Windows 8 Wireless Networking Secrets Revealed

Windows 8 Wireless Networking Secrets Revealed

Posted on Feb 13, 2012 by MG1

With a consumer preview on the horizon, Microsoft recently provided some details about the wireless networking features in Windows 8.
Redmond has re-engineered the wireless networking stack to optimize the experience in Windows 8, the company said in a recent blog post.
People want similar mobility on their PCs as they get on their smartphones," wrote Billy Anders, a group program manager on Microsoft's devices and networking team. "It is unlikely that your end goal is just to get connected to the Internet. Instead, connecting to the Internet is a step (or a hurdle) towards what you really want to do, like surf, socialize, or explore, and you would prefer that your PC is connected and ready ...

ACTA faces another setback in Europe as Germany delays signing

ACTA faces another setback in Europe as Germany delays signing

Posted on Feb 13, 2012 by MG1

The controversial ACTA agreement is facing a new setback in Europe after the German government announced today that it won't sign the agreement, at least not for now. Other nations including Latvia, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia have also backed out in recent days, but as Europe's biggest economy if Germany decides to withdraw its support of ACTA the move could spell trouble for the international agreement.
Details are scarce at this point but according to reports, the German justice ministry voiced its concerns about ACTA, while a foreign ministry spokesperson said that the country needed "time to carry out further discussions" about the treaty. The public outcry against ACTA may ...

Photos of unannounced HTC Ice Cream Sandwich phone leak ahead of MWC

Posted on Feb 13, 2012 by MG1

Images of an unannounced Android smartphone from HTC have been published online ahead of a possible announcement at the Mobile World Congress trade show later this month. The nameless device features a design similar to Verizon Wireless’s DROID Incredible line of phones, leading phoneArena.com to speculate that it could hit the market as the DROID Incredible 3. The smartphone is running Android 4.0.1 Ice Cream Sandwich along with Sense 4.0 — just like the HTC Ville — and other notable specs include a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel camera and 4G LTE connectivity. Given the timing of the leak, we may see HTC introduce the phone alongside the ultra-thin HTC Ville and the...

Nokia Lumia 710 sold out at Vodafone Portugal

Posted on Feb 13, 2012 by MG1

The Nokia Lumia 710 only launched in Portugal a week or two ago, but is already sold out at Vodafone Portugal. The country, where Nokia still has a very strong brand, have been waiting on tenterhooks for the launch of Nokia’s Windows Phone 7 handsets, which might explain the carrier running out of stock so quickly.
Fortunately TMN.pt still has some in stock, so if you are desperately looking for the handset there, try your luck here.

Samsung Galaxy S III concept makes us wish it is the real deal

Samsung Galaxy S III concept makes us wish it is the real deal

Posted on Feb 13, 2012 by MG1

Anything goes in concept renders, but some of them hit the sweet spot between a wacky dream device and the a plausible but boring reality. The homebrew concept by NAK Studio of the hotly-anticipated Samsung Galaxy S III below is just relaying what many customers of Samsung's otherwise stellar flagship phones want - a more sophisticated outer shell design.
Nothing wrong with plastic - it is durable, lightweight, and allows for better signal penetration, but introducing some metal in the chassis will give the Galaxy S III a more premium feeling without a doubt.
The concept render artist, who is not affiliated with Samsung in any way, stays otherwise very true to the slim Galaxy S II, with the ...

Motorola Gleam+ is a RAZR-like clamshell

Posted on Feb 13, 2012 by MG1

Motorola launched a successor of its RAZR-like Gleam clamshell, simply called Gleam+. That “plus” is well deserved since the new device looks much better than the original Gleam model. Moreover, specs are also bumped up, though at its core Gleam+ remains a feature phone.
Speaking of specs, this fancy fella’ rocks a 2.8-inch WQVGA (240×400 pixels) internal display, external screen comprised of 144 LEDs, 2-megapixel camera with fixed focus, Bluetooth 2.1, FM radio, 3.5mm headset jack, and 50MB of built-in storage that is further expandable with microSD memory cards.

Google Chrome 18 beta accelerates 2D Canvas, older PCs

Google Chrome 18 beta accelerates 2D Canvas, older PCs

Google in the same breath as the Chrome 17 final release has also posted a beta release of Chrome 18. The new version swings attention to graphics and now hardware accelerates 2D elements using HTML5's Canvas spec, a common part of more advanced websites. Animations and action-sensitive websites should see the most benefit.
Those with older systems that can't support the WebGL standard are getting a partial help through the addition of a software renderer, SwiftShader. Although not as fast as native support, the TransGaming-built converter is potentially faster than the regular renderer for those using older graphics hardware or operating systems.

