Kindle Fire Could Be More Profitable Than Expected

Kindle Fire Could Be More Profitable Than Expected

Posted on Jan 20, 2012 by MG1

Amazon's Kindle Fire, released in November, may wind up being more profitable than was expected, thanks to users' penchant for purchasing digital goods, according to a new research report from RBC Capital.
Though Amazon actually eats a loss of an estimated $18 for every Kindle sold due to manufacturing costs and other factors, the company makes up for it through sales of ebooks and apps, according to the report. Based on survey of 216 Kindle Fire Owners, RBC analysts estimated that over the course of three years, each Kindle Fire sold could earn Amazon $136.
"Amazon will break even on a Kindle Fire unit in less than five months, accounting only for direct digital good purchases," the report ...

Intel Q4 revenue beats estimates, netbook interest continues to crater

Intel Q4 revenue beats estimates, netbook interest continues to crater

Posted on Jan 20, 2012 by MG1

Intel lowered its revenue forecast in December, anticipating a drop due to hard drive shortages caused by the flooding in Thailand. Today the numbers hit, and it turns out the company actually beat its own estimates. Intel reported $13.9 billion in revenue for the quarter — its reduced estimate had come in at $13.7 billion — up 21 percent from the same time last year. While a pleasant surprise given the circumstances, the figure still represents a two percent drop compared to Q3 of this year, owing to decreased sequential revenues from its PC Client Group, as well as rapidly-dwindling interest in netbooks. The company's Atom line was the worst offender, with revenues dropping 38 percent from...

MIT researchers could speed up file compression using an improved Fourier transform algorithm

MIT researchers could speed up file compression using an improved Fourier transform algorithm

Posted on Jan 20, 2012 by MG1

A group of MIT researchers believe they've found a way to speed up audio, video, and image compression by improving on the Fourier transform. If you're not familiar with the method, it provides a way for complex signals to be broken into their composite parts and then recompiled. It was improved on in the mid-60s with the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithm, which, as the name suggests, made the whole process much quicker and practical to use. FFT has been used in compression and other fields already — once you split up a transmission into its composite parts, you can forget the less important frequencies and just send along the major players, reducing file sizes. This works for compressi...

While Apple's Eddy Cue said the new iTunes U app was designed to look a lot like iBooks 2, the app is strictly a portal for accessing all types of educational materials, including a class syllabus, full course notes and videos, as well as iBooks notes.

Following AT&T’s lead, T-Mobile will soon be offering new 5GB and 10GB data plans for a limited time. In a purported internal memo acquired by TmoNews, the carrier will begin offering the new plans starting January 25th. The Unlimited-Premium 5GB and Unlimited-Ultra 10GB plans will both include a free mobile hotspot and cloud storage, which normally costs $20 per month. The promo will be available to both new and existing customers, however the memo states that in order “to protect T-Mobile revenue” reps should “not proactively offer the bundled features to customers already on a 5 GB data feature who do not want additional data.”

Verizon's Droid RAZR gets violet coat of paint, price tumbles to $200 on contract

Posted on Jan 20, 2012 by MG1

Motorola has already unveiled the RAZR's bigger, battery-savvy brother, the Maxx, but it's not yet done with the original kevlar-skinned smartphone. Yes, the RAZR will get a color palette refresh for the new year, with Verizon readying a metallic purple edition for just under $200 -- that's a hundred bucks less than what Big Red hopes you'll lay down for the newer Maxx. Like its white and black siblings, it will shed the 16GB SD card that arrived with the first issue RAZR, leaving 16GB of built-in storage. You'll be able to ogle at that puce wafer-thin profile when it arrives on January 23rd. Verizon's self-congratulatory fanfare is after the break.

Yahoo has frozen its hiring process and may even consider layoffs according to a new report. The news was revealed by AllThingsD on Thursday, which wrote that the choices were made ahead of expected weak fourth quarter earnings. Yahoo isn’t considering mass layoffs, however; instead, AllThingsD said they are likely to be “small and selective” if they happen at all. Yahoo experienced a bit of turmoil earlier this week when co-founder, former CEO and board member Jerry Yang resigned from the company. AllThingsD said other board members may be considering leaving the company, too. Yahoo will report its fourth quarter earnings next Tuesday.
