CyanogenMod gets a new boot animation for CM9

CyanogenMod gets a new boot animation for CM9

Posted on Jun 05, 2012 by MG1

CyanogenMod is far and away the most popular custom ROM for Android handsets – as of May they had hit 2 million unique installs – so when they decided to update their boot animation for CyanogenMod 9, we figured at least one or two of you would want to check it out.
The video (embedded below) replaces an earlier version developed for CM9 that stared the iconic Andy the Android; the new animation stars Cid, a new mascot the CM team introduced back in April. At the time Cid lacked a name – it was being referred to as rAndy at the time, a name we weren’t terribly fond of. While Cid may conjure up images of a spike-haired kid torturing toys, it at least avoids capitalization-based word play.

Google continues to load up on patents, purchases Magnolia Broadband's portfolio

Google continues to load up on patents, purchases Magnolia Broadband's portfolio

Posted on Jun 05, 2012 by MG1

When Google acquired Android years ago, they clearly did not anticipate the patent war that would result from their successful move to being a mobile platform provider. In retrospect it seems obvious that this would happen, as Google’s relative corporate youth meant it lacked a strong patent portfolio it could leverage to negotiate legal cease-fires. The result has been a yearlong patent buying spree of epic proportions.
Their most recent acquisition is from Magnolia Broadband, which apparently sold its entire patent portfolio to El Goog for a wad o' cash of undisclosed dimensions. The deal was made public by Mooreland Partners, the financial firm that advised Magnolia on the deal. Their bri...

Emergency Windows Update released to thwart spoofed Microsoft certificate in Flame malware

Microsoft released an emergency Windows Update over the weekend to address a certificate spoof issue. The company said on Sunday that its update for all supported versions of Windows is related to the recently discovered Flame malware, where the software giant says it discovered this particular malware was using a spoofed Microsoft certificate. "We have discovered through our analysis that some components of the malware [Flame] have been signed by certificates that allow software to appear as if it was produced by Microsoft," revealed Microsoft's Mike Reavey.

Firefox 13 is available for download a day early, features redesigned home screen and new tab designs

Posted on Jun 05, 2012 by MG1

Despite the fact that Firefox 13 isn't scheduled for full release until tomorrow, the final version appears to have leaked out for Windows, Mac, and Linux users. As we saw when the beta for version 13 was released back in April, there aren't a ton of user-facing changes here. The biggest change is probably that Firefox no longer automatically restores all tabs when starting up — a feature that some might find useful, but some could also find quite frustrating. Fortunately, it's still easy enough to pull up all tabs from your previous session in the history menu.

Android 4.0 ICS now on 7.1 percent of active devices

Android 4.0 ICS now on 7.1 percent of active devices

Posted on Jun 04, 2012 by MG1

Google's Android Developer Hub released updated figures for the platform's distribution this week, and while Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is still gaining share, it is doing so at a rather slow pace. Last month, the latest version of Android was on 4.9 percent of active devices, but now it has climbed up to a 7.1 percent share.
New devices that come with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, such as HTC's One series, have certainly helped get the updated software into more hands. That trend will continue as Samsung's new Galaxy S III hits more markets and becomes more widely available.

Samsung Galaxy S III coming to AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular this month

Samsung Galaxy S III coming to AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular this month

Posted on Jun 04, 2012 by MG1

Official is as official does... right? In a bid to one-up the Galaxy S II's launch here in the States, Samsung has just announced that five carriers will soon have their own customized versions of the Galaxy S III. And by "soon," we mean "beginning in June." AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular are all in line to take part, with exact pricing and availability to be announced by each of the five carriers in the coming weeks. We are, however, told to expect on-contract prices as low as $199, and it sounds as if all five variants will keep the same 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display.

Google Drive is going to get a whole a lot better with offline support, according to Google’s own Senior Vice President of Chrome & Apps Sundar Pichai. The exec dropped this news nugget during the All Things Digital D10 conference. He also touted the progress Chrome was making when it came to landing on everyone’s computer, as it’s now on a third of the world’s desktop browser.
Sundar mentioned many things about Chrome, like how the search giant is considering an ad-supported Google Chromebook. Moreover, Walt Mossberg at D10 asked Sundar why Chrome OS hasn’t “taken off,” with Sundar saying the following: “It takes time. With Android, we had a very long incubation period. Last year, our goal ...

Twitter Usage Doubles in a Year

Twitter Usage Doubles in a Year

Posted on Jun 04, 2012 by MG1

Have you been tweeting more lately? Because a new report from the Pew Internet and American Life Project indicates that there has been a huge uptick in usage of the popular micro-blogging site.
As of Feb. 2012, some 15 percent of online adults use Twitter, with 8 percent using it on a typical day, according to the report. Overall Twitter adoption has remained relatively steady over the past year, but the proportion of online adults who use Twitter on the average day has doubled since last year and quadrupled since 2010. Two years ago, just 2 percent of online adults used the social media site on a given day.

Bing now more social in the US, hopes you 'like' it and tweet about it

There's no doubt the Redmond team is spending a hefty amount of time enhancing its search engine at any chance it gets. Adding to the Linked tweaks we'd previously seen, Microsoft's now making Bing more social -- at least in the US of A. The most recent changes bring a Metro-driven interface to the homepage, which boasts that Microsoft "three column design" we laid eyes on earlier this month. Naturally, the revamp will open the doors to improved search results, but this, of course, will depend heavily on if you're up to linking your Facebook, Twitter or other social network accounts with Bing. That said, something tells us you're definitely up to it.

Google lashes out at Microsoft, Nokia over alleged patent trolling

Google lashes out at Microsoft, Nokia over alleged patent trolling

Posted on Jun 04, 2012 by MG1

Google filed a regulatory complaint with the European Commission accusing Microsoft and Nokia of using their arsenal of mobile patents to raise costs to consumers.
Google alleges that Microsoft and Nokia colluded to "patent troll" the industry by hiring a third company, Canadian patent holdings firm MOSAID, to rigorously enforce patents across the mobile industry.
Google also shared their filing with the U.S. Justice Department and the FTC.
In September last year, Nokia reportedly sold 2,000 wireless patents to MOSAID, a company that makes billions collecting royalties from such patents.
MOSAID takes a third of the royalties and gives the rest to the patents' original holders, in this case M...

Facebook to experiment with access for under-13s

Facebook to experiment with access for under-13s

Posted on Jun 04, 2012 by MG1

Facebook is exploring options to connect kids to its social network, while ensuring it obeys federal laws. According to the Wall Street Journal, the social network is pushing for a more formalized structure for under-13s in an effort to curb users registering under a false age. Consumer Reports currently pegs the number of under-age users at around 7.5 million. Despite other privacy concerns, Facebook is reportedly looking to add buffers and parental controls to any kid-friendly version that might result from its current experiments. It could also tie parents' accounts to their little tykes' pages, allowing game purchases to be made through their bank details. Well, that new HQ isn't going t...
