Nikon replaces high-end Coolpix "P" series with P510 and P310

Posted on Feb 02, 2012 by MG15

Nikon has updated its photographer-friendly P series with the Coolpix P510 and P310. The P510 gains GPS and an extended zoom, now reaching from 24-1000mm equivalent. This 42x range is likely to be quite a challenge for its VR image stabilization system, so we'll be interested to see how it performs. The P310 is a more subtle upgrade of the P300. Like the P510 it gains a 920k dot LCD and moves to using a 16MP back-lit CMOS sensor, with all the high-speed, multi-shot image processing modes it enables. More than any of the technology changes, we're most interested to see the addition of a 'Fn' button on the front - if this can be set to control useful functions, it may improve the handling of a...

Filed in: Google

Google is implementing a new system that automatically redirects users to country-specific URLs that match their IP address' location when they're trying to access a Google Blogger site. It's being rolled out slowly and Google says it will the company to "continue promoting free expression and responsible publishing while providing greater flexibility in complying with valid removal requests pursuant to local law," much like Twitter's new censoring tools. For example, this will allow the search giant to shut down a pro-Nazi blog at [example].blogspot.com.de for German users while letting those in countries that allow such content to continue viewing it at the [example].blogspot.com URL. Goog...

Gigabyte Intros Radeon HD 7950 WindForce 3 Graphics Card

Gigabyte Intros Radeon HD 7950 WindForce 3 Graphics Card

Posted on Feb 01, 2012 by MG15

Gigabyte flagged off its Radeon HD 7950 lineup with a custom-design graphics card. Carrying the model number GV-R795WF3-3GD, the card makes use of Gigabyte's custom-design WindForce 3 cooling solution strapped on to a more familiar-looking AMD reference design PCB that's colored blue. The WindForce 3 cooler consists of a complex aluminum fin array that draws heat from the GPU, memory, and VRM. Heat is supplied by several copper heat pipes, the heatsink is then ventilated by three 80 mm fans that are tilted in way that maximizes hot air to be pushed out of the rear panel and the top. Overclocked out of the box, the GV-R795WF3-3GD comes with clock speeds of 900 MHz core and 1250 MHz (5.00 GHz ...

PlayStation Vita games get discount on PSN

PlayStation Vita games get discount on PSN

Posted on Feb 01, 2012 by MG1

Sony has confirmed that PlayStation Vita games will be sold at a discounted price as downloads from the US PlayStation Store.
This system is already in operation in Japan, and with the US market going the same way it's likely that the UK PlayStation store will also be seeing discounted downloads.
The downloads will also be available at the same time as the physical media, so apart from fans of the collector's edition, it could spell the end to the launch day shop queue.
Games on physical media are hardly ever sold at full price, so the download discount may not be that significant, or an overall discount at all.

There is no shortage of ways for YouTube to monetize its site right now. It has sponsored videos, ad-supported content, and pay-per-click overlay ads. But that might not be enough, as the head of the viral video site has suggested there might be premium content on its way to YouTube, effectively ending the great legacy of 100% no-barrier, free-to-watch videos that made the site what it is today.

Fujifilm X-S1 now available in the UK

Fujifilm X-S1 now available in the UK

Posted on Feb 01, 2012 by MG1

The Fujifilm X-S1, which Pocket-lint had a brief fling with over in Vegas at CES, has hit UK shops, priced up at £699.
The Fujifilm X-S1 is a bridge camera that features a Fujinon 26x optical zoom lens and the same EXR sensor technology as the brand's X10 compact.
The fixed lens offers a range of 24-624mm (35mm equivalent), and a maximum aperture of f/2.8. Couple this with Fujifilm’s proprietary Intelligent Digital Zoom and you're apparently looking at a doubled focal range without a drop in picture quality. That means that it is possible to zoom up to a boasted 1,248mm.

Marko Ahtisaari, Head of Nokia Design, talks about future products

Posted on Feb 01, 2012 by MG15

When Nokia reported their Q4 2011 financial results last month there was one bit of news in there that we glossed over. Marko Ahtisaari, son of Martti Ahtisaari, former President of Finland, had his title upgraded from Head of Nokia Design to Executive Vice President of Nokia Design. His responsibilities will stay the same, he’ll just bring home more bacon. Anyway, Marko recently sat down with The Guardian and let out some details about the future of Nokia’s devices. Let’s start with the obvious: Near Field Communication (NFC) will be huge. We’ve been saying that forever now, but because the Head of Design at a huge multinational corporation said it in an interview we have to stand up and pa...

Linux Dev Unveils Fully Open, KDE/Mer-Powered "Spark" Tablet

Tablets are nifty, but for the most part, they're built to be walled gardens; Apple is notorious for its heavy-handed curation, Microsoft plans on keeping Windows 8's Metro-style apps close to the chest, and the hot-selling Kindle Fire is a deeply tweaked and thoroughly managed variant of Android. One Linux developer hopes to make things more customizable with Spark, a Mer/KDE Plasma Active-powered tablet that's fully unlocked and open for tinkering.

Apple has today issued an update for their professional video editing suite, Final Cut Pro X (FCPX). The update carries version number 10.0.3 and re-introduces some crucial elements, such as multicam editing. AMD Radeon HD 7950 Graphics Cards Now Available

Maybe the Radeon HD 7970 graphics cards launched earlier this month wasn't quite your cup of tea. At $550, you should make damn sure your proverbial tea meets your tastes before you buy it. But that's the thing about graphics cards; like tea, they come in a variety of flavors. Today, AMD launched its second 28nm next-gen GPU, the Radeon HD 7950, another high-end offering -- but this one costs $100 less than its 7970 sibling.

Intel charges a nominal fee (compared to the cost of a replacement processor) for the added protection, but CyberPowerPC's offering it for free on select setups.

You're not a rookie on the Internet anymore so it's inexcusable to lock down your online accounts with weaksauce passwords. We're sure your girlfriend's fly, but using her name as a password is a poor security practice, and so is using any of the commonly recognized passwords out there, like 123456 and iloveyou, to name just two. If you're serious about security, you're using multiple passwords that are difficult to guess, which can also be difficult to remember. Symantec wants to help.
