Apple gets 'Samsunged' again, this time by Amazon

With great power comes great responsibility — and a flurry of advertising campaigns that target your wares. Samsung tried to make its name a verb in a recent round of anti-Apple ads where senseless iPhone owners got “Samsunged,” and the South Korea-based vendor’s campaign culminated with a $10 million extravaganza that aired during the Super Bowl. Amazon is next up to the plate, and the company’s recent commercial takes aim at Apple’s iPad. A woman sunbathing and reading a book on her Kindle is approached by a passing iPad owner who is intrigued by the fact that she can read in the sunlight. When the man mentions the Kindle’s inability to play movies, she points to a cabana where her two chi...

Siri learning Chinese, Japanese and Russian, starting to speak them next month?

Siri is one of the new features in the iPhone 4S - some like it a lot, others don’t really use it, but it really is a lot of fun trying either way. Your humble voice assistant only speaks three languages, though - English, French and German, which leaves a huge amount of people out of the picture. Rumor has it this will get diversified soon - Siri could speak Mandarin Chinese, Japanese and Russian next month.
Now, this aligns with Apple’s announced plans as the official Siri FAQ mentions: “Siri will support additional languages, including Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Italian, and Spanish.”

Apple's going to host a launch event for the iPad 3 in the first week of March, according to sources familiar with the company's plans, as reported by All Things D. San Francisco is the location of the event, but there's no date yet for when the upgraded tablet will be available to buy. This information meshes with the intel that we've been receiving about the iPad 3's launch, placing it around the beginning of next month. If Apple keeps to the same cadence as with the iPad 2, you can expect to see the iPad 3 on sale within two weeks of its announcement.
The specs, according to All Things D's sources, are "pretty much" what has been reported from leaks and rumors up to this point, including ...

Google is preparing to launch a new cloud storage service that will compete directly with popular start up Dropbox and similar services. The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday evening reported that Google is almost ready to announce the new service, which will be called Google Drive. Similar to Dropbox, which creates a virtual drive containing files that are mirrored on a user’s local hard drive and on cloud servers, Google Drive will allow users to store photos, videos, documents and other files in the cloud, and it will be accessible from computers as well as Android tablets and smartphones. The service will launch in the coming weeks according to the report, and it will be free to most user...

Google Wallet PIN cracked on rooted Android devices

Google Wallet PIN cracked on rooted Android devices

Posted on Feb 10, 2012 by MG1

The security of the PIN that protects Google Wallet transactions has been compromised — though most users won't need to worry about the issue for now, as it only applies to users who have rooted their Android smartphone. The key issue is that the PIN is stored on the device itself instead of in the secure NFC element, although it is in an encrypted format. That means that if your Android smartphone is rooted, if somebody takes your phone, he or she will be able to access the encrypted file that stores your PIN. From there, it's a relatively simple matter of running a program that uses a brute force method to guess your PIN.

Foxconn attacked by hacker group, internal information released

Posted on Feb 09, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Foxconn

Foxconn, which has come under fire due to allegations of poor working conditions in its factories, may now be the victim of a hacking attack. 9to5Mac is reporting that a group calling itself SwaggSec was behind the alleged compromise, and was able to gain access to Foxconn's internal networks thanks to an exploit in an unpatched copy of Internet Explorer that was being used by a Foxconn employee. The group made a 6.04MB file available earlier this evening — first on Demonoid, and then on The Pirate Bay — which purported to contain login and password information for Foxconn's email servers, intranets, and various other company-affiliated sites. Also included was what appears to be an internal...

The latest update for Sony's PlayStation 3 is live and available for download from via your PlayStation Netw...oops, Sony Entertainment Network account. While we get used to the new branding (nothing we could see in the system UI has actually changed at all), there's a few tweaks included in v4.10, like some sorely needed upgrades for the web browser and the ability to set the time and date automatically upon each sign-in. A scan of the forums reveals a few who noticed problems with Netflix post-update (which may or may not be update related, deleting Netflix data from the Game Data utility section and/or installing the newest version seems to fix the issue), however most are just seeing sig...

Nokia to cut 4,000 more jobs and move manufacturing to Asia

Posted on Feb 09, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: NOKIA

Finnish phone manufacturer Nokia has announced plans to cut a further 4,000 jobs at its plants in Finland, Hungary and Mexico as the struggling firm tries to reduce manufacturing costs by re-locating production assembly work of its smartphones to Asia.
The move is eerily reminiscent of Nokia’s announcement the same time last year that it would cut nearly 20,000 jobs across its company, as the firm battled dropping sales in Europe and the US amid pressure from more innovative rivals like Apple and the flurry of manufacturers offering Android OS smartphones.
Nokia also reported (PDF) a 74 percent fall in fourth quarter earnings towards the end of January, with sales of its Windows Phones faili...

How a Laser Could Make Your Hard Drive 1,000 Times Faster

How a Laser Could Make Your Hard Drive 1,000 Times Faster

Posted on Feb 09, 2012 by MG1

The reason people are so pumped about solid-state hard drives right now is because they're super-speedy. But if you think your SSD is fast, just wait until a new breed of laser-based hard drives comes to market.
A team of scientists has demonstrated an amazing new way of writing data to magnetic storage devices. It uses lasers, and it can write data to disk about 1,000 times quicker than a normal spindle hard drive. We're talking gigabytes — maybe even terabytes — a second here. How the hell?

Samsung won't host an MWC 2012 press conference

It was shocking enough to hear that Samsung won't introduce the Galaxy S III at MWC later this month, but now the company has gone further by announcing that it won't even hold a press event during the 2012 show. Sascha Segan over at PC Mag was first to hear this troubling news, which deprives us of one of the most colorful and frankly ostentatious events of the year. Samsung should still have a new product or three to launch at MWC, as promised, however the usual big set-piece event is now off the table.

Nokia 803 detailed, last of the Symbian Belles

Posted on Feb 09, 2012 by MG1

What may very well be the final Symbian device on the market has been tipped and detailed, it having what sources are saying is the largest camera sensor on a mobile phone yet. This information comes from BGR who have an exclusive source speaking on what this device will hold: a full 4-inch AMOLED display, for starters, instead of the 3.5-inch display that’d been rumored before. Next there’s an HDMI-out port, a bit of the ol’ microSIM, and NFC built in. This could be the Symbian to bring back the OS or it could be one final fabulous blast before it’s all over forever.
