Windows 8 to bring better language support, finally including English
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
In addition to better file management, accessibility and that all important new logo, Redmond's engineers are also promising improved language support in Windows 8. So far, Microsoft admits it's seen this as a "local-market feature," putting the onus on non-English users to track down special copies of the OS or language packs online. But the new OS will bring a friendlier philosophy, in which multilingual support is regarded as a "feature for everyone everywhere" and the Control Panel becomes a "one-stop place" to find and install any of 109 different idioms. These will include 13 new interface packs, allowing commonly used Windows features to be displayed in Scottish Gaelic, Punjabi, Uyghu...

Microsoft files antitrust complaint against Motorola
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftMotorola
Microsoft has joined Apple in filing an antitrust complaint against Motorola Mobility, claiming the company is trying to use online video standards patents as a weapon, and that new owner Google is doing nothing to stop it. According to Microsoft’s Deputy General Counsel, Dave Heiner, Motorola is demanding the company yank Windows PCs, Xbox 360 consoles and more from store shelves in North America and Europe, “or else remove their standards-based ability to play video and connect wirelessly.” That, Heiner argues, is antitrust behavior, and he shows Microsoft’s sums to prove it: Motorola apparently wants 1,125x the rate in royalty payments as other patent holders.

Apple to build new data center in Oregon
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple confirmed on Tuesday that it plans to build a second data center in Prineville, Oregon. The Cupertino-based company will build the server farm on a 160-acre piece of land it purchased for $5.6 million, reports KTVZ News. “We purchased the land and it’s for a data center,” Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet said. The new facility will be very close to a data center Facebook opened last year. Crook County Judge Mike McCabe revealed that the social networking site “kind of helped recruit” Apple to Crook County and allowed the company’s representatives to tour its facility last summer. On Monday, Apple revealed its data center located in North Carolina was awarded LEED Platinum certification...

Twitter updated for iOS and Android
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleGoogleAndroidiOS 4iOS 5
witter would be happier if you used their official app, and to make their case more compelling they have released updates to their iOS and Android apps. Both versions have enabled swipe shortcuts (or “re-enabled”, as the case may be), and added an explicit confirmation dialog that makes sure you know that using the “Find Friends” feature means Twitter will be accessing your contact data.
The privacy issue likely arises from changes Apple made to their App Store policies after popular iOS app Path was found to be lifting users contact data without permission (something that was possible, and not unique to Path, until recently). The Android version of the app already asked for permission when ...

T-Mobile has filed a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission urging the committee to block the proposed acquisition of spectrum holdings from cable companies by Verizon Wireless. Foxconn accused of hiding underage factory workers before FLA inspection
Like UnlikeFiled in: Foxconn
Foxconn workers claim the manufacturer transferred underage employees to other departments or did not schedule them to work overtime in an effort to avoid discovery during the Fair Labor Association’s investigation of its facilities, reports AppleInsider. Students & Scholars Against Corporate Misbehavior (SACOM) project officer Debby Sze Wan Chan was told by two Foxconn employees that the manufacturer “prepared for the inspection” by hiding the child laborers. “All underage workers, between 16-17 years old, were not assigned any overtime work and some of them were even sent to other departments,” Chan reportedly said. Another Foxconn worker said she had recently been allowed three breaks a d...

Wi-Fi Certified Passpoint standard to provide automatic hotspot login
Like UnlikeWith all the commotion being made over LTE these days, it's easy to forget Wi-Fi. While it theoretically saves battery life, speeds up downloads, and eases network congestion, it's often too much of a hassle to find an access point and log in — especially when you're on the move. The Wi-Fi Certified Passpoint standard is aiming to solve that, giving users the ability to hop on networks automatically when they're in range, without having to deal with the browser log-in windows. Devices can become certified through a variety of methods, either through software permissions or hardware such as SIM cards. Once certified, the devices will support WPA2 security and roaming agreements between provid...

Sapphire Unveils AMD E450-Powered Edge-HD3 Mini PC
Like UnlikeFiled in: Desktop ComputersSapphireEDGE-HD3
Not too long ago, Sapphire rolled out the diminutive Edge-HD Mini PC, which was hailed as the teeny-tiniest PC in all the land. (The company also oddly claimed the PC's "less than half a liter in volume!" You know, in case you wanted to fill it with Kool-Aid or something.) Despite its small size, the Atom-based Edge-HD packed a decent punch and racked up a lot of fans. Now, Sapphire's pulled the curtain off the Mini PC's follow-up. The aptly named Edge-HD3 ditches Intel for a 1.6GHz AMD E450 APU that gives the PC a performance boost over its predecessors.
