Samsung Galaxy Note getting Ice Cream Sandwich update across the UK
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGALAXY Note
Good news for the UK-based Galaxy Note owners, with Samsung pushing out the Ice Cream Sandwich update as we speak. The rather big 349MB download not only makes your phablet run the latest version of Android, but also brings a number of enhancements and exclusive apps only users with devices as large as the Note can truly appreciate.
Still don’t see it? Don’t worry, this sort of updates are usually rolled out in stages and soon enough you’ll get your serving of everyone’s favorite candy (at least for the time being).

Nokia shares soar 6% in Finland on rumor of Samsung bid
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungNOKIA
If Finnish investors could go back in time, they probably would have slapped some money down on Nokia's shares. The equity of the Finnish handset manufacturer rose 6% on Friday thanks to rumors that the company is about to get a takeover bid from Korean tech giant Samsung. This isn't the first time such rumors have appeared and exactly one year ago Friday, the same rumor hit the street. The difference is that back then, Nokia was worth $24 billion compared to the current market cap of $11 billion and the shares have dropped 40% over the last three months.

Huawei Activa 4G gets your 4G LTE fix on MetroPCS for $149 contract-free
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHuawei
MetroPCS is known for offering 4G LTE smartphones on the cheap, but it's going for a record today. The Activa 4G isn't just Huawei's first LTE smartphone in the US, it's temporarily the least expensive LTE phone in the country at $149 contract-free for a "limited time." Digging around, it's certainly possible to find out how Huawei and MetroPCS reached that price: the 3.5-inch, 320 x 480 screen, 800MHz processor and five-megapixel rear shooter won't have Verizon Galaxy S III customers developing second thoughts. Still, there is a front VGA camera on the Android 2.3-toting phone, and MetroPCS preloads a copy of the movie Kung-Fu Panda 2 on the bundled 4GB microSD card. You won't have to wait ...

Apple MacBook, iMac Retina display coming to WWDC 2012
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Rumors surrounding a host of next-generation Mac computers with Retina displays have been swirling for months and most expect the rumors to come screeching to a halt on Monday when Apple finally takes the wraps off its new line of Macs. Reports from a dozen or more sources suggest Apple plans to unveil new MacBook laptops and iMac desktop computers with high-resolution displays, and now Apple itself is hinting that high-definition Macs are on the horizon. As The Next Web notes, Apple recently approved an update in its closely guarded Mac App Store for an app called FolderWatch. The app, which was recently featured as an Apple staff favorite, lists “Retina graphics” among its most recent adde...

Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 available now in the UK for tiny hands and the people that have them
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGALAXY mini 2
A Mini 2 to migrate you (okay, your Mum) from dumb to smart? That's just what Samsung intends to do as it makes the 3.27-inch Galaxy phone available across the UK this week. The wee Gingerbread handset, sporting a colorful sunny yellow plastic backing, is dressed to impress, but that's because this low-ender doesn't fuss with the specs. Under that cheerful casing lies a single-core 800MHz CPU, 512MB RAM, 4GB of storage and a 1,300mAh battery that should prove adequate for this pocket-sized affair. The company's certainly wary of how this slight fella might be perceived, so it's gone above and beyond the call of PR duty (see below) to make sure the world knows this is a phone for first-timers...

Sprint's Palm C40: the Pre 2 that never made it
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesPalmPre 2
Take a look through the trousers of time at what might have been; a Palm Pre 2 on Sprint. WebOSNation managed to grab the very rare prototype from a Palm employee and it fortunately worked on the Now Network without the need for any screwdrivers or warranty busting. Despite its second-hand status, the phone cheerfully handled webOS 2.2.4, albeit without a licensed webOS Doctor. Aside from the swap to a CDMA radio, the rest of phone hardware chimes with the Verizon version that did arrive. A handful of bloatware Sprint apps are on the device, including a ringtone store -- how quaint! Take a closer look at the source below.

Samsung gets new CEO, also tipping $1.9b into new chip line
Like UnlikeFiled in: Samsung
In a surprise announcement, Samsung has replaced its current CEO Choi Gee-sung with Vice-chairman and components chief Kwon Oh-hyun. According to Reuters, Gee-sung has been shuffled into a new role focusing on ‘future growth engines’ at Samsung’s Group Corporate Strategy Office, while Oh-hyun will now also be in charge of ‘corporate-wide affairs.’ The timing is somewhat unusual given that Choi Gee-sung was only recently in the US representing Samsung for the failed mediation talks with Apple CEO Tim Cook in relation to its ongoing legal battle with Apple.
Perhaps trying to deflect the attention away from its leadership reshuffle, the South Korean technology giant also announced that it will ...

Verizon tells the FCC it still needs AWS spectrum for LTE
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
Verizon is making a case to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in hopes of getting the FCC to approve Verizon’s purchasing of 20-30 MHz-worth of AWS spectrum to build out its LTE network. In a statement to the FCC, Verizon stated that refarming its PCS spectrum would not give it the capacity it needs to handle the growth of traffic on its LTE network. Verizon does plan to refarm the PCS spectrum to LTE anyway, but sees this as a bolstering of, and not a supplement for its plans for the AWS spectrum.
Verizon goes on to suggest that unless the FCC gives them the rubber stamp of approval on the AWS spectrum purchase, they will face network constraints in some areas as early as next yea...
