Sharp LC-42SV49U HDTV Released

Sharp LC-42SV49U HDTV Released

Filed in: TVsSHARPLC-42SV49U

Sharp is proud to announce the release of the first of their HDTVs for 2012, the LC-42SV49U. This 42 inch screen comes with full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution and LCD display technology. It isn’t loaded with features like many other TVs but that helps keep the retail price down to a minimum. The TV is currently priced at just under $330. This makes the TV retail for far less than the benchmark $10 per diagonal inch. The connection panel includes a USB, four HDMI ports, a composite, component, s-video and several audio ports as well. The low retail price might have to do with the recent claims of Sharp’s poor profits last year.

Micron's long time CEO, Steve Appleton, has died in a plane crash at the age of 51 at the Boise Airport on Friday morning. He was reportedly flying a single-engine Lancair plane, which stalled and then nosedived shortly after take-off. Appleton was the only person onboard and died immediately upon impact.
Appleton started working at Micron in 1983 and became the CEO eleven years later in 1994. Micron is most known for storage solutions, such as NAND flash. Intel's and Micron's joint NAND venture, IMFT, is one of the leading NAND manufacturers, and consumers may also be familiar with Micron's subdiary Crucial, a well known SSD and RAM brand. Why Siri Will Never Officially Appear on the iPhone 4

Posted on Feb 07, 2012 by MG1

Since the arrival of the iPhone 4S, users of the humble iPhone 4 have been hoping for a chance to get Siri. While they can unofficially, they never will from Apple.
The iPhone 4S uses Apple's A5 processor. Which you know is more powerful than the A4 built into the iPhone 4—but it also has some weighty audio processing hardware baked into it. Specifically, the A5 is home to Audience's "EarSmart" technology, which uses a digital signal processor to remove background noise and secondary voices so phone calls sound better.

German government recommends Chrome browser

German government recommends Chrome browser

Posted on Feb 07, 2012 by MG1

The most common web browsers in most countries are Google Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer. While in the US, our government doesn’t recommend specific software for security when you’re online, in Germany it’s a different story. Germany’s federal office of information security, known by the German initials of BSI, on the other hand, often recommends software to German citizens for the security.
The BSI has announced that it recommends Google’s Chrome browser for German citizens as the most secure for surfing the web. The reason Chrome is recommended over other available browsers by BSI is that the browser isolates itself from the operating system of the computer, and because it has a si...

Torrent search engine BTJunkie closes its doors

Posted on Feb 07, 2012 by MG1

BitTorrent search engine BTJunkie voluntarily shuttered its service today, leaving behind only a holding page with the dates 2005-2012 and a message for its users:
"This is the end of the line my friends. The decision does not come easy, but we've decided to voluntarily shut down. We've been fighting for years for your right to communicate, but it's time to move on. It's been an experience of a lifetime, we wish you all the best!"
In an interview with TorrentFreak, the site's founder explained that the legal action being faced by fellow file sharing sites like The Pirate Bay and Megaupload was a factor in its decision to close, though clarified that BTJunkie had never faced similar threats. ...

Sony has revealed that all PlayStation Network accounts are to be rebranded this week, with the service to be folded into the Sony Entertainment Network.
The Sony Entertainment Network brand is big news for Sony as it is the first time the company has tried to bunch all of its online services under one moniker.
Usually Sony's PlayStation sector is immune to any changes the rest of the company is going through, but as of 8 February the PlayStation Network will become part of the Sony Entertainment Network.
Making SENce
Sony has issued a statement to all users of the PSN, explaining that the change will actually change nothing – it is just a lick of paint and a rename.

PlayStation Vita video recording lands with 1.60 software update

PlayStation Vita video recording lands with 1.60 software update

Posted on Feb 07, 2012 by MG1

The PlayStation Vita has been received with much love here at Pocket-lint towers, with Sony's new handheld console being awarded the prestigious Hot Product tag. But even in our glowing review we noted that the lack of video recording on board was "weird".
But our prediction that a future update would come along to rectify this oversight was on the money, as Sony has announced the 1.60 software update will bring the functionality.
The update also adds a Map app feature to the front screen (looking very Google powered) which shows (on the 3G version, at least) your position and also gives the usual array of options such as route planning, satellite views and traffic info.
As well as the video...

Samsung Galaxy S III to land in May with 7mm thin profile

Samsung Galaxy S III to land in May with 7mm thin profile

Posted on Feb 07, 2012 by MG1

While we may not see the Samsung Galaxy S III at Mobile World Congress this year, some more details about the highly anticipated handset have been revealed that may make your geeky mouth water. Or not.
With the prospects of a quad-core Galaxy S III, the expectations for the handset are already pretty high. We can also expect something similar to the Galaxy Nexus’ display, which is a 4.65-inch Super AMOLED HD panel. Now we’re hearing that Samsung’s next flagship phone may come in at a ridiculously thin 7mm thick. While it’s impressive to say the least, this is something I’m not looking forward to.

Apple may partner with Verizon, AT&T and others for iTV content

Apple may partner with Verizon, AT&T and others for iTV content

Posted on Feb 07, 2012 by MG1

Apple will launch its own HDTV called the “iTV,” analyst Peter Misek of Jefferies & Company said on Monday. We’ve written dozens of reports on Apple’s alleged upcoming HDTV, and most speculate that the device will run a version of iOS along with the company’s Siri voice engine that will remove the need for a traditional remote control. Misek also said that Apple is in talks to partner with carriers such as Verizon Wireless and AT&T for access to exclusive and non-exclusive content, Bloomberg reported on Monday. Best Buy recently leaked possible details on the iTV and the retailer’s survey suggested the device will have a 42-inch display and a $1,499 price tag. The TV could launch near the mi...

Windows 8 Kernel for Windows Phone 8 may NOT happen

Posted on Feb 07, 2012 by MG1

After the recent leak by Pocketnow and confirmation by Paul Thurrott, one would have though it was a sure thing that the next version of Windows Phone will run on the NT Windows 8 kernel.
Not so fast says The Register, who claims to have spoken to insiders who are not so sure that this idea will come to fruition.
Quoting sources close to Microsoft , they note the leak is true, but say no decision has been taken to base the mobile platform on the Windows 8 kernel.
They note the information leaked was real, but should be thought of as more of a blueprint, a wish-list, than a concrete roadmap, say sources. In particular, the decision to throw out the 15-year-old Windows CE kernel in favour of ...

So how's that 'big and bulky' strategy working out for HTC?

CFO of HTC Winston Yung admitted the company “dropped the ball” in 2011 and its high-end devices are not selling as well as expected. This is due mostly to HTC’s hardware being substantially thicker than the competition and often having poor battery life.
“While short term performance may not meet the results as expected, we have gained further experience and advancement in the areas of brand management and product innovation,” CEO Peter Chou stated in a press release. “These fundamental strengths and the groundwork we have laid will take us into 2012 with a renewed focus and determination.”
His message seems to echo the same one given by the company’s CFO: HTC shit the bed.

Nokia unveils the white Lumia 800

Nokia used its Conversations blog to unveil the new white Lumia 800. Under the hood, the handset is identical to the cyan, magenta and black version which launched late last year. On the surface, you will get a snowy white casing that nicely accents the curved black display. According to Nokia, this isn’t some cheap spray-on job either. Instead, the phone’s unibody polycarbonate shell is dyed all the way through. Judging from the images release by Nokia, those who prefer blanc to black will be wowed by this handset.
