Belkin reveals Advance N900 DB router, keeps your MW3 marathon top priority with IntelliStream

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG15

Belkin has added another wireless networking kit to it's N-series lineup here at CES. The company has announced its Advance N900 DB, a dual band WiFi router capable of 450Mbps speeds per band. Featuring six MultiBeam antennas, the tech makes watching Hulu Plus from your basement much easier and looks to cut down on those pesky dead spots. Also outfitted with IntelliStream, the device automatically prioritizes video and gaming streams and houses a 600MHz multi-thread processor that multitasks across all networked devices. For connected storage or wireless printers, the N900 packs two USB 2.0 ports enabling access to those peripherals from workstations other than your desk. If you're looking t...

Canon PowerShot G1 X announced: 1.5-inch sensor, ISO 12,800 for $799.99 in February

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG3

Canon's G series has long been the company's flagship point-and-shoot line, and the PowerShot G1 X the company just announced might be the best yet. The 14.3-megapixel shooter has a 1.5-inch (18.7 x 14mm) sensor, bigger than a Micro Four Thirds sensor and nearly as large as the APS-C sensors inside most DSLRs. (It's also 6.3 times larger than the sensor inside the PowerShot G12.) Canon says it's the largest sensor ever in a PowerShot camera, which might also explain why the G1 X is much more expensive than a typical point-and-shoot — it'll set you back $799.99 when it goes on sale in February. There's plenty inside for your money, though: ISO range up to 12,800, aperture range from f/2.8 to ...

Lenovo outs IdeaCentre B340 and B540 all-in-ones, H520s and IdeaCentre K430 towers

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG1

Ultrabooks might be the belle of the ball at this year's CES, but that doesn't mean you won't see a few desktops thrown in for variety's sake. Lenovo just unveiled a quartet of stationary machines, including two towers and a pair of touchscreen all-in-ones. Beginning with those touchscreens, the IdeaCentre B340 and B540 are essentially the same system, except the former has a 21.5-inch screen and the latter expands to 23. Both have 1080p displays and can be configured with up to 8GB of RAM and 2TB of storage, an optional Blu-ray drive and 3D tech. The only variation in specs, so far as we can tell, is that the 21.5-inch version maxes out with a 1GB NVIDIA GeForce 615M card, whereas for the 2...

Canon's VIXIA camcorders go social for the new year, get improved low-light performance

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG3

It's the most wonderful horrible gadgety time of the year -- it's CES time. And that means dozens, nay, hundreds of companies issuing annual refreshes of their product lines. Canon is amongst the legions launching upgrades and its VIXIA line of digital camcorders are not getting left behind. The company's M and R lines are both getting refreshes for 2012 that include boatloads of enhanced connectivity -- including the ability to share over WiFi and DLNA. They can even connect to an iPad or iPhone and directly post clips to YouTube and Facebook using the Movie Uploader app. Under the hood is an all new CMOS sensor that has improved low-light performance and the HF M-series has selectable scen...

Optoma's giving the shrink ray treatment to two of its latest pico projectors, debuting at CES 2012 today. Its micro stablemate, the ML300, weighs in at a heavier 1.4lbs, but ups the widescreen format quality to 1280 x 800, in addition to bumping display size to 160-inches and delivering 300 lumens of brightness. Both of the company's mini offerings pack 2GB of storage (expandable to 32GB via microSD), an IR remote, charger, carry pouch and offer support for MS Office, as well as an array of ports -- like mini-HDMI, VGA-in, composite A/V and micro-USB. Canon swings by the North Pole on the way to CES, grows the ELPH family by two

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG3

Not taking cues from a certain other manufacturer that unveiled well over a dozen models last week, Canon is adding just two cameras to its PowerShot ELPH family, in addition to the just-announced PowerShot G1 X. The 10.1 megapixel ELPH 520 HS and 16 megapixel ELPH 110 HS both include high-sensitivity CMOS sensors, sensitivity up to ISO 3200, 1080p video capture and 3-inch LCDs. The pricier 520 HS has a 12x wide-angle (28mm) optical zoom lens and can capture burst images at 6.8 frames-per-second, while the 110HS has a 5x optical zoom lens starting at 24mm at the wide angle and can snap up to 5.8 frames per second.

Toshiba prototype ultrabook shows Windows 8 specs

Toshiba prototype ultrabook shows Windows 8 specs

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG1

We just got through with a hands-on look at Toshiba’s latest ultrabook, this time an unnamed prototype model with a 14 inch screen. The notable thing about it isn’t the hardware (which, we admit, is pretty awesome) but the early version of Windows 8 that’s running on it. Have a peek below and see what Toshiba has in mind for 2012.

