Android malware scanner spoofed by security researchers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Android security researchers Jon Oberheide and Charlie Miller have devised ways to circumvent the cloud-based security filter that Google uses to attempt to keep the market devoid of malicious Android apps. By feeding the scanner a maliciously crafted file and shell commands to reveal files and list system attributes, the research team were able to procure information about how the malware scanner works.
"So this is just one technique to fingerprint the Bouncer environment, allowing a malicious app to appear benign when run within Bouncer, and yet still perform malicious activities when run on a real user's device," Oberheide said in a demonstration video (seen below). Oberheide and Miller a...

CyanogenMod's new mascot, Cid, gets his own start-up animation
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Equal parts creepy and adorable, CyanogenMod's new character has been gifted his first big appearance, in his own animation for the Android modder platform of choice. Cid (that's short for CyanogenMod ID) will replace the slightly overfamiliar skateboarding Android icon when you turn on your now tinkered-with gadget. Gaze at his sweetly-sinister glow right after the break.

Google Fiber GFHD100 'IP set-top box' breezes through the FCC, doesn't say where it's headed
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
The future of Google as a hardware manufacturer (beyond its purchase of Motorola) continues to be shrouded in rumor and mystery, but the GFHD100 box that just popped up in the FCC's database is very much a fact. As seen in the pictures, it's sporting a Google Fiber label which suggests it's a part of rolling out video services to the Kansas Cities, and also reveals it's being built for Google by Humax. The MAC address shown in the picture is registered to Google directly, while the test report calls it an IP-set top box, equipped with WiFi, IR, USB, Ethernet, HDMI input and output and an Ethernet / coax (we assume MoCA?) bridge, which sounds similar to the boxes favored by Verizon's FiOS. Un...

Foursquare is planning to give its mobile apps a big makeover very soon
Like UnlikeIt’s really funny how some things strive in a cold and bleak world. Sometimes, things are given short lives by the industry, but then again, there are those surprises that somehow make us scratch our heads and wonder. Well folks, we can honestly say that Foursquare is seemingly one of those things that continue to prove everyone wrong, as they’re beating alive against the horde of stiff competition.
Previously, some mentioned seeing its demise when Facebook decided to aggressively pursue its own location check-in service, but even through that, Foursquare has managed to stay put and grow. Well folks, now that it’s an established powerhouse, they’re aiming to reinvent themselves again after t...

Samsung Galaxy Nexus sale: Just $0.01 from Amazon
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGALAXY Nexus
With Samsung’s Galaxy S III rolling out across at least five carriers in the United States beginning this month and HTC’s One X and One S already available, the world’s most popular Android 4.0 phone is already past its prime. The phone first hit the market in the U.S. this past December as a Verizon Wireless exclusive, and while Android 4.0 adoption is still just beginning to take off, technology has been a bit quicker to shift. Newly announced smartphones tout quad-core chipsets and vastly improved battery performance, but they also carry hefty price tags. For those in search of an Ice Cream Sandwich phone without having to fork over $200 or more, Amazon is now offering Samsung’s latest pu...

Qualcomm urges FCC not to require interoperability on 700MHz phones, citing new chip
Like UnlikeAccording to FCC filings, Qualcomm is developing a chip that could resolve interoperability problems on the 700MHz spectrum band, but the issue isn't fixed yet. The 700MHz block is currently used by AT&T, Verizon, and smaller US carriers, but they operate on different blocks, and regional carriers have complained about not being able to get hardware that operates on their bands or being unable to let their phones roam on larger networks. A new chip apparently being sped through development by Qualcomm, however, could solve these problems. In the filing, Qualcomm said its chip could be configured by manufacturers to work on a carrier's normal band but roam on a different one. At the same time...

Google patents location-based mobile alerts that know where you're going to
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
To date, the term smartphone's mostly been a misnomer for larger screen, albeit still dumb, handsets imbued with rich web browsing experiences. With the exception of the Galaxy S III's SmartStay feature and the Droid RAZR, not many other high-end devices can lay claim to "intelligent," user-adaptive behavior. Which is why our eyes are trained on this recently awarded Google patent that stands poised to turn future Android (we presume) devices into location-aware assistants. Originally submitted back in September of 2011, the USPTO filings describe a software-based profile alarm that seems eerily reminiscent of Motorola's own Smart Actions -- a fitting appropriation given the just wrapped acq...

RIM patent lawsuit: MTEL sues over pager tech
Like UnlikeFiled in: RIM BlackBerry
Can a patent suit be tossed out because it’s wantonly cruel? That’s a question a judge will soon have to deal with because Research In Motion has just been slapped with a lawsuit that alleges the company has been infringing upon cutting-edge technology patents related to… two-way pagers. The suit, which is being filed by a company called Mobile Telecommunications Technologies LLC (MTEL) based in Lewisville, Texas, is taking RIM to task for allegedly infringing patents that were formerly owned by SkyTel Communications.

'Minecraft' creator claims Xbox 360 version is the best-selling Live Arcade game ever, with over two million sold
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesMicrosoftXBOX 360
It didn't take long to see that Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition would be a huge hit. The game set a new single-day sales record on the Xbox Live Arcade last month, and now Minecraft creator Markus Persson (perhaps better known as Notch) has tweeted that the Xbox 360 version his game is the best-selling Xbox Live Arcade game ever, less than a month after launch. Apparently, the game has already sold over two million copies, according to a follow-up tweet by Daniel Kaplan, who serves as business developer for Minecraft publisher Mojang. Hitting the two million milestone isn't a huge shock — after all, the game managed to sell a cool million in less than one week. If Persson's claim is to be believ...

In our recent overclocking review of the Core i7-3770K, we showed what Ivy Bridge can do on air and its limitations compared to previous Sandy Bridge CPUs. Gigabyte, with the help of overclocker HiCookie, set out to show what the Core i7-3770K can do on liquid nitrogen cooling and Gigabyte motherboards. HiCookie was able to surpass the 7.0 GHz milestone using a Core i7 3770K processor, while pushing the Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H motherboard to a fully validated 7.032 GHz using liquid nitrogen cooling. This is regarded as the current highest Ivy Bridge CPU frequency and a world record according to global overclocking website HWBot.org.

Ubuntu coming to smartphones as early as next year
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsLinuxUbuntu
The fine folks over at Canonical have been hard at work on a mobile version of the popular Ubuntu Linux distro, and have announced that the final build will be making its way to smartphones later this year or early next year. Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth would not provide a specific date to PC World, instead indicating that announcements would likely be coming later this year.
Ubuntu for smartphones won’t follow the typical Ubuntu distribution channels, meaning it won’t be made readily available to anyone who so chooses to download it. Instead, the final build of Ubuntu will be made available to manufacturers who can then choose to offer the Ubuntu experience on their smartphones to r...
