YouTube surpasses 4 billion video views per day
Like UnlikeGoogle recently confirmed that YouTube now receives more than 4 billion video views per day. Reuters reported the news Monday morning and noted that the site has seen a 25% increase in videos viewed per day since May. Google, which owns YouTube, also confirmed that there are more than 60 hours of fresh video uploaded each minute, up from the 48 hours of video added per minute in May. Advertisements on videos generate roughly $5 billion in revenue each year, Reuters said, but just 3 billion videos feature ads each week. The growth in viewership was attributed to users accessing the service from smartphones and televisions.

Fake Chrome browser scamming users in Marketplace
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
While the Marketplace certifiers may be good at keeping out malware (and we don’t really know this for sure either) they are certainly not good at keeping out crapware.
The latest is a fake Google Chrome browser, which the description boldly claims:
Keep Chrome Browser handy on your device, especially for those unavoidable times you are on a slow crowded network, away from Wi-Fi. This app is same as a google chrome web browser. It has most stylish search button. Facebook, Google, Yahoo! -with Chrome Browser, all your favorite sites work great on your windows phone.
The app is in fact simply an IE Shell and will work no better or worse than the built-in browser.

LG Optimus 3D 2 images leak
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesLGOptimus 3D
Images and specs of a new LG phone codenamed the “CX2″ were recently leaked. The phone is thought to possibly be the successor to the Optimus 3D and may be unveiled during the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona next month. Pocketnow, which leaked the image and specs, says the CX2 sports a dual-core Texas Instruments processor clocked at 1.2GHz, a NOVA display capable of displaying 3D content, a 5-megapixel camera capable of snapping 3D photos, 8GB of storage, Bluetooth 3.0, NFC and support for 21Mbps HSPA+ networks. The phone could launch as soon as this spring, but unfortunately the phone is said to run on Google’s older Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) operating system rather than Ice ...

Cydia-style app store for Android coming soon
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Google’s open approach with the Android platform means developers can build applications that make use of parts of the operating system that iOS developers can’t even consider if they hope to get their apps approved for distribution through Apple’s App Store. Even still, however, there are a number of Android developers with apps that have been banned from Google’s Android Market for various reasons. While iOS developers looking to get around Apple’s strict policies can turn to Cydia, the third-party app store available to jailbreakers, Android developers with banned apps do not have a centralized location through which they can distribute their wares — but that will soon change. Android dev...

Apple reportedly burned $100 million on patent spat with HTC
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleHTC
Apple is said to have spent as much as $100 million on its first round of legal battles with HTC, and the company has precious little to show for it. Newsweek’s well-sourced Dan Lyons cited “a rumor going around among the lawyers” in reporting the staggering figure on his personal blog, and he noted that Apple’s onslaught of lawsuits around the world have yielded precious little for the Cupertino, California based technology giant. Meaningful wins have been few and far between for Apple in its ongoing legal battles against Android vendors. The company did score a victory last month when the International Trade Commission banned the import of several HTC smartphones it deemed to be infringing...

PayPal plans to buck credit card companies with more In-Store Payments
Like UnlikePayPal plans to let shoppers pay with its service in more than 2,000 stores as part of an effort to win away customers from credit-card companies. This push for mobile probably shouldn’t be surprising, as we know that its owners eBay also is going big on mobile. The company has already deployed its new service in a trial at 51 Home Depot’s, primarily in the San Francisco area, according to Anuj Nayar, a spokesman for PayPal.
The giant e-commerce payment business feels really confident about this being a game changer in its future business.

Notion Ink Adam II announced - Not many take notice
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsNotion Ink
It’s been a while since we’ve heard the name Notion Ink being thrown around but it’s resurfaced with the promise of the Adam II. No real details for the upcoming tablet have been released, other than the fact that the Indian company has partnered with Texas Instruments to run the show and that the device will ship with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
Before the original Adam was released, I was very intrigued by the tablet’s capabilities and wanted one as soon as I could get Notion Ink to take my money. Then we saw the unique custom user interface, Eden. The UI looked promising but it ended up being quite the mess. That, and other issues with updates that caused the tablet to brick itself ju...

