Kindle Fire firmware update 6.2.2 brings full-screen browsing
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAmazonKindle Fire
The fine folks over at Amazon have further flushed out the firmware on its fiercely popular Fire tablet. Upgrading your Kindle Fire to version 6.2.2 will bring a handful of small performance tweaks, bugs fixes and, most notably, add a full-screen mode to the device's Silk browser. If you've gone ahead and rooted your Fire, applying the firmware bump will kill superuser access -- although a fresh build of BurritoRoot 2 should get you back on the straight and narrow. The new code is being pushed out over-the-air as we type, while those that enjoy the endorphin rush associated with instant gratification -- and know how to manually update a Kindle -- can find a link to the 6.2.2 firmware file be...

Casio focus group hints at quad-core 4G phone, more
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesCasio
A focus group member claimed Wednesday to have been asked to give feedback on devices revealing at least some of its plans for the near future, most of which were for Verizon. The range-topping device purportedly identified by a Droid-Life reader would be very different than the rugged phones Casio usually ships, carrying a 4.5- or 4.7-inch Super AMOLED screen, a quad-core processor, LTE-based 4G, NFC wireless, and eight-megapixel back and two-megapixel front cameras. It would have a large-capacity 2,000mAh battery and ran the "latest Android," which looked to the reader to be Android 4.0.

Kodak files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
Like UnlikeFiled in: KODAK
Patent lawsuits won't save Kodak from an overhaul, it seems: as predicted, the photography company just announced that it's filed for bankruptcy. Kodak says it's voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 reorganization in New York, in order to "bolster liquidity in the U.S. and abroad, monetize non-strategic intellectual property, fairly resolve legacy liabilities, and enable the Company to focus on its most valuable business lines." It's also tentatively obtained $950 million in debtor-in-possession credit so it can keep operating while it formally goes bankrupt: the company says it expects to keep paying employees, serving customers and honoring obligations for the time being.

Android 4.0 for Tablets shouldn’t be judged until it’s released
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsGoogleAndroid 4.0
Last week it was announced that the Transformer Prime would be the first certified tablet to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, then today the XOOM ICS update began rolling out, but there’s one judgement article out there produced by a high-ranking set of names which has passed judgement on it for those who would take their for granted that they know all about it from their 2 minutes of playtime. What they say, as it were, is that they know a guy with a Motorola tablet who has Ice Cream Sandwich on it and told them that it wasn’t very good. They then say they were at CES and spoke with a less than knowledgeable presenter who didn’t know ICS from Honeycomb.

It’s believed to be a digital textbook publishing tool or a “GarageBand for eBooks,” a project that Steve Jobs himself worked on for several years before his death. And now, tips from AppleInsider reveal some more details about the project, including that it’s internally code-named “Bliss.”

PS Vita sales crash in post holiday slump
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPSVITA
Sony's PS Vita hasn't been out in Japan very long, launching in December 2011, however after a promising start its sales have plummeted, dropping to 18,361 in week five.
Although you'd expect a steady decline in sales after any big launch the week five figures constitute a 95 per cent drop on the very decent week one figures of 324,859. This is a serious bit of free fall for the console and sullies the PS Vita's 500,000 units-sold milestone.

Stephen Elop has told Pocket-lint that he thinks Google's Android operating system is too fragmented, a pitfall he wants to avoid with Windows Phone 7 and Nokia in the future.

"We don't want fragmentation being introduced into Windows Phone because we are beginning to see how in a certain other eco-system that fragmentation becomes a problem."

Asus Transformer Prime update improves GPS performance?
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsASUSEee Pad Transformer Prime TF201
The latest twist in the Asus Transformer Prime saga is here, with an over-the-air firmware update that supposedly goes some way to improving the tablet's much-maligned GPS performance by updating the driver — if posters on xda-developers are to be believed. We'll have to get our own confirmation of this, as a teardown of the Prime and subsequent announcement of a redesigned model seemed to indicate that the GPS issues were inherent to the hardware design. One thing the update definitely does seem to do is break root access for anyone who's that way inclined, though it looks like it's simple enough to get it back. In any case, we'd exercise caution, and will let you know our own impressions o...

Virgin Mobile USA to begin throttling unlimited data over 2.5GB in March
Like UnlikeVirgin Mobile USA, Sprint's value-brand subsidiary, is going through with a plan to enact data throttling beginning on March 23rd. Users on "Beyond Talk Plans" who download more than 2.5GB of data during their billing cycle will see their download speeds drop to a glacial 256Kpbs until their plan refreshes. As it's a month-to-month, no-contract plan, users can re-up immediately once the throttling goes into effect if they'd like to bring their speeds back up to normal.

GIGABYTE Releases its First Entry-Level Motherboard with Dual-UEFI BIOS
Like UnlikeFiled in: MotherboardsGIGABYTEGA-H61MA-D3V (rev. 2.0)
After trying to avoid UEFI BIOS by sticking to "HybridEFI" workarounds to its existing AwardBIOS code on most of its socket LGA1155 and AM3+ motherboards, GIGABYTE reluctantly transitioned to UEFI with its socket LGA2011 motherboards, on which it fused its innovative Dual-BIOS technology with UEFI to come up with Dual-UEFI technology. One can imagine this to be particularly tough to implement on lower-end models, since UEFI with graphical setup program requires higher-capacity EEPROM chips, and since Dual-UEFI would need two, it would stress component costs, but GIGABYTE did it anyway.
