A new study claims that hackers have moved their attention away from PCs and web sites to new targets: mobile devices, smartphones and tablets. This intrusion of personal information moved to mobile devices because of the explosive growth these unique electronics have garnered in the past couple of years, according to a new report from Juniper Networks.
People are gravitating more and more to these handheld devices because these are becoming the daily driver for how folks conduct their business, including banking and shopping). In Juniper’s report, malware almost tripled with nearly 28,500 samples compared to 11,000 in 2010. That’s a huge spike in attacks. Moreover, Android captured 46 perce...

$699 will get you the 7.2 channel NR616 network receiver, complete with THX Select2 Plus certification, streaming from MP3tunes and Spotify and Qdeo video processing that scales video up to 4K if you have a compatible display. The NR515 ($599) offers many of the same features but drops things like a third zon...

Once Path issued an apology for violating users’ privacy by sending their address book information to its servers, people turned to and blamed Apple for even allowing this to happen. Apple has finally publicly responded by saying apps will soon require users’ permission to access contact data.
“Apps that collect or transmit a user’s contact data without their prior permission are in violation of our guidelines,” Apple representative Tom Neumayr told AllThingsD. “We’re working to make this even better for our customers, and as we have done with location services, any app wishing to access contact data will require explicit user approval in a future software release.”

Initial findings suggest Foxconn plant conditions are above average

Initial findings suggest Foxconn plant conditions are above average

Initial reports on the working conditions at Chinese manufacturing plants that produce Apple iPads and iPhones suggest they are much better than those at other facilities across the country. Auret van Heerden, president of the Fair Labor Association, noted that Foxconn facilities were first-class with physical conditions way above average, according to a new report from Reuters.
During recent trips to Foxconn plants over the past several days, van Heerden said that based on how tranquil the facilities are, boredom and alienation are perhaps a bigger problem than intensity and burnout from a pressure-cooker environment like those typically found in garment factories.

If you thought we were done with the numbers game, think again. NVIDIA has just pushed out its figures for Q4 of FY 2012 and things are looking good. Revenue for the quarter was $953 million, a 10.6 percent decline over Q3, but if you look over the entire year revenue increased 12.8 percent over fiscal 2011. Net income, too, was down compared to Q3, but looking annually, when compared to 2011 income more than doubled, from 253 million to 581. CEO Jen-Hsun Huang was predictably pleased with the outcome, saying: "We expect continued growth ahead, as Tegra 3 powers a new wave of quad-core super phones and Kepler, our next-generation GPU architecture, sets new standards in visual and parallel co...

Google Wallet prepaid service re-enabled after security fix

Google Wallet prepaid service re-enabled after security fix

Posted on Feb 16, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Last week, two exploits concerning Google Wallet left users questioning the service’s security. One of the exploits allowed hackers to bypass PIN protection, but it was only present on rooted devices. A second exploit, however, did not require a handset to be rooted, leaving all Google Wallet users exposed. The company maintained that the service was secure but as a precautionary measure it disabled its prepaid card services, but Google announced on Tuesday that it has patched Wallet and has fixed the vulnerability. Security firm zVelo, however, is not satisfied with Google’s efforts. While the Mountain View-based company has suggested that users with rooted handsets don’t use Google Wallet,...

HP CEO: We’re not done with WebOS yet

Posted on Feb 16, 2012 by MG1

At HP’s Global Partner Conference in Las Vegas, hardly a word was spoken on their WebOS efforts in 2011. And it’s not hard to see why: the few phones and single TouchPad tablet that sprang from the acquisition of Palm bombed so badly that the only wat to recoup losses was a massive fire sale. But surprisingly, HP’s new CEO Meg Whitman didn’t seem phased: at her keynote this morning, she reiterated HP’s commitment to the WebOS platform.
“What Apple is doing with iOS is great, but it’s a closed platform,” said Whitman, after highlighting the company’s decision in December to open source WebOS. “What Google is doing with Android is great, but with their acquisition of Motorola, I fear that it m...

32GB GSM Galaxy Nexus canceled, Google hopes you really like streaming

Posted on Feb 16, 2012 by MG1

This probably won't matter too much to our American readers, but the 32GB version of the GSM Galaxy Nexus has been canceled according to Expansys and Negri Electronics. Initially the latest Nexus device was supposed to be sold in both 32 and 16 gigabyte varieties. But, for whatever reason, the larger capacity model never made it to market. Now, word is that it may never happen. A couple of importers are saying they've been notified by Samsung that handset has been discontinued, which is particularly bad news since the Gnex (as the cool kids are calling it) doesn't have a microSD slot. We hope you like streaming all your media.
