Panasonic brings out ZS15, ZS20 compact superzooms

Posted on Jan 31, 2012 by MG1

Panasonic used the lead-in to the CP+ show to introduce even more Lumix point-and-shoot cameras past what it showed earlier in the month. The 20X, 24-480mm ZS20 as the flagship hopes to cure some of the problems of compact superzooms with a new internal structure and nano surface-coated lens that hope to cut back on lens flares and ghosting. A new GPS system both handles the usual geotagging and can even load map data from a DVD like one would car navigation, filling in much more information for 82 countries, such as landmarks.

Razer Tiamat 7.1 gaming headset delayed again until February

Razer Tiamat 7.1 gaming headset delayed again until February

Posted on Jan 31, 2012 by MG1

Razer's Tiamat 7.1 gaming headset was already running late, and now it's been pushed back again. The company puts the delay down to its "relentless pursuit of quality," and promises shipments will be made sometime in February. To make it up to customers who've been waiting for their chance to listen to Modern Warfare 3 in true 7.1 surround, Razer is giving away coupons for a free t-shirt and flask, along with free shipping — though it made the same offer last time it delayed the Tiamat. Alternatively, a host of simulated 7.1 options are available for those tired of waiting.

Notion Ink explains picking TI over NVIDIA for Adam II | Electronista

Notion Ink CEO Rohan Shraven has taken the unusual step of explaining why his Android-based tablet company opted to follow its NVIDIA Tegra 2-powered Adam tablet with a TI OMAP 4 processor for its Adam II . Rather than plumping for the quad-core Tegra 3, Shraven argues that the TI OMAP platform offers Notion Ink certain advantages. As a small vendor, with its limited software and hardware engineering resources, it believed that it could not leverage the NVIDIA Tegra 3 as well as it can the TI OMAP 4, leading to a better implementation for end users.

At this year’s International CES show in Las Vegas, we spoke to Tetsuya Yamamoto, General Manager of Nikon’s Development Headquarters within its Imaging Division. We discussed the market’s reaction to the 1 J1 and V1, and how the system might evolve in the future. According to Yamamoto, Nikon has been pleased with the success of the 1 System, especially the J1, in the American market but that even before the system's launch 'we were very confident that there were customers out there who would gravitate towards the V1 and the J1'. Yamamoto told us that Motion Snapshot, which combines a still image with slow motion video in a single capture is a feature that Nikon is keen to improve in the nex...

The axe is set to fall over at NEC Corp in Japan with just about one in 10 of its workers to be cut. NEC has announced that is set to lay off 10,000 workers as it attempts to claw its way out of the red and back into the black. One reason cited for the job losses is stiff competition posed from rivals from foreign countries such as Apple. NEC blames the poor performance and the job cuts on soft demand for its mobile phones.

Samsung Galaxy GTI9070 surfaces as the Galaxy S Advance

Posted on Jan 31, 2012 by MG1

The Galaxy GT-I9070 that surfaced in the past few days undergoing testing at the FCC has been given a name. Turning up in the Philippines, the new model has been dubbed the Galaxy S Advance. While originally thought to be a spin-off of the Galaxy S II, it appears like a cross between the original Galaxy S and the Nexus S, amounting to a what could be described as a Galaxy S 1.5. While it carries the same 1GHz clock speed as the Galaxy S and Nexus S, it includes a more advanced dual-core processor.
Like the original Galaxy S, it carries a 4-inch 800x480 Super AMOLED display and a 5-megapixel camera. However, it also picks up the trademark curved display that normally helps to set the Nexus li...

I don't know what it is about new data centers, but they all seem to resemble the evil lairs of Bond-movie villains. Google's latest, based in a disused paper mill in Finland, is no exception.
Joining the ranks of the Norwegian fjord-cooled data center in a cave and Facebook's $700 million Arctic server farm, Google's new corporate data center is based Hamina, Finland.

Big companies in Silicon Valley have allegedly put in place an agreement that they would not poach each other’s workers. Back in 2007, Apple CEO Steve Jobs shot an e-mail off to Eric Schmidt of Google asking why one of Google’s recruiters was actively going after an Apple engineer. US government rules three Barth patents invalid, sends Rambus scrambling

Posted on Jan 31, 2012 by MG1

Suing's easy. It's the "winning" that trips folks up. Such is the case with Rambus, who has been relying oh-so-heavily on the so-called trio of Barth patents to actively pursue just about every technology company on the planet. For those unaware, Rambus has christened itself as a "technology licensing company," but with the last of three patents used to win infringement suits against NVIDIA and HP being declared invalid, it's probably scrambling for new tactics. According to a Reuters report, an appeals board at the US Patent and Trademark Office declared the patent invalid a few days back, with the previous two being knocked back in September. A couple of months back, Rambus' stock lost 60 ...

With MegaUpload facing irretrievable data loss later this week and rival services locking down their file sharing options, attention has turned to well-used but clandestine rival RapidShare AG and whether it will occupy the cloud storage vacuum or be next in line for the FBI’s attentions. After Sony bought out Ericsson in October 2011 this was the last major hurdle for it to overcome and with this now out of the way, it opens the gates to a ream of Sony branded handsets this year.
Sony Ericsson recorded big losses in Q4 of 2011 and the hope is that with Sony in sole control of the brand, it will be able to turn the ship around and put the smartphone division back on track.
