder why they didn't.

Leaks: webOS struggled with poor staff, fundamental design

Leaks: webOS struggled with poor staff, fundamental design

Posted on Jan 03, 2012 by MG1

New scoops both public and private have suggested that Palm, and later HP, may have ultimately had hurdles at the corporate level, not just technical, to ever challenging Apple or Google. WebOS didn't have either the needed management or engineers to bring it to completion, a New York Times source said, and there were few WebKit-savvy developers weren't already working on iOS or Android. This was compounded by a rush to finish the OS in nine months, which required taking shortcuts such as skipping proper APIs (app programming interfaces) until later, hurting the ability for third-party developers to sign on.

Latest Version of 64-Bit Firefox Variant 'Waterfox' Available for Download

Latest Version of 64-Bit Firefox Variant 'Waterfox' Available for Download

Posted on Jan 03, 2012 by MG1

Mozilla keeps churning out a new Firefox stable build every six weeks, having switched to a rapid release schedule earlier this year. But amid the constant changes, there is one thing that still remains untouched by its current release schedule. There is still no official 64-bit build of the browser.
With Firefox being a free and open-source browser, third-party 64-bit builds based on the Firefox source code aren't all that hard to find. Waterfox is one such 64-bit Firefox derivative. In fact, it claims to be the “fastest 64-bit variant of Firefox.” As you’d expect, each new Firefox release leads to a corresponding Waterfox release. So when Firefox 9 became available last week, it was also t...

Asus Transformer Prime bootloader is locked, say xda devs

Asus Transformer Prime bootloader is locked, say xda devs

Posted on Jan 03, 2012 by MG1

As if Asus didn't have enough software headaches with the Transformer Prime already, it's now added one entirely of its own making: an angry homebrew community that has just discovered that the Prime's bootloader is encrypted. A 128-bit encryption key stands between eager Prime modders and the ability to load custom ROMs of their own, which has been greeted with an understandable mix of disgust and frustration.
HTC was the most recent other company to dabble with encryption-locked bootloaders, which incited enough of a customer backlash for CEO Peter Chou to personally reverse course and promise that bootloaders on all recent HTC phones would be set free. Inspired by that course of events, t...

PlayStation Vita hack prints 'hello world' via PSP emulator

PlayStation Vita hack prints 'hello world' via PSP emulator

Posted on Jan 03, 2012 by MG1

Any time a new console is released, a global countdown begins until the first intrepid hacker breaks its armor and gains control over its internal hardware and features. The race is now on to crack the recently-released PlayStation Vita, and at least one hacker has shown that code can be executed on the handheld by printing "hello world" and displaying some festive lights on the screen — but that doesn't mean the Vita has been compromised. That's because these exploits aren't actually accessing the Vita's native hardware, but rather running inside the PSP emulator that allows users to play downloadable PSP games. It's hard to say if there's any way to break through the walls of that sandbox ...

Dropbox Automator triggers monotonous tasks with the uploading of a file

Posted on Jan 03, 2012 by MG1

There are plenty of tools and apps out there that automate the essential computing tasks that face us every day. Some are time consuming others are simply monotonous -- but they must be done. Dropbox Automator combines time-saving task mastery with perhaps our favorite cloud storage solution. The service watches a designated folder for uploads, when a new file is added an action is triggered -- everything from converting documents, to resizing an image or tweeting a link. And that's just scratching the surface. There are already plenty of automation scripts in the fledgling service's repertoire and devs can add there own by creating a SOAP webservice. Hit up the source link to get started no...

Facebook hands out VISA debit cards to security researchers

Posted on Jan 03, 2012 by MG1

I have always thought that the “white hat security researchers” that find a flaw in a site or application that is commonly use and then go directly public so nefarious sorts can take advantage of the flaw before it is patched are doing it wrong. Facebook does too and if you want to get the big money that finding a flaw or security issue with Facebook pays out you have to keep the flaw secret until it is patched. Facebook is handing out debit cards to the researchers that find bugs.

Sluggish Demand for PlayStation Vita in Japan

Sluggish Demand for PlayStation Vita in Japan

Posted on Jan 03, 2012 by MG1

A new report coming out of Japan has raised a few eyebrows in regards to Sony's latest attempt to recapture the gaming spotlight. According to new figures, after just one week of strong sales, demand for the device has plummeted in Japan, usually one of its strongest markets.
The new numbers come via Japanese research site Media Create Co., which claims Sony only sold 72,479 units during the week ending Dec. 25, a steep drop off from the device's debut sales of approximately 324,859 units. While the numbers are not backed by official Sony figures, and the company has declined to comment on the research firm's numbers, the message is nevertheless clear: the PlayStation Vita may be offering mo...
