Apple chooses Pegatron to make iPad 3, March shipments
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAppleiPad 3
Pegatron Technology has reportedly received a small volume of orders for the upcoming iPad 3, which is set to launch in March, according to Digitimes. Apple has reportedly revamped the company’s outsourcing strategy and will have Pegatron focus on production of the iPad series, with Foxconn serving serving as an auxiliary in 2013. Foxconn‘s primary focus will be the iPhone, with Pegatron only producing a small number of smartphones. The new strategy is meant to decrease risk and increase the quality of products, according to the report. The Cupertino-based company has already visited Pegatron‘s plants in China several times. The publication also claimed that Pegatron is expected to see a “si...

Better late than never: Samsung Captivate finally gets its Gingerbread update
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungCaptivate
For all the worn out Samsung Captivate owners out there, today is the day. The update from Android 2.2 Froyo to the Gingerbread goodness is finally out, and you can stop the nail-biting.
We certainly kid, but the update has really taken a while, while the world has moved on to Android 4.0 ICS. Samsung, however, said it is not planning to bring ICS to the Galaxy S and its versions, so Gingerbread will be your last snack with the Samsung Captivate, if you decide to keep it to the end of your two-year contract.

In a fully green-lit environment on the first full day of CES 2012, NVIDIA’s Jen-Hsng Huang outlined their 2012 focus, and all was quad-core. The event began with Huang speaking about how they’d be moving through Tablets, a secret additional feature of Tegra 3, and vehicle integration. As tablets are, as evidence shows, the quickest selling device category in mobile history, so too will NVIDIA continue to concentrate on the category for their hero devices.
For the tablets, Huang noted that a big moment in Android was the moment it was revealed that Gingerbread and Honeycomb were combined in Ice Cream Sandwich. All the devices now, he reminds us, are in one single platform. Content developers...

Face Unlock app created for iOS
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
This is why we love developers. Face Unlock is a cool feature on Android 4.0 (though it does have debatable value because of security flaws), and we don't have to wait for Apple to implement its own solution because a Romanian developer has already built it.
Visually, the app is a wholesale ripoff of Face Unlock for Android, although the developer has claimed he built it from scratch. The app works just like Face Unlock for Android, although it is noticeably slower to react when scanning the user's face. And, just like in Android, it will bump you to a pattern unlock if it doesn't recognize your face.

Telus announces Samsung Galaxy Note launch, LTE in Q1
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGALAXY Note
Well here's some pretty fab news: the Samsung Galaxy Note is en route to Canada and that network will boast LTE sometime this quarter. The LTE launch alone gives us tingles up our spines, but coupled with this useful little handset, we're overjoyed. Telus, however, didn't provide any information on the exact date of the Note's launch nor even a hint of what it might cost, but we'd expect that'll come tumbling our way soon. In the interim, have a peek at the press info, our hands-on and give our first impressions a read, won't you?

Nuance brings its Dragon Go! voice assistant to Android
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Voice control is a growing mobile trend and Nuance is one of the leaders in this field. It has a variety of mobile products including Dragon Go!, a voice assistant that launched on iOS last year and is now available for Android.
Dragon Go! is a search assistant that lets you talk to your phone and find information. It’s like Google Voice Search for Android, but supports a lot more commands. You can ask it to find the times for a film that’s showing in a local theatre or name what plane is flying overhead. It uses Nuance’s refined voice recognition algorithm and a variety of back-end services including Google search, Wolfram Alpha, Yelp and more.

Sony Xperia S has PlayStation certification and 720p display, available this quarter
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSonyXperia S
One of Sony's inaugural batch of Sony-branded phones, the Xperia S is the device that had been rumored over the last few weeks as the Nozomi with a 4.3-inch 720p display. Today it's been officially announced, and the specs are designed to impress: besides the gap-free laminated Reality Display, the Xperia S features a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, a 12-megapixel Exmor R camera sensor, NFC support, PlayStation certification, and a unique "transparent element" along the bottom that offsets the solid black face. On paper, the phone is quite similar to AT&T's Xperia Ion — also announced today — but it lacks the Ion's LTE support (a sign of its European focus) and uses a slightly smaller display.

