Steve Jobs' Android rage can be used in patent legal row
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleGoogleAndroid
A judge has ruled that explosive comments made by the late Steve Jobs, can be used against Apple in a patent battle with Motorola.
Apple co-founder and former CEO Jobs made the angry comments to biographer Walter Isaacson, claiming Google had 'ripped off' the iPhone with its Android operating system.
In the passage, which proved to be the most newsworthy part of the book, Jobs said: "I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple's $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong.

The Ice Cream Sandwich update LG promised in June is here, at least for one of its phones. We've gotten confirmation that the Optimus LTE software upgrade, which adds Android 4.0 as well as the Optimus UI 3.0, is now live for phones in Korea. LG PR rep Ken Hong has posted a picture of his Optimus LTE running Android 4.0.4, and we're keeping our eye out for similar updates elsewhere. Besides the Optimus LTE, LG has previously said that the Vu and Optimus LTE Tag will be getting Ice Cream Sandwich in June.

Nvidia's new graphics drivers are certified for Windows 8
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftnVIDIAWindows 8
If you had any reason to suspect that Nvidia wouldn't have fully-functional graphics drivers in time for Windows 8, you can probably dismiss them now: the company's new R302 drivers have been WHQL-certified by Microsoft specifically for the new operating system. That's the word from Nvidia's official blog, which explains that the R302 drivers are specifically for Windows 8, as earlier versions of the operating system will stick with R300 drivers. The new branch includes support for all the new WDDM 1.2 features (including things like stereoscopic 3D optimizations and flicker-free screen rotation), and Nvidia says it will support Nvidia 3D Vision for 3D games right away. Sounds like just the ...

Judge approves authors' class action suit against Google's digital library
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google's fight to digitize the world's books in the largest online library ever created will face more hurdles.
A judge ruled that three authors and the Author's Guild will stand at the forefront of a class action suit.
Authors Betty Miles, Joseph Goulden and Jim Bouton, with the support (and financial resources) of the Author's Guild, will represent the class of all authors and publishers with a stake in any book that's been digitized by Google as part of the search giant's Google Book Search initiative.

Mobile NFC payments hitting 11,500 European post offices
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Here in the US, when there’s a story about the Postal Service it’s pretty much always negative these days. But in Europe, it’s a very different situation. The Post Office service across the pond has decided to roll out near field communication (NFC) technology to around 11,500 branches, making it easier than ever for customers to pay for their shipping services.

RIM finally gets some good news, court rules it can keep using BBM name
Like UnlikeFiled in: RIM BlackBerry
Between delays, executive defections and falling market share the news lately hasn't been rosy for RIM, but today it got at least one reprieve as a Federal Court in Canada ruled its use of the acronym BBM did not infringe another company's trademark. The lawsuit was filed last December by BBM Canada, a broadcast industry group that owns a trademark on the name but because they are in different types of businesses the court decided RIMs usage was acceptable. According to The Globe and Mail BBM Canada CEO Jim MacLeod has not decided whether or not to appeal the ruling, but we're sure the folks from Waterloo will take a win for now. It already had to switch the name of its new OS from BBX to Bl...

Google lobs antitrust complaint against Microsoft, Nokia in EU, claims they're playing patent footsie (updated)
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftNOKIAGoogle
The gloves just came off at Google: the company has just filed an antitrust complaint with the European Commission against Microsoft and Nokia. Its gripe accuses the two Windows Phone partners of playing dirty pool through handing 1,200 wireless-related patents to Mosaid, a Canadian firm which spends most of its time suing the industry over WiFi rather than making products. Microsoft and Nokia are allegedly hiking the prices of devices by "creating patent trolls" that bypass deals preventing them from suing directly, possibly steering a few companies towards picking Windows Phone instead of Android.

Taller new iPhone screen allegedly shown in leaked video
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesApple
Another piece of information about the new iPhone has leaked, apparently backing up rumors that it will be taller than the iPhone 4S. In a short video, Japanese site Macotakara shows off a 10.33-cm (4.07-inch) screen and a front panel that's quite a bit longer than the current-gen phone it's placed against. It's otherwise similar in shape, with the same width but a slightly lower Home button. The panel looks much like the one 9to5 Mac said it obtained earlier, including a FaceTime camera that's been moved above the earpiece. Nothing in the video is too surprising, but since there's no backplate we can't check it against some of the details in other leaks, and individual phone parts can't rea...

iPhone 5 hardware tipped to include Samsung processor
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesCPUSamsungApple
It appears today that Samsung is indeed inside the next iPhone if a leaked Beta version of iOS 6 is to be believed. This version of Apple’s mobile operating system is being run by the folks at 9to5mac who also note that they’ve got the software running on an iPhone today, it showing off Darwin Kernel Version 13.0.0 and signs of an ARM S5L8950X processor from Samsung. This basic confirmation that Samsung is in the next Apple mobile device takes rumors that Apple was moving away from Samsung parts in their devices and puts the processor portion, at least, to rest as a falsehood.

Panasonic to deliver a record-breaking 12,000 TVs to London Olympics
Like UnlikeFiled in: TVsPanasonic
Panasonic has just dished some of the statistics from its Olympics sponsorship this year, the highlight of which is a record-breaking number of TVs provided — over 12,000 — that will span a total display area of 1,730 square meters. That comfortably beats the Beijing Olympics of four years ago, when the relevant numbers were 10,000 TVs and 1,312 square meters, and includes 45 large-screen LED TVs, 47 103-inch plasmas, and two pairs of 152-inch and 145-inch plasma TVs. In Panasonic's words, "anything that has to do with the acquisition or transmission of image" during the London 2012 Olympics will be handled by the company. A small caveat to that statement is that the BBC will be recording an...

Foxconn labor conditions barely improved, says SACOM
Like UnlikeFiled in: Foxconn
Little has changed at Foxconn since it and Apple agreed to make changes in the wake of a Fair Labor Association report, says Student & Scholars Against Corporate Misbehaviour. The activist group recently visited several Foxconn factories and interviewed 170 workers, and claims that rights violations "remain the norm," involving high production targets, inhumane treatment, and evidence of broad salary cuts. "The frontline management continue to impose humiliating disciplinary measures on workers," a SACOM report reads.

Google+ Events leaks out through Google Calendar, will let your knitting circle schedule a Hangout
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google has been on another one of its Google+ feature addition streaks lately, and it's so eager to please that it's spoiling other features early. More than a few people visiting Google Calendar have been given an introduction to "Events in Google+" in recent hours despite the extra component (and its splash page) being absent. From what we know, Events will provide the obvious Facebook-like option to create and track events among Google+ circles, but it will also let organizers slot in a Hangout video chat in advance as well as pool together photos and videos associated with an event. The Google+ app for Android has even been showing an empty button that's speculated to be a dedicated Even...
