Android 4.0.4 ROM leaks for Verizon's Galaxy Nexus

Posted on Feb 08, 2012 by MG1

A little gem known as Android 4.0.4 wriggled its way onto the interweb last week, and while it was geared specifically for Sprint's Nexus S 4G, a similar version has just cropped up for the CDMA / LTE Galaxy Nexus from Verizon. While it's only available for tenacious users who've unlocked their bootloader, it seems that a host of improvements are on deck for the official release. First and foremost, the ROM is said to be noticeably faster, with the speed gains also extending to the web browser and the device's boot time. The release also packs a new radio file that (at least from user impressions) offers more seamless transitions between the CDMA and LTE networks. All in all, the rest of the...

Posted on Feb 07, 2012 by MG15

Continuing its barrage of compact camera announcements, Canon has revealed some new midrange PowerShot point-and-shoots. An Android app is expected to be available in May. The 0.78-inch thick ELPH 530 HS ($349.99, out April) features a boxy retro design reminiscent of the ELPH APS film cameras, and has a 12x optical zoom, a 10-megapixel CMOS sensor, and the same DIGIC 5 image processor we've seen in recent high-end compacts from the company such as the G12 and S100. The ELPH 320 HS ($279.99, out March...

Sony patent surfaces with odd tablet/Wii U style controller art

Sony patent surfaces with odd tablet/Wii U style controller art

Posted on Feb 07, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Sony

If you think back when the current consoles like the Nintendo Wii and Sony PS3 hit the market, Sony was left playing catch-up and tacked on a rarely used motion control feature of the PS3 to try and match what the Wii had. If the sketches that are included new Sony patent that surfaced are any indication, Sony isn’t ready to let the new Wii U rocking controllers with little LCD screens get the better of it this time around. The Sony patent art is very odd; it shows something that looks more like a tablet or even an eReader then a Wii U controller.

THQ developer approves of Xbox 720 banning pre-owned games

THQ developer approves of Xbox 720 banning pre-owned games

Posted on Feb 07, 2012 by MG1

There is a growing amount of speculation that the next generation of Xbox consoles will know if a game is pre-owned and will prevent it from being played. This is causing a lot of anger from the gaming community at large, as you might imagine. But for the people who make games, it is seen as a boon to the industry, especially one Jameson Durall.
Durall, who was a designer on Red Faction: Armageddon, was quoted as saying, “There’s another big rumor about the next Xbox console that could really start to shake things up… it won’t play used games at all. Personally I think this would be a fantastic change for our business.” The way such a system would work would be for every Xbox 720 game to req...

Adobe's sandboxed Protected Mode for Flash Player coming to Firefox

Adobe's sandboxed Protected Mode for Flash Player coming to Firefox

Posted on Feb 07, 2012 by MG1

It seems like every other day someone is poking a new security hole in Flash Player or Adobe's issuing another patch to fix one. To make it harder for people to exploit vulnerabilities in the rich media player, Adobe is working on a sandboxed Firefox version for Vista and Windows 7, building on the release of its sandboxed Flash Player for Chrome. The sandbox (called Protected Mode) is currently in developer-only beta, with a public release planned for sometime later in the year. According to a blog post from Peleus Uhley of Adobe's Secure Software Engineering Team, Protected Mode on Flash Player for Firefox will run with the same privelege restrictions and job limits as the company's sandbo...

Brazil Files Lawsuit Against Twitter, Says DUI Checkpoint Accounts Must Go

Posted on Feb 07, 2012 by MG1

Twitter is i hot legal water with the government of Brazil today, which has filed a lawsuit against the micro-blogging company. At issue are a number of Twitter accounts that Brazilian authorities say are being used to warn drivers of police traffic controls. The fines are set to start rolling in if Twitter does not close these accounts.
Brazil has been working to reduce rates of driving under the influence in a nation with a reputation for lax traffic laws. Twitter is hugely popular in Brazil, and that has led some individuals to create accounts that tweet the location of police checkpoints and radar traps. The Brazilian government says the accounts are not only illegal under the law, but ...

Verizon and Redbox team up to launch streaming and physical media service later this year

Verizon and Redbox team up to launch streaming and physical media service later this year

Posted on Feb 07, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

It once was a rumor but now it's real: Verizon and Redbox are joining forces on what is said to be the "best of both worlds" -- a service that will offer both physical media and streaming content for subscribers. Details are slim at this point but the supposed "Project Zoetrope" will offer DVD and Blu-ray media in addition to on-demand streaming plus downloadable content. The Netflix-like service will be launching in the second half of this year and, while "multi-platform" support for "devices" is mentioned, it's not stated whether any of those will be non-Verizon. Though, Big Reds' claims that it will "erase all technological boundaries" does make us slightly optimistic. Still, we'll have t...

