German court dismisses Motorola patent lawsuit against Apple
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleMotorola
On Friday, the Mannheim Regional Court of Germany announced that Motorola’s patent lawsuit against Apple had been dismissed. The patent in question was considered essential to the 3G/UMTS wireless telecommunications standard and was used as a “method and system for generating a complex pseudonoise sequence for processing a code division multiple access [CDMA] signal.” Judge Andreas Voss claimed that Motorola failed to present conclusive evidence that Apple infringed upon its patent, however, according to FOSS Patents. Rather than demonstrating Apple’s infringement, Motorola argued that any implementation of 3G/UMTS must then inevitably infringe on the company’s invention. Last December, the ...

HTC may show off 'Endeavour' handset with Tegra 3, 4.7-inch screen
Like UnlikeFiled in: HTC
With Mobile World Congress just around the corner and Samsung holding off on the Galaxy S III, the table is set for a company like HTC to “win” the show. Rumors suggest that it will introduce a monster handset called the “Endeavour” and this could signal a massive change for HTC smartphones.
This doesn’t appear to be the HTC Ville that has been leaked multiple times, as Android Modaco reports that the HTC Endeavour will pack a massive 4.7-inch screen with a 720p HD resolution, will run Android Ice Cream Sandwich presumably with Ice Cream Sandwich and it will have an 8-megapixel camera with all the other goodies you’d expect from a high-end smartphone.

Motorola exec's comments on Android updates don't jibe with reality
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMotorolaGoogleAndroid
This seems like a strange claim, and we're not even sure that we believe what Motorola is saying, but it seems that Motorola executive Christy Wyatt believes that the Nexus hardware which is to blame for the slow updates from manufacturers.
Wyatt is the senior VP and general manager of Motorola's Business Enterprise Unit. According to Wyatt, "When Google does a release of the software ... they do a version of the software for whatever phone they just shipped. The rest of the ecosystem doesn't see it until you see it. Hardware is by far the long pole in the tent, with multiple chipsets and multiple radio bands for multiple countries. It's a big machine to churn." Wyatt says that once manufac...

Telus LTE network launching Friday
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Canadian carrier Telus will launch its LTE network across several provinces on Friday. The network will supplement its current HSPA+ network and should reach 25 million customers by the end of 2012. A handful of new LTE devices, including the Samsung Galaxy Tab and LG Optimus, will be available starting February 10; the Galaxy Note will be coming a few days later.
Telus expects its network to reach average speeds of 12 to 25Mbps, with a theoretical limit of 75Mbps. That's about average for Canada's LTE networks, although Rogers offers a couple of devices that can connect at (theoretically) faster speeds. Telus is behind Rogers and Bell on its LTE launch, but looks like it's hoping to draw pe...

FBI dossier on Steve Jobs from 1991 released to the public
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
In 1991, Apple’s co-founder Steve Jobs was considered for a sensitive position in the Bush Administration, according to a recently released FBI dossier. The 191-page file reveals a background investigation conducted on Jobs when he was being considered for the President’s Export Council. When the Bureau spoke with individuals who knew Jobs, it received a large number of negative feedback with many saying that “Jobs will twist the truth and distort reality in order to achieve his goals.” The FBI was also concerned about Jobs’s prior drug usage and estranged relationship with his daughter, Lisa, who was born out of wedlock. There were a large number of people who praised his upstanding moral c...

Broke Kodak Will Halt All Camera Production
Like UnlikeFiled in: KODAK
Just a few weeks after filing for bankruptcy, Kodak says it will stop producing digital cameras, pocket video cameras, and digital picture frames in the first half of 2012. The move will reportedly save Kodak $100 million a year. Instead, the legendary camera company will focus its efforts on printers. Sad. We really like the Kodak Playsport pocket cam. In fact, it's still featured in the top image for our monthly Bestmodo posts.

Like UnlikeWolfram Alpha has made some fairly big strides in its few short years of existence, but the so-called computational knowledge engine has now rolled out what founder Stephen Wolfram says is the "the single most important development for Wolfram Alpha since the original website launched in 2009." On the input end, you can now upload images, audio and other files (over 60 types in all) for automatic analysis and a detailed report -- according to Stephen Wolfram, the ultimate goal being "to do what a t...

W3C says WebKit's dominance is damaging the web
Like UnlikeThe current dominance of Google Chrome and Apple's Safari browser is damaging the standards of the web, according to Daniel Glazman, the co-chairman of the W3C's CSS standards working group. Chrome and Safari share the WebKit engine, and together currently account for around a third of all browser use. Glazman says that web programmers often overlook other browsers when they use newer CSS features designed specifically for WebKit, creating styles with no alternatives for other browsers to fall back on.
Representatives from Internet Explorer, Opera, and Mozilla have indicated that they see little option outside of implementing the WebKit-specific labels themselves, otherwise the increasing pr...

Megaupload shutdown did nothing to slow piracy, study finds
Like UnlikeThe recent federal takedown of notorious file-sharing service Megaupload was initially seen as a huge victory for owners of copyrighted music and movies, but new research shows this may not be the case. Federal prosecutors successfully shuttered the service last month and arrested seven men associated with Megaupload including site founder Kim Dotcom, who is said to have earned $42 million from the site in 2010 alone. What was initially thought to be a victory for movie studios and record labels is turning out to be an empty win, however, as Megaupload’s closure has had almost no impact on file-sharing.
