FileSonic ceases file sharing after Megaupload bust
Like UnlikeA number of file-sharing sites have decided to shut up shop after the arrest of the owners of Megaupload and the site's subsequent shutdown.
FileSonic is perhaps the most well-known file-sharing site to down tools, announcing that it has now turned into a personal digital locker service rather than a public one.
A statement on the website reads: "All sharing functionality on FileSonic is now disabled. Our services can only be used to upload and retrieve files that you have uploaded personally."
Another site to drastically change its business model in light of the Megaupload fiasco is Uploaded.to which has made itself unavailable to users residing in the US.

Kodak film division still profitable
Like UnlikeFiled in: KODAK
Kodak, which announced last week that it was filing for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection in the United States, has confirmed that its film division will survive as long as it remains profitable.
Speaking to the British Journal of Photography, a spokesperson for the business said "We have taken steps to sustain the business as it has declined, and we know that there are hundreds of passionate fans of film for the artistic and quality reasons they cite."

Anonymous invites public to hit Facebook in massive DDoS attack [UPDATE: Denied]
Like UnlikeIn a brand new video which comes along with a message bringing tidings of an oncoming storm in the face of Facebook, Anonymous has dropped their newest threat. Later in this post I’ll speak for a moment on whether or not this is actually the same Anonymous we’ve been talking about for the past few months, but know this: it doesn’t matter, as the attack that they speak of will be run not by the hackers themselves, but by the public. In this way it is the democratic takedown that Anonymous speaks of each time they represent the greater whole – a perfect crushing of Facebook by the masses that would otherwise make Facebook thrive.

Gamers Redesign a Protein That Stumped Scientists for Years
Like UnlikeFolding: it's detestable and boring, as any Gap employee can tell you. But it's also a totally fun thing you can do in a video game! And today it's particularly exciting because players of the online game Foldit have redesigned a protein, and their work is published in the science journal Nature Biotechnology.
It seems nobler than shooting people in the face, somehow. Granted, Foldit attracts a unique kind of gamer who enjoys obsessing over biological protein folding patterns. Proteins get their function from the way they are folded into coils like in the image above. When the amino acids in a protein interact, they create that coiled, three-dimensional structure. Scientists can manipulate t...

Texas Instruments 2011 Q4 earnings: $3.42 billion in revenue, $298 million in profit
Like UnlikeIt's that special time of year after CES, when many tech companies regale us with their latest earnings reports. Texas Instruments is the most recent firm to divulge its financials, and while the company isn't breaking any records, it did beat Wall Street's expectations. TI pulled in $3.42 billion in revenue, a three percent dip from the previous year, and profit dropped to $298 million from the $942 million it made in Q4 2010. While the company's spinning the numbers as a positive, stating that orders for its chips are up and its revenue beat estimates, the fact that TI's closing two manufacturing plants over the next year and a half doesn't paint such a rosy picture. Of course, if the futu...

Google, MIT bestow App Inventor to the unwashed masses
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google must be feeling generous: it donated Sky Map to undeserving armchair astronomers and it's letting the great unwashed get at its App Inventor development platform. The software toolset was cooked up in partnership with MIT: a web-based interface that lets anyone build Android apps without getting elbows-deep in code. Those Massachusetts king-geeks won't be accepting submissions just yet, however: it's still got to work out how it's going to deploy the public server and foster a "robust and active open-source project" under its new name: the moderately unimaginative MIT App Inventor.

Nokia Lumia 710, the mid-range smartphone from Nokia just got a significant price cut in India few days before. Sony ST25i 'Kumquat' Android smartphone possibly leaked
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSony Ericsson
Next month we’re sure to hear about the latest smartphones from several of the world’s largest phone makers during Mobile World Congress, however that hasn’t stopped a number of leaks from occurring ahead of the show. The latest is a possible image of what is presumed to be Sony’s upcoming ST25i “Kumquat” Android smartphone. Specs are still slim at this point and we’re a bit suspicious since it still features the “Sony Ericsson” branding, but this could easily be an early prototype since even the smartphones on display at CES featured the Sony Ericsson name. Sony recently announced it was purchasing Ericsson’s stake in the Sony Ericsson joint venture and its newest phones are now branded “So...

Is Huawei planning to debut its "Diamond Series" smartphones at MWC?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Huawei
Lately, Huawei has been making some headway in capturing the interest of people – especially with CES announced devices like the Huawei P1 and P1 S. And considering that they’ve recently launched the Huawei Honor in China with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on board from the get-go, they’re seemingly moving on up in presenting the wireless community with impressive devices.
No doubt we’ll continue the Chinese company producing plenty of lower end devices, like they’ve been doing for some time now, but they’re aiming on ramping things up in the upper end of the spectrum. Apparently, reports indicate that Huawei is planning to introduce a whole new line of smartphones that are going to be a ...

Android 4.0.3 gets "Experiments" options in Gmail
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 4.0
It looks like users that have been lucky enough to get the bump to Android 4.0.3 (which, by the way, does not include the new Galaxy Nexus just yet) are also finding a couple of new options in Gmail. The new options are under the heading of "Experiments" in the settings menu.
There are only two options available, but they both sound pretty cool. They actually seem to be features that Google probably would have wanted to have ready for the launch of Ice Cream Sandwich, but somehow missed the deadline. The first option will allow Gmail to index entire messages to improve local search. The other will allow users to drag and drop contact chips between the To, CC, and BCC address fields.

Apple reportedly looking to adopt 802.11ac 5G Gigabit Wi-Fi this year
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple may be looking to incorporate support for 802.11ac Wi-Fi specification into the company’s products this year, according to a report from AppleInsider. The new standard offers three times the speed of the 802.11n standard, capable of achieving speeds of over 1 Gigabit per second. The Cupertino-based company is expected to “rapidly deploy support” of the new standard into AirPort base stations, Time Capsules, the Apple TV, notebooks and possibly mobile devices, according to the report. Even though the official standard has yet to be finalized, multiple suppliers have already announced chipsets supporting it — one of those is key Apple component maker Broadcom, which announced chips suppo...

Microsoft to speed up Windows Phone feature iteration
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
It seems that Microsoft's plan so far with Windows Phone has been to build the base and optimize the software before allowing hardware manufacturers to add new features, but it looks like Microsoft might be ready to start pushing the Windows Phone ecosystem a bit faster.
In an interview with Techradar, Microsoft's director of Mobile Communication Business Aaron Woodman said that Microsoft knew there was a lot of catch-up to be done to compete with the likes of iOS and Android, but that the company thinks that it has achieved that basic parity, and now will begin looking at more "innovative pieces". Much of that base work was put towards hardware optimization, which according to Woodman means...

HTC Primo specs leaked; includes Android 4.0 and Beats Audio
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleAndroid 4.0One V
The new fad in Android models seems to be smaller form factors with mid-to high end specs. Just the other day, we told you about the Sony Ericsson Kumquat, which fits into this mold. Now, thanks to a tipster for Stuff, we see low to mid range specs allegedly heading for the HTC Primo. With a 3.7 inch Super AMOLED display strengthened by Gorilla Glass and a dual-core 1GHz Qualcomm processor under the hood, the HTC Primo would have the muscles to get the job done. On board is 512MB of RAM and a 5MP camera on back that captures 720p video. The dual-shutter on the camera allows you to snap photos while taking video at the same time and the f/2.0 aperture should help you take decent pictures in l...
