YouTube Just Keeps Growing, Receives 4 Billion Views Daily

Google+ may hog the headlines and television ads, but another Google property sucks in page views and advertising dollars at a much more rapid clip. No, we're not talking about Google Search (although that's probably doing just fine financially); we're talking about YouTube. The Big G's video-sharing service just keeps getting more and more popular, and at this point, the hours of video uploaded each and every minute outnumbers the amount of hours most people spend working in a week.

Sony today announced a bit of a Spring refresh for its Vaio Z laptop line, which is really more like a post-CES refresh here in the States where Spring doesn't officially kick off for about another two months. Timing and verbiage aside, Sony's tweaked Vaio Z laptops represent a minor refresh that begins with a new color option -- Carbon Fiber Silver -- and continues with an optional 4G LTE mobile broadband upgrade.
The Carbon Silver SKU joins Carbon Black, Carbon Gold, and Premium Carbon Black (matte) as color options. Inside Vaio Z laptops are upgraded Core i5 and i7 processor options and RAID 0 solid state drives (SSDs). Sony's Vaio Z line is still highlighted by Sony's Power Media Dock dr...

Posted on Jan 25, 2012 by MG3

On Friday, the Chronic Dev Team and iPhone Dev Team joined forces and released “Absinthe A5,” an untethered jailbreak solution for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. The two groups released the download figures on Monday and revealed that almost 1 million people jailbroke their devices during Absinthe’s first three days of availability. Using Cydia, the alternative App Store that comes with the exploit, the team was able to track the exact number of downloads. Specifically, the jailbreak was performed on 491,325 iPhone 4S handsets, 308,967 iPad 2 tablets and 152,940 iPad 2s that had been previously jailbroken on iOS 4.

It's that time folks: time for the quarterly running of the spreadsheets. Today Apple, one the most anticipated of all, is revealing its earnings for the past three months and let's just say things are lookin' pretty good for the Cupertino crew. The company set a new record for quarterly revenue and profit in Q1 of 2012, netting $46.33 billion in total with $13.06 billion earnings -- the latter number representing about half of the company's annual profit. That's nearly twice what Apple announced for the same (at the time record-setting) period last year -- $26.74 billion and $6 billion, respectively. In total the company shipped 15.4 million iPads, 15.4 million iPods and 5.2 million Macs th...

Tim Cook: “There Will Come A Day When The Tablet Market Is Larger Than The PC Market”

One of the big questions hanging over Apple this quarter was whether or not iPad sales would continue its rapid growth. Last quarter Amazon introduced the Kindle Fire at $200 (well below the iPAd’s entry-level $500 price) and there was concern that even Apple diehard fans might delay their purchase of a tablet until the iPad 3 comes out—rumored for later this year. But iPad sales came in well above expectations at 15.4 million units. It is now a $9.1 billion business. There have been a total of 55 million iPads sold since launch in 2010.

T-Mobile says iPhone offers 'poor' experience, points customers to 4G Android phones instead

T-Mobile says iPhone offers 'poor' experience, points customers to 4G Android phones instead

Posted on Jan 25, 2012 by MG3

An internal document allegedly obtained from T-Mobile says the iPhone offers a “poor” customer experience on T-Mobile’s network. While it’s arguable that is a true statement since current iPhone models don’t support T-Mobile’s 1700MHz and 2100MHz 3G/4G bands and can only run on a second-generation EDGE network, there are now well over a million T-Mobile customers currently using unlocked iPhones on its network. The internal document instead asks customer service representatives to suggest customers buy T-Mobile’s 4G HSPA+ Android devices instead. We certainly understand where T-Mobile is coming from; obviously it wants to be able to control its customers’ experiences on its network. Plus, ED...

Windows Phone Tango to be sailing smooth with 256MB of RAM only, and include folders

Posted on Jan 25, 2012 by MG3

If you were wondering how exactly will Microsoft go about with Windows Phone supporting entry level devices for emerging markets, which Nokia is so popular with, wonder no more.
Turns out that the upcoming Windows Phone Tango update, besides lower screen resolutions, which we've heard from the very beginning rumors about it started, would also bring in the possibility to run well on less RAM, to the tune of merely 256MB, which is what 2010 Symbian devices like the Nokia N8 are using, for example.

To launch an app store dedicated to banned Android applications – that was the idea that Koushik Dutta, a CyanogenMod contributor, threw on the table a couple of weeks ago. And did the crowd love it? You bet! The proposition has accumulated pages of positive feedback on Koush's G+ page, which is why team CyanogenMod has already rolled up its sleeves and started working on bringing the idea to life.

2011 was the year when RIM’s shares nosedived and financials reflected the company’s inability to match Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android on the consumer market, so the company starts 2012 with a change: the company’s former chief operating officer Thorsten Heins takes over as CEO and president, and brings decades of technological experience in the hope to execute right and timely the PlayBook 2.0 and introduce the first BlackBerry 10 devices this year.

AT&T switches up Sony PlayStation Vita data plan options

AT&T switches up Sony PlayStation Vita data plan options

Posted on Jan 25, 2012 by MG3

AT&T announced at CES 2012 that it would be carrying the Sony PlayStation Vita portable connected gaming device, and with that announcement, it said that customers would be able to choose between two data plans for it - a $15 per month plan that offered 250MB of data, and a $25 per month plan with 2GB of data. Now that AT&T has introduced new data plans for its smartphone and tablet devices, it has decided to change the offerings for the Vita as well. Gone is the $25 per month option, replaced by a 3GB, $30 per month plan. It appears that users will still be able to choose the smaller data package if they desire. The PlayStation Vita is due to hit AT&T's shelves on February 22 for $299.

LG’s Quad-Core 2012 Flagship Leaks: The Poorly Code-Named X3

Other than the LG Spectrum, LG didn’t have much to show off by way of phones at this year’s CES show. But that doesn’t mean that something special isn’t in the works.
In fact, Pocketnow reports that LG’s 2012 flagship will run a Tegra 3 quad-core chipset and go by the name X3, at least for now. The phone likely won’t show up on store shelves until spring or summer, but we should hear an announcement (including a retail name) come Mobile World Congress in February.
Other specs include Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which will be a must with most phones released this spring, 16GB of memory (with an SD card slot), and camera fun for everyone. By that I mean an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera an...

Microsoft Points may be on their way out, even for in-app purchases

Microsoft Points may be on their way out, even for in-app purchases

On Windows Phone 7 we never really had to suffer Microsoft Points, but of course anyone buying music using the Zune desktop client would be all to familiar with the hassle, not to mention anyone playing an Xbox console game.

Microsoft Points are however set to return with a vengeance to Windows Phone 7, in the form of in-app purchases, which have become one of the primary methods developers monetize games and apps on other platforms. This brings with it of course the added complication of not knowing exactly how much it costs to buy that special power or chain mail etc.

LG Optimus Black Gingerbread update rolling out in Europe and India

Posted on Jan 25, 2012 by MG3

You know how they say – better late than never. That seems to be exactly what LG is thinking when it finally decided to release a Gingerbread update for its Optimus Black smartphone. Not sure why it took them so long, but the good thing is that the new Android version is now available to download. Actually, we’re hearing only users in Europe and India can grab Android 2.3.4, while the rest of the world will have to wait for few more days/weeks (we’re not sure).
