New Jersey shoppers to pay tax on Amazon purchases starting next July
Like UnlikeFiled in: Amazon
Amazon will get a yearlong break from having to collect sales tax on its New Jersey orders. A new deal announced yesterday (May 30th) will see the company build two new distribution centers in the state, together worth about $130 million. In the US, an online retailer is required to collect sales tax in states where it has a physical presence, but this deal will let Amazon off the hook until July, 2013. New Jersey will be joining the likes of tax-collecting states Kansas, Kentucky, New York, North Dakota, Washington, and beginning in July of this year, Texas.

Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksIntel
Last month, Intel launched its third-generation processors in the Core family, known as Ivy Bridge. Those chips that launched last month were high-powered versions, not the power sipping, miserly chips that would make their way into notebooks and ultrabooks looking for performance and long battery life. Today, Intel has officially launched its laptop focused Ivy Bridge processors.

MSI introduced a new cost-effective variant of its GeForce GTX 550 Ti graphics card (model: N550GTX-Ti-MD1GD5-V2), which will allow the company to compete in price-points deep within US $150. The card features a similar cooling solution to that of NVIDIA reference design, backed up by a new PCB design. The GPU sticks to NVIDIA-reference clock speeds of 900 MHz (core), 1800 MHz (CUDA cores), and 3.80 GHz (GDDR5 memory effective). The GPU packs 192 CUDA cores, and a 192-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, holding 1 GB of memory. The new PCB layout also allowed MSI to improve the display output loadout, which includes one each of dual-link DVI, D-Sub, and HDMI (standard-size). The N550GTX-Ti-MD1GD...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesTabletsSamsungApple
Technicolor, the iconic French company that invented the process that enables color movies, is looking for large patent payoffs from major mobile vendors, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday. The company holds more than 40,000 video, audio and optics patents, and reportedly employs a team of 220 people who dissect every new smartphone and tablet from vendors such as Apple, Samsung and HTC. The team is responsible for locating patent infringements within each device. “We usually send manufacturers a big file, with photos of the guts of their products, pointing to where they’ve been using our technology without paying for it,” said Beatrix de Russe, a lawyer and executive vice president of intellect...

Chip maker NVIDIA is perhaps best known for its stand-alone graphics cards, which they sell to professional graphic artists and hard-core gamers alike. These and other PC components, including lower-cost laptop and desktop GPUs, and motherboard chipsets have long been the mainstay of NVIDIA’s revenues. Now an analysis by Forbes shows this changing quickly, and demonstrates the importance of the mobile sector to the silicon fabricators of the world.

We reported two days ago that Verizon had finally made the Android 4.0.4 update official on its website, and now, perhaps 5 months after many people were expecting and update, the OTA is getting pushed out to actual phones owned by real flesh and blood people. Of course owners of the GSM version are already rocking 4.0.4, even the Sprint version (which is actually identical save for different branding and the presence of Google Wallet) have enjoyed the update for a month.

Amazon set to purchase mobile ad company, get in the game
Like UnlikeFiled in: Amazon
A couple of weeks after speculation arose that Amazon would sell ad space on the screensaver for the Amazon Kindle Fire's welcome screen for $600,000, the rumor has broadened into a plan for Amazon to create a mobile ad network. To help it get started, Amazon might be looking to purchase Jumptap, a company already in the mobile advertising business. According to sources for AdAge, the online retailer has also looked at purchasing other firms in the same line of business. Additionally, Amazon hired Jamie Wells away from Microsoft where he was in charge of global product marketing for mobile display and apps. His LinkedIn page says he is currently hiring candidates for mobile ad sales and mark...

Samsung posts Galaxy S III source code, modders start their engines
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S III
That was fast: just a few days after the Galaxy S III reached buyers' eager hands, Samsung has posted the phone's source code. Its dutiful clinging to Google's Android guidelines opens the floodgates to custom ROMs as well as a better sense of what makes Samsung's Android 4.0 variant tick. As you'd anticipate, the code is only valid for the international GT-i9300 version. North American models, for the time being, are left out. Still, the source is useful for most anyone that wants to tinker with what should be the most ubiquitous Google-powered phone of the year, so get to downloading if that sounds like you.
