HP releases Android kernel for TouchPad, makes hackers' lives easier

You may remember that during the TouchPad fire sale, a few slates slipped out with a rather primitive Froyo build on them. Well, HP doesn't seem to know how the tablets hit shelves with Android on board, but its decided to release the source code for the OS nonetheless. Devs had previously called on the company to hand over the code, but the request was refused since HP had never intended for TouchPads to ship with Android, and thus were not obligated to abide by the open-source requirements. As a gesture of goodwill to the community (and under a certain amount of pressure from it) the former purveyor of all things webOS has reversed course though, and let the TouchPad-specific kernel loose ...

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who is facing increased pressure from world leaders to step down, became Anonymous' latest target after the hacktivist group leaked his email account and reveled his password.
President al-Assad's emails were among 78 other account details from staff members posted on Pastebin by Anonymous, revealing that many of them used two of the worlds least secure passwords: 12345 and 123456.
The hackers, some of whom were based in Israel, used relatively simple hacking methods to gain access to the Syrian mail servers according to a source within Anonymous quoted by Forbes.

Don't mind letting Google watch your every click while browsing the web? Awesome, because the folks in Mountain View want to pay you for letting them do just that. The company is recruiting panelists for a project it's calling Screenwise, a program that will give the internet behemoth more insight into how the general public uses the interwebs day in and day out. Once you opt in, you'll receive a $5 gift card code to Amazon and for up to a year, you'll get additional spending money every three months. But how will The Goog track your mouse clicks? Just before getting paid, you'll have to download a browser extension that will keep an eye on things and send your data back to the mothership. I...

Is Google about to launch a cloud storage service to rival Dropbox?

Is Google about to launch a cloud storage service to rival Dropbox?

If you are an iPhone or an iPad user, iCloud is what caters to your cloud storage needs. If you are a fan of Windows Phone, then chances are that you use SkyDrive on a regular basis. Android users, however, still need to rely on a third-party solution, such as the widely popular Dropbox cloud storage service.
However, rumor has it that Google is almost ready to launch a cloud storage service of its own. And judging by the recent changes that the company did to its terms of service and privacy policy, we are guessing that your files will not only be accessible from any computer, tablet, or smartphone connected to the internet, but also through multiple Google services.

Win a free Samsung Galaxy Note from Samsung Canada

Posted on Feb 09, 2012 by MG1

As part of the promotion for its highly sought-after phablet (phone/tablet), Samsung Canada is running a contest in which it will give away 5 Galaxy Note units to lucky bastards users.
The huge device is heading to Canada’s three networks — including TELUS, Bell and Rogers — and will cost up to $729.99 sans any long-term commitments. Of course, with a three-year contract the price goes down, but you’ll still need to shell out some $200 to get this beast phone/tablet.
The contest has already started and it runs through February 13th at 6:00 pm. You can check out all the details from this page at Samsung’s website. Good luck!
And before I let you, let me once again repeat the Galaxy Note’s sp...

It’s like everyone’s “trading Oranges” these days. Just recently, we’ve seen Three Austria acquiring the local branch of Orange and now Partner Communications is looking to sell its big stake (44.5%) in Orange Israel.
The company has apparently already hired investment bankers to look at options to get as much money as possible for the mobile network. To sweeten the deal, one of the advisors, Deutsche Bank, said it will offer credit lines of up to $1 billion if necessary to the prospective buyer. Partner Communications’ stake is worth around $590 million, though there seem to be an option to bid for the publicly quotes shares as well.

E Ink revenues nose dive 60% in January

E Ink, the popular company that provides paper-look gray-scale displays for eReaders, reported consolidated revenues of $48.02 million in January, down 63.6% from the same month last year and 11% sequentially. The growing popularity of media tablets with full-color displays likely played a big role in the decline — sales of Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble’s Nook Tablet are thought to be eating into the companies’ respective dedicated eReader businesses to an extent. Even though E Ink’s revenue took a nose dive in January, the company said that it expects to post revenues of $1.35 billion this year, up 5% from 2011.

HP releases Android kernel source for TouchPad to CyanogenMod team

Filed in: TabletsHPTouchPad

When the HP TouchPad was released in the summer of 2011 it did little to impress consumers, leading to the tablet being discontinued after a mere 49 days on the market. Remaining TouchPad stock received substantial price reductions, dropping to as low as $99 dollars during a huge fire sale. Shortly after inventory ran dry, crafty hackers had announced their intention to run the Android operating system in replace of WebOS on the TouchPad, and progress thus far has been slow, with alpha versions being released that are fairly stable but have serious bugs. In an act of good will, HP has now released an Android kernel source code to the hacking community. Read on for more.
The source code appea...

Samsung has confirmed that the company will not be holding a press event at this month’s Mobile World Congress trade show, reports to PCMag. At last year’s event the company introduced the Galaxy S II smartphone and in 2010 it announced its Bada mobile operating system. Samsung may still have product introductions at the show, however it will not debut them on the big stage. The company previously confirmed that the highly anticipated Galaxy S III smartphone would not be announced at the event, and BGR exclusively reported in December that Samsung has plans to unveil a new high-end tablet with a high-definition display at Mobile World Congress, though the status of those plans may have chang...

Path update includes privacy fix and apology

Path update includes privacy fix and apology

Posted on Feb 09, 2012 by MG1

Recently, it was uncovered that the social networking app Path had a pretty big privacy problem, when developer Arun Thampi found that the app uploaded the user's entire contacts list without consent. Path's CEO Dave Morin said that the company knew about the problem and that the company had a fix in the works.
Morin said that an updated version of Path had been pushed to the Android Market "a couple weeks ago" which changed the defaults to require users to opt-in and allow their contact lists to be shared with Path, and that the same update had also been submitted to Apple's App Store and was pending approval. Today, that approval has been granted and the update for the iOS version of Path...

Verizon's double data deal returns this Friday, prepare yourselves accordingly

Posted on Feb 09, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

It looks like Verizon's about to double up on double data. According to the Los Angeles Times, Big Red is about to reintroduce the double data promotion that first rolled out in November, and came to a close at year's end. Under the offer, customers signing up for a 4G plan will receive double the amount of monthly data (at no extra charge) for the duration of their contracts, as long as they sign up for two-year deals. Unfortunately, though, the promotion only applies to first time 4G subscribers (or those looking to upgrade from a non-4G plan), and is restricted to smartphones, leaving tablet owners in the dark. As with its original campaign, the redux will only be available for a limited ...

Yahoo's management overhaul continues: Chairman and three board members step down

Posted on Feb 09, 2012 by MG1

Out with the old, in with the new, eh? Yahoo certainly subscribes to that philosophy, as it's already shuffled out Jerry Yang in favor of Scott Thompson as its CEO, and now the company will be adding four fresh faces to it's board. Among those departing Yahoo is Roy Bostock -- which ends his four year reign as Chairman of the board -- who is perhaps most well-known for having a hand in turning down Microsoft's money in 2008. With this most recent shuffling at the top, Yahoo's down to just seven board members, but the search is on to find replacements for the departed directors. Who will be the lucky chosen ones? No one can say for sure, but given Yahoo's declining status, whoever joins up wi...

The free version of IE9 features all of the literature from CEOP, which offers a guide to parents and carers with a view to protecting youngsters, and one-click access to sites like thinkuknow.co.uk.
