Pirates Bay founders' Supreme Court appeal rejected, sentence finalized
Like UnlikeOn Wednesday, Sweden’s Supreme Court announced that it decided not to grant an appeal in the long-running Pirate Bay trial. After a nine-day trial in April 2009, Peter Sunde, Fredrik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm and Carl Lundström were found guilty of assistance to copyright infringement and sentenced to one year each in prison and payment of roughly $7 million in damages. Each defendant appealed the verdict, and in November 2010 the sentences were shortened, but the fines were increased. The new sentence was again appealed, and now the Supreme Court has rejected those appeals. Sunde must serve eight months in prison, with Neij facing 10 and Lundström to face four months. Svartholm, who missed t...

Pictures of iPod nano with camera re-emerge
Like UnlikeFiled in: Portable Media PlayersAppleiPod nano 6gen
Last year a number of leaks and photos suggested that Apple had a redesigned iPod nano with an integrated camera in the works. The new device wasn’t released last time Apple refreshed its iPod family, but now another round of pictures has surfaced that lends credence to the possibility that such a device may launch in the near future. The images show a camera-equipped iPod nano complete with its signature clip design, and the device appears to be the same size as the current-generation iPod nano. It remains unclear if Apple will ever release an iPod nano with a camera but the source, Apple.pro, has published early details surrounding Apple hardware in the past that ended up panning out. Anot...

Qualcomm announces Q1 earnings: revenues up 40%, $1.4 billion in profit
Like UnlikeThe mobile revolution has been good to Qualcomm. Its Q4 2011 earnings were impressive enough, but the company is kicking off 2012 with even more staggering numbers. The Snapdragon creator pulled in $4.68 billion in revenue during Q1, a 40 percent increase over the same time last year and 14 percent higher than last quarter. Profits were also way up, hitting $1.4 billion, a 20 percent increase over last year and a whopping 33 percent higher sequentially. The company appears to have roundly beat analyst expectations, earning 97 cents per share. It's also worth noting that this doesn't include any boost from the spectrum deal with AT&T. Sales of its MSM chips were, of course, the big star here ...

Facebook files for biggest Internet IPO in history at $5 billion
Like UnlikeFacebook on Wednesday formally filed documents with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in its first step toward an upcoming initial public offering. Facebook said it is looking to raise $5 billion with its IPO, which has been eagerly anticipated by the Street and by investors. Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs and others will underwrite the offering, and Facebook could raise as much as $10 billion following its IPO. Reports surfaced this past Friday stating that Facebook had plans to file for an IPO this week at a valuation of between $75 billion and $100 billion. At $5 billion, Facebook’s IPO would be the biggest Internet IPO in history, besting Google’s $1.9 billion 20...

ITC reportedly rejects Barnes & Noble's antitrust complaint against Microsoft
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftBarnes & Noble
Barnes & Noble and Microsoft are currently tied up in two separate legal battles, one being heard by the Department of Justice and the other by the International Trade Commission. In March 2011, like previous Android vendors, Microsoft accused Barnes & Noble’s NOOK and NOOK Color of infringing on the company’s patents. The software giant, which takes in roughly $450 million a year through Android royalties, was looking to license the infringed patents to the bookseller, but the company fired back with claims that Microsoft was creating an abusive monopoly. It is now being suggested by patent expert Florian Muller of FOSS Patents that the ITC is likely to reject Barnes & Noble’s antitrust com...

ARM CEO thinks Windows is more "familiar" than Android
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
As we learned yesterday from ARM's quarterly earnings call, the company is dominating the mobile space and has been seeing huge profits. What we didn't hear were some comments that ARM CEO Warren East made regarding consumer feelings towards Windows as compared to Android.
Apparently, the ARM CEO believes that consumers are more familiar with Microsoft and Windows than they are with Android, and it's hard to argue that point. East believes that this "awareness advantage" will help Microsoft as it pushes into the tablet market. That said, East doesn't think that we should count out Android tablets just yet, making a parallel to the slow burn of Android phones that has now ramped up into some...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIALumia 800
WeLoveWP.hk have been running some battery charging tests on the Nokia Lumia 800, which post firmware fix should have a battery that is charging at full capacity, unlike earlier, trying to find the best way to optimally charge the device.
Their results were as follows:
Source Current
Computer USB 2.0 port 3.85V; ~110mA
Nokia DC-11K Mobile Charging Unit 3.9V; 330mA
iPhone Charger 3.88V; 300mA
Lumia 800 AC-16 Charger 3.95V; 600mA
From the test it is clear charging from the USB port is slowest, with only 110 mA being delivered, while generic and iPhone charges will deliver 3 times as much. Using the included and official Nokia Lumia charger will however result in charging 6 times as fast, givi...

U.S. Law Enforcement Used Warrant to Spy on MegaUpload
Like UnlikeEver since MegaUpload was hit with arrests and seizures last week, everyone has been wondering how the US government managed to get access to internal communications between the company’s founders. Most of the incriminating conversations cited in the indictment are Skype IMs that would have long been purged from Skype’s servers. According to Cnet, it has been confirmed that the FBI obtained a warrant to obtain the data, and that might have included using government-issued spyware. The FBI gained court approval in 2007 to use spyware that could be planted on a suspect’s computer, allowing the feds to monitor a user’s activities. While Skype deletes data from its servers after 30 days, a local...
