Google is getting serious about its corporate schmoozing abilities with a new construction project at the Googleplex in Mountain View, California. The new project is just one of a few construction projects for the company that are taking place on or near the Google campus. In total, the construction projects are said to be costing $120 million.
The biggest of all the construction projects is the Google Experience Center, which is being built at the center of the Googleplex. The Experience Center will be a facility used primarily to show off Google products to potential clients, analysts and other VIP partners. The center will be 120,000 square feet and will not be open to the public, but ra...

EU approves Google's $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility

EU approves Google's $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility

European antitrust regulators granted Google its blessing to acquire Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion. Google is now one step closer to getting complete access to Motorola Mobility’s expansive portfolio of 17,000 patents with the hope to better defend Android from frequent infringement lawsuits.
This marks a major milestone in the acquisition process. Since Google would have the resources to get into the hardware business once it has Motorola’s team on board, one might think it could potentially have an unfair advantage over other Android vendors. It’s possible, but the main use for Motorola Mobility will be patents. The competition, particularly Apple, targets Android in so many lawsuits...

Yar, Mateys! All Of Pirate Bay Made Available As A Single 90MB Zip File

Yar, Mateys! All Of Pirate Bay Made Available As A Single 90MB Zip File

Posted on Feb 14, 2012 by MG1

Oh, those tricky Pirate Bay folks. The Teflon buccaneers have always managed to stay one step ahead of the law; for example, the site recently switched to the .SE domain to avoid a Megaupload-style takedown and three of its founding operators fled Sweden to avoid facing jail time and millions in fines. Now, a Pirate Bay user has released a zipped 90MB file containing the key components of every torrent hosted by the site. Basically, if Pirate Bay goes down, anyone with this file will be able to get it up and running again lickity split.

Study Finds BitTorrent Does Not Hurt U.S. Box Office Numbers

Study Finds BitTorrent Does Not Hurt U.S. Box Office Numbers

Posted on Feb 14, 2012 by MG1

Researchers from the University of Minnesota and Wellesley College recently got together to answer one simple question: does BitTorrent hurt U.S. box office numbers? According to this study, the answer is a resounding ‘no,’ much to the chagrin of the movie industry. The study did find a correlation in the data, but it amounts to Hollywood throwing away money.
One of the talking points used to push SOPA and PIPA in recent months was the terrible impact illegal downloads were having on movie ticket sales. The paper in this case found that the volume of BitTorrent downloads a movie got had no measurable effect on box office numbers in the initial U.S. release. However, for films that were not r...

Google Paid $410,000 for Chrome Bugs

Google Paid $410,000 for Chrome Bugs

Posted on Feb 14, 2012 by MG1

Since November 2010, when Goggle began offering cash for bug reports, the company said it paid more than $410,000 to more than 200 individuals who found more than 1100 "legitimate issues" and 730 that qualified for a reward. An additional $19,000 was paid to charities chosen by bug reporters.
The "vast majority" of bug reports were motivated by the potential reward to disclose their discovery. So, even if Google paid more than $400,000, this seems to be a bargain when compared to the potential damage just one bug could have caused.

Google defends Google Wallet despite hacking wave

Google Wallet has been the subject of the latest round of security paranoia, but Google has come forward to say there is nothing wrong with the product and anyone who is at risk of losing sensitive Google Wallet data is someone who made a specific decision to lower their entire phone’s security, and it is their problem. The search giant is trying to prove that Google Wallet is safe, and this round of bad publicity should not be taken out of proportion.

Microsoft Store India hacked, username and password database leaked (update)

Microsoft Store India hacked, username and password database leaked (update)

Reports are coming in that Microsoft's online store in India has been hacked. The site is now offline, but Google's cache shows that the Chinese EvilShadow Team is taking credit for the hack. Worse than the site takedown is that a list of usernames and passwords for accounts have been released — unfortunately, it looks like the site kept its users' passwords stored in plain text, making it very easy for the hackers to get at the sensitive information. We'll update this post as we get more information, but for now, it'd be a good idea to change your passwords if you have an account at Microsoft Store India.

Olympus forecasts larger $412 million loss for fiscal 2011

Olympus forecasts larger $412 million loss for fiscal 2011

Beleaguered Japanese camera and medical instrument maker Olympus is forecasting a ¥32 billion (about $412 million) yearly loss for fiscal 2011, citing the Thai floods and unfavorable exchange rates. While the forecast for yearly operating profits from its medical equipment arm slipped from ¥8.5 billion to ¥6.5 billion, its imaging business actually improved — although remaining unprofitable — going from a ¥15 billion loss in 2010 to a forecasted ¥9 billion loss for the 2011 (year ending March 2012).

