New iOS Hack Lets You Natively Tweet By Talking To Siri
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsAppleiPhone 4siOS 5
There’s no shortage of novel things you can strongarm Siri into doing for you these days, but sometimes it’s the little things that get me excited.
While not as innately flashy as being able to start a car, a new (and currently nameless) tweak from developer InfectionFX does something that Siri should have been able to do from the beginning: tweet for you.

Verizon sold 15M Android phones, nearly 11M iPhones in 2011
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesVerizon Wireless
Verizon announced during its earnings call today that 15 million Android phones were activated and nearly 11 million iPhones were sold. This news comes after the largest wireless carrier in the United States activated a record of over 4 million iPhones in the fourth quarter.
Apparently these numbers weren’t too impressive as investors punished the company’s stock because costs associated with offering the iOS handset weighed heavily on Big Red’s earnings. Verizon pays a subsidy for iPhone ending up around $400, but the company makes that money back from consumers signing into a two-year contract. This is standard practice for all cell phone providers, as they give customers a “discounted” pr...

HTC calls on IBM for help breaking into the enterprise market
Like UnlikeFiled in: HTCIBM
HTC is teaming up with business stalwart IBM in an effort to bring Android devices to the enterprise market. HTC has yet to make a dent in the lucrative business market that is dominated by RIM's BlackBerry, but now it is betting on the availability of IBM's enterprise apps to help it out.
For as much trouble as HTC has had getting a footing in the business sector, Android has seen much of the same, as enterprise customers have not found it to be secure enough for their purposes just yet. In contrast, Apple has been able to make a dent in RIM's enterprise holdings with its ubiquitous iPad tablet and the level of control that it offers system administrators.

Details on Windows Phone 8 confirms NT kernel
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoft
From a Russian smartphone forum we have some more information about Windows Phone 8, and if true it confirms the rumours that the Windows CE kernel is out, and the Windows 8 kernel in.
Having Windows 8 on your phone does not mean you will be able to run random applications. All binaries still need to be signed with a Microsoft certificate, according to the post.
The information sounds relatively authentic to me, and I wish more was revealed. However to me the odds of Windows Phone 8 running a version of the Windows 8 kernel, with all its associated implications, has just increased by 10.

Sony Ericsson "Kumquat" will launch as the Sony Xperia U
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSony Ericsson
We just recently heard about the Sony Ericsson Kumquat, and mercifully it’s being reported that the midrange Android handset will ship with a different name. Of course the majority of phones ship with a name that is different from their code name, but few code names are as ungainly as “kumquat”.
The phone will apparently ship after Sony officially buries the “Ericsson” part of their branding; this is a move that was expected after Sony bought out Ericsson’s half of the joint venture. As a result the S-E Kumquat will come to market as the Sony Xperia U. The name still conjures up images of a college that specializes in mobile technology, but at least it’s consistent with the naming convention...

Sony develops new CMOS sensor tech
Like UnlikeFiled in: CamerasSony
Sony has announced that it has developed a new "next-generation" back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, which it claims "embodies the continuous evolution of the camera."
The new sensor layers the pixel section containing formations of back-illuminated structure pixels onto chips containing the circuit section for signal processing.
This is in place of supporting substrates for conventional back-illuminated CMOS image sensors.
This means the usual supporting structure is omitted and the two sections can be produced separately.
As a result Sony claims that the structure can achieve further enhancement in image quality, superior functionalities and a more compact size. Faster speeds coupled with ...

Android 4.0 runs on an AMD tablet
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsAMDGoogleAndroid 4.0
We just remembered there was one last curiosity we saw at AMD's suite at CES 2012: this AMD Fusion tablet, running Android 4.0. Before you get too excited, AMD was quick to point out that this MSI WindPad 110W didn't get Ice Cream Sandwich through any effort of its own. What you're looking at is actually the work of the Android-x86 project, which very recently released a test Android 4.0 ISO for AMD Brazos-based tablets like the one above.

Dutch Court Denies Apple's Second Shot at a Galaxy Tab 10.1 Ban
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungApple
We've all been told, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again," but repeated attempts at the same result don't guarantee success. Apple, for example, tried to convince Dutch authorities to issue a preliminary injunction against Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 device on the alleged basis that it copies the look and feel of it's iPad, a notion that was rejected, appealed, and rejected again.
Foss Patents breaks down the ruling (available online in Dutch), explaining that the rationale in this latest decision is similar to the one that guided Judge Lucy Koh of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, who also denied Apple's request for a preliminary injunction (...

Asus Intros 12.5-inch B23E Ultraportable Laptop for Enterprise Users
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksASUSB23E
Asus is already an ultrabook veteran, having been the first company to unveil an ultrabook. But at the recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where we saw dozens of new ultrabook models from almost all other major vendors, Asus seemed content with merely announcing two new color options for its existing Zenbook lineup of ultrabooks. That said, the company didn’t announce any new notebook models either. Now that CES is well behind us,though, the company seems to have found the time to launch a new enterprise laptop, the B23E.
The B23E is essentially a 12.5-inch ultraportable targeted at enterprise users. Asus claims that all its B series enterprise notebooks are way bett...

Sales of Intel's Atom processor have hit an all-time low in Q4 2011. The chip giant pulled in $167 million of Atom sales, a far cry from the $438 million peak achieved two years ago as X-bit Labs reports.
While Intel Corp. is facing great demand towards its advanced Core i-series "Sandy Bridge" microprocessors, the firm of witnessing rapidly dropping demand towards its low-cost/low-power Atom chip line. Intel CEO Says That 4G Will Be Integrated into SoCs
Like UnlikeFiled in: Intel
Intel CEO Paul Otellini reportedly said during the most recent conference call with financial analysts that wireless wide area network (WWAN) functionality will be integrated into its SoCs developed from smartphones and tablets. This would seemingly help Intel distinguish its SoC solution from ARM's non-x86 design which is currently used in chips offered by Nvidia, Qualcomm and others.