Apple patent from 2010 tracks your eyes to give 3D illusion on screen

Apple patent from 2010 tracks your eyes to give 3D illusion on screen

The short history of 3D on smartphones has not presented enough information to determine if there is a market for something that many consider to be a gimmick. 3D handsets in the States didn't blow everyone away and the 3D enabled LG Thrill 4G was named the phoneArena Best Budget Friendly smartphone of the year for 2011 which tells you that the price of the model continued to drop after launch. Of course, it is possible that the technology never goes any further than the filing considering that it was submitted in 2010 before the soft sales for the Nintendo 3DS, the LG Thrill 4G and the HTC EVO 3D showed that the public wasn't really interested in the third dimension on their mobile devices....

Mystery HTC Ice Cream Sandwich phone for Verizon surfaces

Mystery HTC Ice Cream Sandwich phone for Verizon surfaces

Posted on Feb 13, 2012 by MG1

Looky what we have here – a brand new HTC Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone! What's that model we're dealing with here? Well, you might be surprised, but we actually don't have a clue. We were recently approached by a tipster of ours who was generous enough to share these pics with us. Thanks to the photos, we can learn quite a bit about this mysterious handset, but unfortunately, we can't be sure how it's going to be called, or what carriers it may end up on. However, some of our observant readers have noted that the 4G LTE logo that's visible during the loading screen is the one that Verizon uses for its handsets, so that's a pretty good guess as to where the phone may end up.

Unstoppable file-sharing network spells trouble for copyright holders

Unstoppable file-sharing network spells trouble for copyright holders

Posted on Feb 13, 2012 by MG1

Copyright holders thought they had scored a major victory last month when one of the biggest file-sharing networks in the world was shuttered. Megaupload had been responsible for an estimated 30% to 40% of all file-sharing traffic worldwide, but a recent study suggests that the network’s closure did absolutely nothing to slow piracy related to file-sharing. To compound matters, another network that has flown under the radar for some time has now been dragged into the spotlight, and it may pose one of the biggest threats yet to copyright owners and their content. Read on for more.
“Tribler” is a peer-to-peer file-sharing client that is completely decentralized. “The only way to take it down i...

PIN-sized security hole puts the kibosh on pre-paid Google Wallet cards for now

PIN-sized security hole puts the kibosh on pre-paid Google Wallet cards for now

Posted on Feb 13, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Recently, Google Wallet has had some problems with PIN security. At first, there was a breach available that could lead to your PIN getting stolen from a rooted device along with user IDs and all the information needed to break into your Google Wallet account. Now, that possibility has spread to non-rooted units as well. If your phone is stolen and you are not using the lock screen, your PIN number could be "reassigned" and someone with criminal intent could have access to the pre-paid balance attached to your phone. Because of this, Google has stopped the provisioning of pre-paid cards until it can come up with a permanent fix.
Still, Google says that Google Wallet has multiple levels of pr...

Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 leaked, says it'll arrive later this month

Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 leaked, says it'll arrive later this month

Posted on Feb 13, 2012 by MG1

Whoa there, another phone leak? It could only be the run-up to Mobile World Congress. This time, it's Samsung that's let slip, and the not-particularly high-end Galaxy Mini 2. Mini in size, minor in specifications, it will purportedly arrive with a 3.3-inch display at 480 x 320 resolution, running Gingerbread on an 800MHz processor. Unfortunately, at that speed, don't expect to get any Adobe Flash action on this presumably entry-level phone. It'll be capable of HSDPA data speeds up to 7.2Mbps; add in a three-megapixel camera, 3GB of built-in storage and it's all starting to sound a bit 2008. GSM Arena's mole pegs it for a February release, so that could mean it sprints out ahead of MWC, but ...

Google files to test "next-gen personal communication device"

Google files to test "next-gen personal communication device"

Posted on Feb 13, 2012 by MG1

Gather round everyone, because it is time for some blind speculation! An FCC filing has come out which shows that Google is planning to test a new "next-gen personal communication device" on its Mountain View campus and around the country. There is almost no information as to what the device could be, but that just means we get to speculate wildly as to what it could be.
The only information on the filing is that the device includes both WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. The filing says the testing period is from January 15th to July 15th of this year, and that Google wants to test 102 units across the US. The device is listed as being just a prototype, although it is listed as having been m...
