ARM Doesn't See Intel as a Competitive Threat
Like UnlikeFiled in: CPUIntel
Following Intel's announcement of its Medfield smartphone processor for 2012 commercial products, ARM played down the potential impact of Intel's debut product and Intel's competitive strength. In an article posted by Digitimes, Jeff Chu, ARM's director of consumer, client computing, implied that Intel cannot succeed because it does not offer different products for different purposes. As a result, Intel cannot support the needs of market segmentation, ARM said.

Galaxy S III is a quad-core-packing,12 megapixel-toting beast set for MWC
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S III
While we already figured the Samsung Galaxy S III would be announced during Mobile World Congress next month, a tweet from Eldar Murtazin has further confirmed this, along with a few specs of the handset.Everything mentioned seems to be what we’d expect from Samsung for its next flagship device but we hadn’t heard that the handset would be rocking a 12 megapixel camera, even from rumors, until now. Given that HTC and Sony have already announced handsets with 16 and 12 megapixel cameras, it’s looking like the start of a new trend. With ridiculous camera sensors found on mobile phones today, we wish that some manufacturer would squeeze in a Xenon flash at some point.

Last fall, Sony confirmed that its entire 2011 Xperia portfolio would receive an Android 4.0 update at a later date. Phones set to get the Ice Cream Sandwich update include the Xperia Arc, Arc S, Play, Neo, Neo V, Mini, Mini Pro, Active and Ray, as well as Sony Ericsson’s Live Walkman.

Sprint's move to roaming agreements sends AT&T to angry town
Like UnlikeFiled in: AT&TSprint
Despite all Sprint's efforts to promote its Network Vision plans, the carrier has been much more coy about its intentions for subscribers in the rural midwest. It was recently revealed that the company plans to divest some of its infrastructure in Oklahoma and Kansas, where the carrier will instead rely on roaming agreements for voice and data. The move is primarily a cost-cutting measure, but one network -- AT&T -- is none too happy about the revelation. Ma Bell argues that Sprint is being too opportunistic following the FCC's shuttering of the Home Market Rule, which (once upon a time) required carriers to build up infrastructure rather than rely on roaming agreements in areas where they h...

Nokia fined in Australia for spamming customers with text messages
Like UnlikeFiled in: NOKIA
The Australian Communications and Media Authority has fined Nokia for sending spam-filled text messages to its customers. Nokia had been sending messages with tips on how customers could take advantage of their phones’ features, Reuters said Tuesday, but the government agreed Nokia should allow its customers to opt out of receiving the messages. ”Some businesses are still not getting SMS marketing right,” Australian Communications and Media Authority chairman Richard Bean told Reuters. “The same rules apply to SMS marketing as for email marketing, and the same rules apply to all businesses, big and small.”

App Store developers have received $4 billion from Apple
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
In June 2010, after two years of the App Store being in operation, Apple announced it had paid out $1 billion to developers. By last summer, that number had more than doubled to $2.5 billion paid. By the time the Apple iPhone 4S had launched last October, the cumulative figure paid to developers had risen to $3 billion. To get to that figure, at that point Apple had sold 250 million iOS powered devices and 18 billion apps had been installed on the platform. The latest quarter has seen the Cupertino based firm cut a check to developers for $700,000 which brings the cumulative total to more than $4 billion.

Droid Razr Maxx Official for January 26th for $299
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesMotorolaDROID RAZR MAXX
Verizon and Motorola turned some heads at CES 2012 when they announced an update to the just released Droid Razr, the Droid Razr Maxx. Verizon has finally cut short the waiting game and announced that the Maxx is out on January 26 for $299 on-contract. To the great annoyance of Razr owners, the Maxx brings some notable spec bumps, and sells for the same price users paid for the first Razr a few months ago.
The Droid Razr Maxx has 16GB of internal storage, as well as a massive boost in battery capacity to 3,300mAh. The original Razr rocked just a 1780mAh cell. Like the first Razr, the battery in the Maxx is non-removable and hidden behind a kevlar back. The trade off is that the Razr Maxx is...

Ubuntu Looks To Replace Traditional Menus With New "HUD" Interface
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsLinuxUbuntu
Windows 8 isn't the only upcoming operating system that's kicking traditional GUI models to the curb. Ubuntu Linux is getting in on the paradigm-breaking action with the introduction of "The HUD" (yes, that means Heads-Up Display) in the next version of Ubuntu. No, Ubuntu's HUD has nothing to do with tracking ammo or teammates; instead, it's a new "Vocabulary UI" that aims to crush, kill and eventually replace the standard file menus we've used for over 30 years.

Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksASUSB23E
With just about as little fanfare as possible, Asus has posted information on a new ultraportable laptop, the B23E. Coming in with a 12.5-inch, 1366 x 768 screen, it's available with a variety of configuration options from an Intel Core i3 with a 320GB hard drive on up to a Core i7, 8GB of RAM, and a 750GB/7200rpm drive. Although the 3.4-pound design doesn't inspire, it is arrayed with a decent set of default ports and options, including USB 3.0, HDMI, Express Card, Bluetooth, fingerprint scanner, and an SD card reader. The battery is only a three-cell, 4,400mAh and the 2-megapixel webcam certainly isn't anything special, but they are at least encased in a magnesium-aluminum alloy body. A mi...
