Apple Taps European Exec as New Retail Head
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Aside from the iPhone, Apple's most startling success in recent years has been its retail power driven by the now iconic Apple Stores around the world. Today Apple placed the very delicate future of that part of its business in the hands of a relative newcomer, John Browett.
As the most valuable company on the planet, in terms of market capitalization, any major shift in strategy from Apple garners attention, but this latest move will likely raise some eyebrows due to Browett's background. Most notably, Browett is not a Silicon Valley insider, a telling fact given that he is Tim Cook's first external executive hire since becoming the CEO of Apple last year.

Google Beefs Up U.K. Maps in Time for London Olympics
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google said Monday that it has significantly improved its Maps capability for the United Kingdom, adding 170,000 train journeys and over 2,500 stations across Great Britain.
Maps also has signed a partnership with TheTrainline, so that users could actually book tickets for train journeys.
Google Maps was originally designed with streets and roads in mind, meaning that the infrastructure was already in place to calculate driving directions. But the United Kingdom is heavily dependent upon public transportation, with train journeys often far more direct than driving from city to city by car. To date, using Maps to calculate a route only took advantage of public transportation in Greater London...

Samsung Galaxy Nexus set for CPU reboot
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGALAXY Nexus
Samsung and Google could re-launch the Galaxy Nexus with a beefed up 1.5GHz processor and GPU from Texas Instruments if early benchmark tests are to be believed.
The news was triggered after a new benchmark score was spotted on the Nenamark site, which displayed a Galaxy Nexus with a PowerVR SGX544 graphics processor.
This GPU from Texas Instruments comes with a 1.8GHz processor, but could be underclocked to 1.5GHz for the Nexus, as the processor in the original Nexus was underclocked from 1.5GHz to 1.2GHz.
Please press refresh
The result found on the benchmarking site could well be a fake; however Samsung have a track record of re-releasing handsets which slightly different specs. Just take...

Google clarifies that its new privacy policy won't change users' privacy settings
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Despite Google's best efforts to introduce a simpler universal privacy policy across its numerous products, it seems that its customers aren't finding the new document entirely transparent, with some left confused and concerned by the changes being made. In a post on the Google Public Policy Blog, Google's director of Public Policy Pablo Chavez explains that although the privacy policy might be changing, users' privacy controls — and the permissions they give their content — will remain unchanged.
Chavez is quick to assuage a number of potential fears in the post. He assures users that their private information will remain private, that many tasks will still be available without a Google acc...

FCC revamps Lifeline phone service, cuts the fat from carriers' bottomlines
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
With a site redesign freshly under its belt, the FCC's setting its recently honed eye for modernization on other, more pertinent areas of its jurisdiction -- like Lifeline. The universal program, a means of guaranteeing affordable phone service to low-income families, hadn't exactly kept pace with changes in the telecom industry, overlooking consumers' preference for wireless and the growing need for pervasive broadband access. That's all set to change with new measures adopted by the Commission today designed to curb carrier abuse of the antiquated system and automate the enrollment process by eliminating unnecessary duplicate accounts and subsidies. A pilot program to offer and potentially...

Image of BlackBerry 10 leaked
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryZ10
Avid BlackBerry fans out there have probably been keeping their eyes on rumors surrounding the potential upcoming London device and BlackBerry 10. We’ve previously reported that this release is expected to occur sometime in September 2012.
CrackBerry has gotten their hands on a presentation slide that references ‘London’ with a list of features and most interestingly, a photo of a device running BlackBerry 10. The most notable aspect of this picture is that the phone depicted is very different looking than the previously leaked photo of the London.
The photo of the first prototype had angled edges and silver accents reminiscent of the BlackBerry Porsche Design P’9981, whereas this device loo...

Samsung faces EU antitrust investigation over mobile patents
Like UnlikeFiled in: Samsung
Samsung's European legal woes don't look to be abating anytime soon, as the EU today formally launched an investigation into the Korean manufacturers' competitive practices. At issue are, not surprisingly, a collection of patents that Samsung has used to launch a series of lawsuits against rival companies. The manufacturer maintains that these patents are essential to complying with European mobile standards, but the EU says Samsung may be in violation of a promise it made more than ten years ago. Back in 1998, the firm said it would license these essential telephonic patents to competing manufacturers, under the terms outlined in FRAND. The Commission explained the obligation and its potent...

Foxconn plans to build five additional factories in Brazil to produce liquid crystal displays for future Apple products. The plan was announced by the Secretary of Planning and Development for the State of São Paulo, Julio Semeghini, and reported by Brazilian news outlet, Folha. The five factories are in addition to the one already believed to producing iPads and iPhones, and each is reportedly set to employ roughly 1,000 workers. In addition to building Apple products, the factories will also manufacture notebooks, batteries and general electronics products. Officials from both Foxconn and the Brazilian government are said to be meeting to finalize the agreement soon, which São Paulo and ne...

T-Mobile updates FamilyWhere location tracking service for worrisome parents
Like UnlikeFiled in: T-Mobile
It was never intended as such, but The Rolling Stones' song Under My Thumb could easily pass as the anthem of overbearing parents across the globe. Now, T-Mobile is tossing its paranoid constituents a bone with an updated version of its FamilyWhere lineup. First onto the platform is FamilyWhere Check In, a free app that lets kids manually send their location to family members, which is delivered as a web link within a text message. The carrier's more robust application, known as FamilyWhere Locate, is a $10/mo subscription service that automatically provides location tracking for up to ten devices. Here, doting parents (and untrusting spouses) can keep tabs on their family via a web browser ...

Samsung faces antitrust investigation in Europe over use of mobile patents
Like UnlikeFiled in: Samsung
The European Commission announced on Tuesday that it has opened a formal investigation into Samsung’s competitive practices. The Commission will assess whether the Korean manufacturer “used certain of its standard essential patent rights to distort competition in European mobile device markets, in breach of EU antitrust rules.” Samsung has used a collection of its patents to launch a series of lawsuits against rival companies, such as Apple. The technology giant maintains, however, that these patents are essential to implementing European mobile telephony standards. Samsung may now be in violation of a promise it made in 1998, when the company gave its “irrevocable commitment to the European...

Nikesh Arora rumored to become Motorola CEO after acquisition
Like UnlikeFiled in: Motorola
Nikesh Arora, Google’s SVP and Chief Business Officer, will run Motorola once the Google acquisition closes later this year, according to rumor published by Business Insider. Arora ran the company’s international business for Eric Schmidt, taking over the global business after the former CEO stepped down. Arora has reportedly been “agitating” for a CEO position and was included on a short list of candidates to head Yahoo. It is possible, however, that a promised CEO slot at Motorola could have prompted Arora to continue with Google. The rumor further notes that Dennis Woodside, Google’s current head of U.S. sales, will take over Arora’s current position.
