Google's Chrome browser will definitely be available as a Metro app in Windows 8. It works in both the Metro and Desktop settings, but not on the ARM platform, since Internet Explorer is the only browser Microsoft allows there. You'll be able to try it out in the next Chrome Dev channel release.

Motorola DROID BIONIC receives some enhancements with its latest maintenance update
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesMotorolaDROID BIONIC
Although it’s far from being the shiniest thing out of Motorola’s stable, the already aging DROID BIONIC is still receiving some love in the form of a new over-the-air update. Verizon Wireless customers still holding dearly to the smartphone, in light of some recent ones, should be seeing that notification hitting their device right about now.
Bringing the smartphone up to version 5.9.905, it brings forth a few enhancements that should no doubt keep existing owners content enough to still call the device their own. From the looks of it all, the maintenance update features the following items:

Vodafone and O2 to team up for UK 4G network
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
While Everything Everywhere patiently waits for approval on it's next-generation network, Vodafone and O2 has announced that it'll be forming an alliance to create a single shared grid in the UK. While the two UK carriers will still compete for customers, it'll pool the infrastructure needed to roll out 4G coverage. Both companies will run on separate spectrum and each will have access to around 18,500 masts, apparently boosting the number of sites by more than 40 percent for each operator. The duo will also cooperate on new masts in remote areas and intend to start later this year -- once Ofcom's had its say.

Thunderbird 13 lets you register for custom email addresses without leaving the app
Like UnlikeMozilla's rapid update cycle for email client Thunderbird continues, and the latest version now lets users sign up for a new custom email address without having to leave the app. The company has partnered up with domain name services Hover and Gandi to offer the feature, and while anyone can use it, the current partners are based in Europe and North America, so country-specific domains outside of those regions aren't available — though Mozilla says that it's working on finding more partners to help cover the rest of the world. Aside from that, the latest update also lets you connect your account to filesharing service YouSendIt for sending large files — so instead of a big attachment, you ca...

And, in impressive fashion, Brian McClendon, VP of Google Maps, just announced that the fleet of camera-topped vehicles has driven a total of 5 million unique miles and collected an impressive 20 petabytes of imagery. That's no small feat, to be sure. To hear more from Google on its latest developments in Maps, check out our liveblog!

The Pirate Bay blocked by Be Broadband
Like UnlikeThe Pirate Bay has seen another broadband provider slam down the shutters, with BeBroadband confirming it has blocked UK access to the controversial torrent search site. The move follows rival ISP Virgin Media preventing its subscribers from accessing The Pirate Bay in early May, following an April court ruling that five of the largest providers must block the site after complaints that it enabled and promoted content piracy. Unsurprisingly, BE’s decision has been met with no small amount of dismay.
Skeptics of the UK ruling have pointed to the fact that ways to circumnavigate the ban – such as using VPN services – are so straightforward as to make implementing it ridiculous. Be Broadband in...

6.5m LinkedIn passwords reportedly leak: Hackers crowdsourcing encryption crack
Like UnlikePassword information for 6.5m members of business social network LinkedIn have been leaked, it’s been alleged, with Russian hackers supposedly crowd-sourcing help in breaking the encryption. Although the SHA1 unsalted password hashes revealed do not come with the matching usernames at present, Dagens IT and Per Thorsheim report, it’s possible the hackers are holding off on revealing those so that they can make private use of any unofficial access.
LinkedIn currently has in excess of 150m registered users, as of its own figures earlier this year, so the leaked batch of encrypted passwords don’t represent the entire user-base. However, there are signs that the leak is indeed genuine; according...

Proof that Windows 8 may run Windows Phone apps
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
There have been rumors for a while that Windows Phone 8 apps would work all the way up to the Windows 8 desktop environment, but we haven't actually had any confirmation that this functionality would exist. We have known for a while that Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 would share the same kernel, which meant that this functionality was always possible, but n ow, we have a bit of proof that apps will transcend devices.
Ever since the Windows 8 Preview Release was released last week, code monkeys have been digging through looking for any interesting tidbits that could be gleaned from the code, and one came across a Compatibility Switch line which is checking "IsAppEarlierThanWindowsPhone8". Thi...

NVIDIA details top-tier GeForce GTX 680M Kepler GPU for Ultrabooks, other laptops
Like UnlikeFiled in: Graphic CardsnVIDIAGeForce GTX 680
When NVIDIA took the wraps off its family of 28nm Kepler GPUs, it promised some mobile chips designed for Ultrabooks were soon to follow. Two and a half months later, we haven't seen that many laptops running the 600M series, save for the Acer Aspire M5, which isn't even on sale yet. Now, though, we're about to see a lot more: in advance of Computex, a computer-centric trade show about to be overrun by Ultrabooks, NVIDIA is spilling details on the GeForce GTX 680M. As the top-tier offering in the mobile Kepler lineup, it packs a 720MHz engine clock, 1,344 CUDA cores and a 256-bit memory bus powering up to 4GB of GDDR5 RAM. As a refresher, all of Kepler's GPUs make use of a new GPU Boost feat...

Google's mystery "communication device" could hit the FCC in August
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Fans of mobile technology may already be aware that Google has more than one mystery device in development. There is of course Google’s Project Glass, which is not exactly a mystery any more, although they when and wherefore are still big unknowns. There’s also a “household entertainment device” that hasn't received a lot of coverage from us yet, since it’s still a mystery and it's not clear that it will actually pertain to mobile (although the end product may well integrate with our mobile devices). And now there is evidence of a separate “next generation personal communication device” that Google expects to hit the FCC in August.

HP tells court Oracle owes billions over breach of contract
Like UnlikeFiled in: HP
HP and Oracle made opening statements yesterday in a trial that could see Oracle paying out billions for what HP claims is a clear breach of contract.
HP says Oracle violated a contract between the two companies when Oracle decided to discontinue development of its database software for HP's Itanium-based servers.
Without continued support from Oracle, HP said, the equipment running on Intel's Itanium chip will become useless.
Oracle, meanwhile, claims that there was no contract concerning their support of Itanium-based servers, and that the "brief, breezy" language cited by HP does not apply to the case at hand.

Qualcomm figures out how to support both AT&T and Verizon 4G LTE
Like UnlikeFiled in: AT&T
AT&T has a 700 MHz 4G LTE network, as does Verizon, but those networks aren’t interoperable because they use different blocks of spectrum. There’s a debate in the FCC right now as to whether operators should make their networks interoperable. It isn’t as easy as simply saying “make it so!”, there’s a lot of hardcore science involved with regards to antennas, filters, and power amplifiers. People said that it was going to be impossible to make a phone that supports multiple blocks of spectrum in the 700 MHz band, but Qualcomm has figured it out. In fact, they say that phones should be out by the end of the year that can handle three blocks of spectrum in bands below 1 GHz, three bands above t...

Grab the Samsung Galaxy Nexus for one cent on Amazon Wireless
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungAmazonGALAXY Nexus
As per usual, Amazon Wireless is throwing up some great deals on smartphones and is offering the Samsung Galaxy Nexus for a mere penny. While the handset may be 6 months old at this point (Ancient in Android phone years), it’s still a great phone and grabbing it for a penny is a steal.
Of course, to get the Galaxy Nexus for a penny, you’re going to need to sign a two-year contract with Verizon. Also, this deal is only for new customers, and existing Verizon customers will still have to pay up $149 to get the handset. While we really like the Galaxy Nexus, if you’re looking to upgrade your phone within the next two months, we’d suggest you wait it out for the Samsung Galaxy S III that should ...