HTC Flyer to get treated to ICS in Q1 2012?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsHTCGoogleFlyerAndroid 4.0
HTC’s 7-inch stylus-supporting Flyer has seen its price slashed to the very affordable $299, then it was just recently updated to 3.2 Honeycomb, and now it’s confirmed to get further up in the Android hierarchy to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) in Q1 2012.
The update wasn’t officially confirmed, though - it slipped in a customer service rep mention in France, so we’d take it with a grain of salt.
Good news is that the first quarter of the year has already started and, if true, we’re left to wait nine weeks until the update arrives. Have you updated your HTC Flyer to Honeycomb already? Let us know in the comments below.

Google requiring new users adopt Gmail, Google+
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google is now steering users into extra services when they register a new Google account on the sign-up page. Now, a new subscriber must provide more information then in the past to create an account, which in turn is automatically used to enroll them in Google+ and create a Gmail account. Although it's not explicitly stated, users can opt out, but the move counts on them accepting the extra features by default.
In the past, if an individual wanted to create a Google account, all they had to do was provide an e-mail address or open up a Gmail account. This would allow that user to make online purchases, upload files to Google Docs, or use Google Calendar.
Now, Google is asking those wishing ...

University of Vienna researchers quantum leap into the cloud, ensure privacy for distributed computing
Like UnlikeAfraid of the cloud? You're not alone, as rising concerns surrounding the security of distributed computing have led University of Vienna researchers to seek out quantum mechanics as a privacy fix. The team's findings, soon to be published in the journal Science, prove that an end user's data can remain encrypted throughout its journey to and from remote servers, essentially rendering the quantum computer's calculations as "blind." So, how exactly does this evasive entanglement work? Qubits (or quantum bits) containing the pertinent information are transmitted to a central facility where they're processed according to a specific set of measurements, leaving the resultant computations readabl...

Time to update your Intel executive playing cards. The chipmaker is doing some serious reshuffling high up in its ranks. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that SVP Brian Krzanich and EVP Dadi Perlmutter will be taking on the roles of chief operating officer and chief product officer, respectively. The big moves come on the heels of some positive looking financial results. The Journal suggests that the decision may be part of the company's attempt to line up a successor for current Intel CEO, Paul Otellini.

Twitter buys Summify, helps you automatically turn off the noise
Like UnlikeSummify is a beloved little news-curation platform that works out (based on your reading habits and those of your friends) what news is most relevant to you. Yesterday the Vancouver-based start-up announced that it had been snapped up by Twitter and will commence shutting down in the next week. Fortunately, the team is relocating down to the micro-blogging site's San Francisco base, ostensibly to bake the service into forthcoming variations of the site -- which might be enough to stop us complaining about losing our retweets panel. Hopefully this means that we can dial out all the noise about Lindsay Lohan without having to ask it: truly we are living in the future.

PIPA and SOPA votes pushed back in the face of overwhelming opposition
Like UnlikeIn the face of overwhelming opposition from just about every major technology company and the general public, the US Senate and House have decided to delay votes on the anti-piracy bills known as PIPA (Senate) and SOPA (House). Majority leader Harry Reid and Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith both announced that upcoming work on the acts would be delayed, "until there is wider agreement on a solution." While both have said that concerns over piracy must be addressed, it seems unlikely that they or any other politician will be rushing to revive the would-be laws after very public protests from Google and Wikipedia and the reported deluge of phone calls and emails that hammered offices a...

Anonymous goes on DDoS rampage after MegaUpload shutdown
Like UnlikeThe loosely knit online hacker collective went on the rampage yesterday afternoon after news broke that several Megaupload.com staff members had been arrested, including its founder Kim Dotcom. They are accused of online piracy and the popular file sharing service was pulled from the internet.
Within minutes after the news spread, the so-called hacktivists had assembled, and #OPMegaupload had begun in what became an evening of nonstop DDoS attacks likened to the virtual equivalent of a nuclear bomb on pretty much any company or government entity pro SOPA or PIPA.
