Are Multi-Core Processors a Waste of Time for Android?

Are Multi-Core Processors a Waste of Time for Android?

Posted on Jun 12, 2012 by MG1

Many Android handsets feature incredible processing power these days, with multiple cores and high clock speeds seeming to offer incredibly smooth performance. According to Mike Bell, from Intel's Mobile and Communications Group, though, the specs might not be as impressive as they first appear.
Speaking with The Inquirer, Bell explains that Android software just isn't up to using multi-core processors efficiently—and that, as a result, they may even be detrimental to performance.

Facebook Picks Up The Mobile Development Team From Pieceable

Facebook Picks Up The Mobile Development Team From Pieceable

Posted on Jun 12, 2012 by MG1

How many mobile acquisitions and team hires can Facebook do in one month? Too many to count, apparently. There was mobile commerce startup Karma, then they hired the team from Android developer shop Lightbox.
Now the developers from Pieceable, which created an easy way for publishers to build their apps and preview them in a web browser, are joining Facebook. Note: Unlike Karma, this is not acquisition of the company or its technology. As Facebook has grown up and now has the ability to make big ticket acquisitions like the nearly $1 billion agreement to buy Instagram, the company has become more conservative in terms of what it considers an acquisition and what isn’t one.

Posted on Jun 12, 2012 by MG1

The Droid Incredible was announced earlier this year by Verizon Wireless without a solid launch date. Rumors point to a June 21st launch, but there has been no solid information supporting this estimated launch date until now. According to Droid-Life, select Verizon Wireless stores received marketing materials for the next generation Incredible handset over the weekend. This doesn’t confirm the launch date, but its timing would fit in perfectly with a mid-June launch.

Metro-style Hotmail turns up in leaked screenshots

Metro-style Hotmail turns up in leaked screenshots

Posted on Jun 11, 2012 by MG1

It certainly wouldn't come as much of a surprise that Microsoft would finally bring Hotmail into the Metro fold, but until now we haven't had much evidence that such a change was actually in the works. If a set of leaked screenshots obtained by WinFuture are any indication, however, it looks like the nearly sixteen-year-old email service could soon be getting one of its biggest redesigns to date. As you'd expect, it all looks very Metro, but also very unfinished, with a number of features reportedly still missing or not working properly. Of course, there's no indication when or if it'll actually roll out to the millions of Hotmail users (though the Windows 8 launch would provide a convenient...

New evidence of Flame malware 'suicide' code

New evidence of Flame malware 'suicide' code

Posted on Jun 11, 2012 by MG1

Security firm Symantec has witnessed Flame malware removing itself from infected machines, overwriting the information with random characters to cover its tracks. This process was discovered late last week on Symantec's "honeypot" computers, or machines that are purposely infected with malware for the purpose of monitoring and studying its behavior. Symantec's blog post on the finding says the instigating file is called "browse32.exe" and it uninstalls all traces of the malware — including this file — and replaces it with randomly generated characters, effectively blocking any attempt to investigate its presence. The so-called 'suicide' code was not successful at removing Flame from Symantec...

Ubuntu 12.10 Alpha 1 available now

Posted on Jun 11, 2012 by MG1

It has only been a few short weeks since Ubuntu 12.04 was released back in April, along side the LTS support. While I’m sure it still feels new to many we already have the next version. Development never stops in the Linux world and today they’ve made their next version, Ubuntu 12.10 alpha 1 available for download.
Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal is scheduled to launch in October, but you can get in on the few new features that are ready to go right now by downloading the alpha 1 build today. It’s been less than two months since the last stable version was released so not a whole lot has changed, but there are some notable differences. For starters Linux Kernel 3.4 has been incorporated into 12...

Intel says Android not ready for multiple-core processors

Intel says Android not ready for multiple-core processors

Posted on Jun 11, 2012 by MG1

There you are with your Android phone sporting a dual-core processor and you're wondering why sometimes the software isn't as snappy as you'd like it to be. According to testing conducted by Intel, not only is Android not ready for multiple-core processors, having more than one core could actually be harming Android performance.
Inet says that it wasn't until April 2011 when Android 2.3.4 became available that the OS was really ready to embrace dual-core processors. Before that, you had Android devices shipping with dual-core power that was not being taken advantage of by the OS. Mike Bell, GM of Intel’s Mobile and Communications Group, says that the thread-scheduler on Android is not ready ...

Google ousts Yandex to become default search option for Firefox 14 in Russia

Google ousts Yandex to become default search option for Firefox 14 in Russia

Posted on Jun 11, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Yandex may be the most popular search engine in Russia, but when Firefox 14 rolls out in the country Google will become the new default option for search. It's not clear why the decision was made, though Google and Mozilla did sign a three year revenue sharing agreement at the end of last year. Yandex currently enjoys an estimated 60 percent market share in Russia and became the default option for Firefox back in 2009. But while it's no longer number one, Yandex will be the second search option for Russian users, and as the company points out it will also be offering a customized version of Firefox with Yandex as the default. Yandex has also said that it doesn't believe the shift will impact...

T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 710 now available on Pre-Paid

Posted on Jun 11, 2012 by MG1

The Nokia Lumia 710 is now available on Pre-Paid on T-Mobile USA where it costs only $249.99 with $50 refill, bringing the actual cost down only to $199. The handset is also available in store on Bestbuy where it is retailing for $299.
The handset appears to be the best specced from the Pre-Paid devices in the price range, with most offering 3 megapixel cameras, WVGA screens and Android 2.3, and some even running 600 Mhz processors, which we all know is buttery smooth on Android.
Nokia has the logistic scale to be able to compete in the low-end and still make money, so hopefully their handsets will get the recognition they deserve for the great value for money they deliver.

Dropbox confirms Galaxy S III on AT&T and Verizon won't include 50GB storage

Dropbox confirms Galaxy S III on AT&T and Verizon won't include 50GB storage

Posted on Jun 11, 2012 by MG1

If that extra Dropbox storage helped swing the Galaxy S III pendulum in your favor, and you're a customer of AT&T or Verizon, it's not good news. Droid Life reports that one such expectant customer was asking Dropbox, via its forums, where their storage was. The cloud-space provider informed them that not all carriers are offering the deal, with those two big hitters being among them. This is further confirmed elsewhere on its support pages (check the source). So, just as we thought operators were loosening their grip, it seems some old habits don't die so easily.

CERN admits faulty kit to blame for speedy neutrinos, says it's all relative

CERN admits faulty kit to blame for speedy neutrinos, says it's all relative

Posted on Jun 11, 2012 by MG1

Those pesky neutrinos, they sure did cause a kerfuffle. The scientific community held its collective breath when research published by CERN suggested that the little guys had been caught traveling at an Einstein-defying 3.7 miles per second faster than light. Naturally there was a mixture of doubt and excited disbelief, but everything needed to be triple checked before any paradigms could meet any windows. And alas, it was all to unravel once flaws were identified. CERN has finally admitted faulty kit was to blame, with it's research director Sergio Bertolucci conceding "A coherent picture has emerged with both previous and new data pointing to a neutrino velocity consistent with the speed o...

Misery loves company, though that probably won't come as much consolation to social networking site LinkedIn, which is now joined by at least two other sites that suffered a serious security breach at the hands of the same band of hackers. Both Last.fm and eHarmony issued separate statements confirming that some user passwords may have been compromised in the recent hacker attack.
"After investigating reports of compromised passwords, we have found that a small fraction of our user base has been affected," eHarmony stated in a blog post.