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 delivers entry-level Ice Cream Sandwich

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 delivers entry-level Ice Cream Sandwich

Posted on Feb 14, 2012 by MG1

Samsung has outed its latest tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0), the Ice Cream Sandwich successor to the original Galaxy Tab model from 2010. Built around a 7-inch 1024 x 600 PLS LCD display, the new Galaxy Tab 2 has a 1GHz dual-core processor paired with 1GB of RAM, along with WiFi and a 3-megapixel rear facing camera.
There are several signs that this is a budget model, targeting the entry-level in Samsung’s expansive tablet line-up. For a start, the main camera is fixed-focus, and has no LED flash; the front-facing camera, meanwhile, is VGA resolution rather than the more typical 1.3-megapixel or above. It’s also 10.5mm thick, not vast in the grand scheme of things, but still chubbier...

MySpace adds 1 million users since December

MySpace adds 1 million users since December

Posted on Feb 14, 2012 by MG1

Rumours of MySpace's death have been greatly exaggerated – at least, that's what the company is expected to announce today with the news that it has signed up one million new users since December.
The reasons for the renewed interest stem from a new music player, which was launched in December and puts the site in competition with streaming services like Spotify and Last.fm.
MySpace's chief operating officer Chris Vanderhook also reckons the integration with Facebook and Twitter has helped.
What does it say about a social network that it relies on two other social networks to drive its growth? That it's not trying to be a social network, we'd wager.

Samsung unveils Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0), offers Ice Cream Sandwich on a seven-inch platter (Updated: video)

Posted on Feb 14, 2012 by MG1

It looks like Samsung has just taken the wraps off its latest tablet offerings, with the Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) -- an ICS-laced follow-up to the company's original seven-incher. Available in both 3G and WiFi varieties, this redux doesn't mark a huge departure from its predecessor, packing a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and a 1024 x 600 LCD. The big changes, however, come in the software department, with the Galaxy Tab 2 shipping with Android 4.0 straight out of the box. Other than that, you'll find a three-megapixel rear-facing camera, a VGA shooter up front, Bluetooth capabilities, and HSPA+ connectivity. No word yet on pricing or availability, but it's worth noting that we first saw th...

Hacker Says He Compromised Intel, Gained Private Info

Posted on Feb 13, 2012 by MG1

A hacker using the pseudonyms "Weedgrower" and "X-pOSed" is claiming that he compromised Intel and obtained sensitive data by using a flaw in the subscriber segment of Intel's web site. With access to the Intel.com database, the hacker claims he can retrieve sensitive information like credit card numbers, social security numbers, email addresses, passwords and more.
"I've got to give some applause to all these pseudo-security technicians out there," the hacker states. "I cut Intel a break, I have access to a database and another vulnerability which enables the right to read user data. I'll be gracious here and NOT spill the data, but I will provide screenshots to prove that I have access to ...

Anonymous Says They've Killed the CIA's Website (Updated)

Posted on Feb 13, 2012 by MG1

One of Anonymous' Twitter mouthpieces claims the hacker collective just took down CIA.gov. It's definitely down. If this is what it looks like, it could be Anon's greatest hit so far.
The attack—so far cosigned by two of the largest Anon Twitter accounts with a combined 600,000 followers—would fall in line with the group's increasingly ambitious hit list of large corporate interests and powerful law enforcers. And it is, after all, #FuckFBIFriday, the end of the week occasion Anon often uses for hitting governmental agencies. Still, it would take a level of coordination and effort to knock off a federal site that should have revealed itself by now.

Google’s Motorola deal expects EU approval next week

Google’s Motorola deal expects EU approval next week

Posted on Feb 13, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Google’s bid to purchase Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion is set to be approved by the US Department of Justice next week and now insiders claim that the merger will also get the green light in Europe. The European Commission will reportedly approve the deal in “unconditional” form, determining that the acquisition is not anti-competitive.
Both the US DOJ and EC are expected to make their final approvals on Monday, February 13, after which the deal must still seek approval in China, Israel, and Taiwan. It’s possible that the Commission will decide to hold off on approval to open an in-depth investigation, but this is believed to be unlikely.