Huawei outs super-thin Ascend P1 S smartphone, raised entirely on fruit and veg

Huawei outs super-thin Ascend P1 S smartphone, raised entirely on fruit and veg

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: Cell PhonesHuawei

Huawei has been up to some impressive stuff lately, so we're not totally shocked to see this top-spec phone reveal itself at CES. Perhaps the Ascend P1 S's most surprising attribute is its thickness -- a mere 6.68mm (0.26-inches), which would let it glide past the 7.1mm Droid RAZR with barely a slice in the air. The screen is 4.3-inches along the diagonal, qHD 540 x 960, and -- to HTC's shame -- it claims to be Super AMOLED. There's a dual-core TI OMAP 4460 inside, clocked at 1.5GHz and accompanied by a SGX 540 GPU, which should be plenty sufficient to record 1080p video on the eight megapixel backside-illuminated camera. As if that wasn't enough, the Chinese manufacturer has also taken the ...

Beginning in March, Wemo will launch in the US with a $49.99 Home Control Switch and $59.99 Motion Sensor module in addition to a free mobile app for an unspecified platform(s).

Microsoft Research's 'WiFi-NC' taps unused TV spectrum for improved wireless connectivity

Microsoft Research's 'WiFi-NC' taps unused TV spectrum for improved wireless connectivity

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: Microsoft

Researchers at Microsoft have developed a new variant of Wi-Fi that allows wireless transmissions to operate at top speeds even in the face of interference. They're calling it "WiFi-NC" — NC for narrow channel — and it works by taking advantage of unused slivers of the television broadcast spectrum. A collection of smaller transmitters and receivers utilize these sections of spectrum, known as "white spaces," and collectively are able to provide the same bandwidth that a traditional wide-channel Wi-Fi radio offers. Since each of these transmitters can hop between the white spaces discretely, the chance for direct interference is lessened, providing transmissions much closer to theoretical li...

Ubuntu TV has Unity-inspired UI, will ship on televisions by end of 2012

Ubuntu TV has Unity-inspired UI, will ship on televisions by end of 2012

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG3

The surprise was ruined, but Canonical is indeed bringing a TV to CES. But it's not about hardware just yet: Ubuntu TV is a brand new derivitave of Ubuntu, with a full-in TV-optimized UI inspired by Unity, and full-on media center and DVR features. There's a movie, TV and music store, a YouTube app, and of course it's all optimized for a lean-back remote experience. The software will be free for manufacturers to package with their TVs, and Ubuntu says there will be TVs on shelves by the end of the year. Canonical sees itself as a "neutral player," as opposed to the walled gardens of Apple and Google. Linux-based media center OSs are nothing new, but Ubuntu has enough clout to get this on the...

Maingear says it will offer the AMD Radeon HD 7970 in its Shift, F131 and Vybe desktops

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG3

When AMD announced its latest flagship, the Radeon HD 7970, we knew it was fast and efficient (because reviewers said so!), but gamers were told they'd have to wait until the new year to try it themselves. Now, precisely on schedule, the card is available for purchase, and we're starting to hear word of systems that will be refreshed to include the 28nm card. Maingear just said that it will offer the 7970 inside its Shift and F131 desktops, followed by the Vybe at some later date. If you recall, the card has a 925MHz engine that can be overclocked to 1.1GHz, 2,048 stream processors and an unusual 384-bit memory bus serving 3GB of GDDR5 -- not to mention, it's capable of a mere 3W power draw ...

Lenovo S2 smartphone promises super-security

Lenovo has taken the wraps off of its S2 smartphone, an Android handset that the company reckons is significantly more secure than rival devices thanks to kernel-level encryption. That security protects personal information, helps avoid phishing apps and controls network and SMS traffic to prevent malware racking up your monthly bill; however, unlike the IdeaTab S2 10 tablet and K91 smart TV, the S2 only runs Gingerbread, not Ice Cream Sandwich.

Sony has axed its home OLED TV plans, ceasing production of domestic-focused sets using the organic light-emitting diode technology, and focusing on LCD panels moving forward. The news – coming as both Samsung and LG prepare to unveil OLED HDTVs at CES 2012 this week – is the latest stage in Sony’s huge overhaul of its ailing home entertainment business, Yomiuri reports, short-comings of which are expected to contribute to $1.15bn in losses in the most recent financial quarter.