MSI Z77A-GD55 Motherboard Pictured

MSI Z77A-GD55 Motherboard Pictured

Posted on Feb 07, 2012 by MG1

Here are the first pictures of MSI's Z77A-GD55 motherboard. The GD55 is a notch below the GD65 in terms of its feature-set, and will likely hold a cost-benefit sweetspot. The motherboard is designed to support today's "Sandy Bridge", and tomorrow's "Ivy Bridge" Core processors in the LGA1155 package, and is based on Intel's Z77 "Panther Point" chipset. The CPU is powered by a lighter 9-phase VRM compared to the 12-phase VRM on the GD65. It retains the expansion slot layout of its elder brother, consisting of two PCI-Express 3.0 x16 (x16/NC or x8/x8), four PCIe x1, and one PCIe 2.0 x4 (physical x16).
The Z77A-GD55 has two fewer SATA 6 Gb/s ports compared to the GD65, all its internal ports a...

Gigabyte Intros The 970A-DS3 Ultra Durable 4 Classic Motherboard

Gigabyte Intros The 970A-DS3 Ultra Durable 4 Classic Motherboard

Posted on Feb 07, 2012 by MG1

Gigabyte introduced a new value socket AM3+ motherboard designed for AMD FX processors, the 970A-DS3. Based on the AMD 970 + SB950 chipset, this board is a product of some clever cost-balancing by its designers, which will spice-up both its specs-sheet, and price-tag, compared to the 970A-UD3. To begin with, the 970A-DS3 uses a much lighter component loadout compared to the UD3. The 970A-UD3's Ultra Durable 3 Classic component loadout makes way for Ultra Durable 4 Classic on the 970A-DS3, which includes a better weaved fiberglass PCB that's better resistant to humidity; features high ESD-resistance ICs located in key circuits; anti-surge ICs that prevent installed processors and memory from ...

Facebook and Google agree to Indian censorship demands

“Like China, we too can block such websites” Kait told lawyers from Facebook and Google, going on to refer to laws passed in India last year that mandates a 36-hour take-down from the point of complaint. Both Google and Facebook have already complied with such requests, the two companies confirmed.
Now, the high court has demanded the two firms – along with 19 others – present their plans for a blocking system that will prevent “objectionable material” from being accessed by users in India. A fifteen day deadline has been imposed, though Facebook, Yahoo! and Microsoft have all protested that they are yet to be targeted with specific complaints.
The argument that users are responsible for the...

Microsoft kills the Start button in latest Windows 8 build

Microsoft kills the Start button in latest Windows 8 build

Posted on Feb 07, 2012 by MG1

Microsoft hasn’t been shy about the radical direction it’s taking with the user interface design on Windows 8, but it looks like their latest change may be a big one. PCBeta reports that the latest build of Microsoft’s next operating system does away with the ubiquitous “Start” button, which has graced Windows for almost twenty years. The functionality of the Start button remains, but as a limited “hotspot” in the lower-left corner by default, not unlike the Aero Peek feature in Windows 7. Even that functionality is only present in the classic or desktop mode, which drops the shiny new Metro tile interface for a more traditional windowed UI.

London Olympics Could Prompt Internet Slowdown

London Olympics Could Prompt Internet Slowdown

Posted on Feb 07, 2012 by MG1

We're all used to outages of service and temporary hiccups when it comes to accessing our favorite Web sites, but it's not often that we're advised that the entire Internet may go on the fritz. Nevertheless, that's the message from London Olympics organizers, who released a new report designed to prepare everyone for the July games.
"It is possible that Internet services may be slower during the [2012 Olympic] Games or in very severe cases there may be drop outs due to an increased number of people accessing the Internet," the report says. "In addition, ISPs may introduce data caps during peak times to try and spread the loading and give a more equal service to their entire customer base. Ho...

After losing a trade mark lawsuit last year against a Chinese company, Apple may have to pay a fine and stop selling and marketing the iPad in China. An ironic outcome in the Counterfeit Republic of China, if it finally goes through.
Last year, Apple sued a company called Proview Technology Shenzhen. The latter said they had the rights to the iPad name in continental China, even while the company's Hong-Kong branch sold the name to Apple in 2009. Apple lost that lawsuit.