Olympus refreshes point-and-shoot camera range
Like UnlikeFiled in: CamerasOlympusTough TG-320VG-160SP-620UZSZ-12VR-340
The camera buzz at this year's CES has so far been with earthshakingly expensively models, but if the likes of the Nikon D4, Canon G1 X and Fujifilm X-Pro1 are too rich for your blood Olympus might have your back with its refreshed compact camera line. The company announced five new models — the $199.99 SZ-12 and SP-620 ultrazooms, $179.99 durable TG-320, $149.99 slimline VR-340, and $99.99 entry-level VG-160. We thought the SZ-12 was the pick of the bunch, fitting a 24x (24-600mm equivalent) zoom lens into a small body that felt comfortable in the hand. All five models feature Olympus's Magic Art Filters, which are all the rage on compacts these days in the face of encroaching smartphone co...

SanDisk unveils 'world's fastest' 128GB SDXC card and new iNAND Ultra embeddable flash storage
Like UnlikeFiled in: SanDisk
There's no time better to announce new storage cards than at CES -- there's just so many new toys to plug them into. SanDisk's new SDXC card is available in both 64GB and 128GB sizes, with the latter capable of packing in around 10 hours of HD 3D video. Both cards will boast read speeds of around 45 megabytes per second -- the 'world's fastest', we're told, but that could be a heady claim during the high-speed turnaround of CES. No date's been offered up yet for when they'll hit stores, but when they do, expect the 128GB beast to set you back a feisty $400, while the 64GB card will ask your wallet for $200.
Meanwhile, fans of the embeddable kind can expect to see iNAND Ultra make itself know...

Ice Cream Sandwich Tastes Pretty Good To Samsung
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsSamsungGoogleAndroid 4.0
When consumers are faced with the question of "do I get an iPhone or something else?" a greater percentage of them now associate the "something else" side of the equation as Samsung.
Changewave Research asked 4,000 consumers in North America who were planning on buying a smartphone in the next 90 days which manufacturer they would most likely choose.
Of course, Apple (aka, the iPhone) was at the top of the list. In the December study, more than half, 54%, of those surveyed said the iPhone was the next smartphone on their mind.

Israel likens hacker to terrorist for exposing 400,000 credit cards
Like UnlikeLast week, a hacker known as "0xOmar" (also being mistakenly reported as OxOmar by most news media) took credit for publishing an illicit bounty of 400,000 credit card numbers, a claim yet to be fully corroborated by news agencies. On Friday, Israeli officials condemned the action as a form of terrorism and made a provocative claim that no hostile actor is immune to the country's potential retaliation.

Verizon launches BlackBerry Curve 9370
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryVerizon WirelessCurve 9370
If all the Windows Phone and Android news isn't really striking your fancy and iPhones hold no appeal then, perhaps, your interest will be piqued by the BlackBerry Curve 9370 which was just announced. Verizon unveiled the latest budget-friendly RIM device for CES and it doesn't depart too much from the QWERTY, candybar mold. In addition to CDMA radios it's also got GSM for globetrotters and NFC for those that want to hop on the next wave of mobile payment tech. Around the back is a 5-megapixel camera, probably not capable of shooting 1080p. The 9370 will run you $99 with a two year contract after a $50 mail-in rebate. And, most importantly, it'll be upgradeable to BlackBerry OS 7.1 -- the mo...

We've seen it teased, prodded and leaked, but now it's officially official. Motorola's taking the Droid Razr family to the limit one more time with the Maxx. According to the company, the model retains that "impossibly thin" shape we've all come to know and love at 8.99mm, but manages to squeeze in extended battery life, giving you 21 hours on a charge. The Maxx packs 32GB of storage and will run you a cool $300 plus the requisite two-year contract.

London 2012 Olympics volunteers won't be tweeting freely
Like UnlikeVolunteers at this year's Summer Olympic Games in London are going to be subject to some pretty stringent restrictions on their use of social media, reports the BBC. London 2012 "Games Makers" won't be allowed to reveal their location, post backstage photos or give any information about the whereabouts of VIPs. They are also restricted from speaking to the press without permission, or engaging in "detailed discussion" about the Games online. UK sports stars are used to such restrictions during major events — the England soccer team was banned from Twitter during the 2010 World Cup, for example — but this is the first time we've heard of such clampdowns extending to people off the field.
