Apple Inc., Made In America

Apple Inc., Made In America

There are two sayings on the back of every Apple product: Designed By Apple in California and Assembled in China. These statements attempt to say that even though the products might be assembled in a different country, Apple is an American company — a fact Apple proclaimed loudly today with a new web page titled Creating jobs through innovation.
Apple has been under fire lately regarding its overseas manufacturing partners. Apple hired the Fair Labor Association to conduct voluntary audits of the final assembly partners, including Foxconn’s massive Asian facilities. But consumers and activists alike aren’t buying it. It’s a smokescreen, they say. Foxconn will just hide the children and give ...

Chinese hackers seized control of NASA computers

Chinese hackers seized control of NASA computers

Posted on Mar 05, 2012 by MG1

Hackers targeted NASA computers, successfully gained access to employee credentials, and took control of systems at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, CNN reported on Friday. Paul K. Martin, the agency’s inspector general, cited one case in a report issued this week in which intruders from China-based IP addresses gained “full system access” to change or delete sensitive files and user accounts for “mission-critical” systems at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. “In other words, the attackers had full functional control over these networks,” Martin said. In an earlier attack, hackers stole credentials of roughly 150 NASA employees. The agency reported that it was targeted with 47 “advanced persis...

Android 6.0 = Key Lime Pie?

Android 6.0 = Key Lime Pie?

Posted on Mar 05, 2012 by MG1

Well, we all just received the obvious hint at MWC that Android 5 would be called Jelly Bean. While we really don’t know too much about the next release from Google, especially since it isn’t even expected to be released until the fall, there is already talk about Android 6’s codename.
The folks over at The Verge claim to have a reliable inside source at Google who states that Key Lime Pie will come after Jelly Bean. The Verge backs up this prediction by pointing out that this is the same person that tipped them about the Jelly Bean name last year.
Besides this tipster’s great track record, if we are to follows Google’s pattern of naming Android releases after a dessert in alphabetical order...

Huawei's capping off the good week it had at MWC by announcing that its 4G Wireless Network Card (E3276) and Mobile WiFi (E5776) will arrive in Europe and Asia Pacific by July 2012. Of course, only Germany, Poland, Norway, Sweden, Finland in Europe and Japan in Asia have fully working LTE networks. We're not so sure if the company's also committing to a launch window for its similarly enabled phones but it wouldn't be unreasonable to hope that we'll see those turn up around the same time. If you want more details, you should know where to go by now.

Siri might already speak in English, but if you want to really freak people out or just have some fun, why don’t you make your humble virtual iPhone assistand speak in accents? That’s what AnyVoice brings to you and it’s now available on Cydia, the iPhone’s jailbreak store.
You can download it by loading up ModMyi repository, which happens to be one of the default three in Cydia. Now, of course, you’d need to first jailbreak your handset in order to use download AnyVoice.
With over 40 accents to choose from you definitely won’t get bored. AnyVoice brings the good ol’ French accent in town or you can try and have fun with Siri speaking with Russian accent. Not all of them are equally good, an...

Cydia creator explains why the jailbreak app store often loads very slowly

Cydia creator explains why the jailbreak app store often loads very slowly

Posted on Mar 05, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

Those of you with jailbroken iPhones and iPads know well about Cydia - the unregulated by Apple third-party app catalog on iOS. It allows many of the apps you’d never see on the original App Store - tethering application, themes and others, but while Apple’s official store is pretty snappy, on Cydia you’re often forced to wait for quite a while. Jay Freeman, aka saurik, used reddit as the stage to explain why this is so and what’s happening so that it could change.
The biggest reason for the slowdown is the fact that Cydia loads its whole database with packages, which is megabytes of data every time, while the App Store only loads 25 apps at a time and offers a load more button for the rest.

Deja-Vu: Prototype HTC phone left at bar

Deja-Vu: Prototype HTC phone left at bar

Posted on Mar 02, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Cell PhonesHTC

Obviously there’s something about bars that lead us to discover new phones. Could it be that handset testers get drunk enough to forget that the device is supposed to be incognito? Whatever the case, first it was an iPhone, but now it’s a prototype HTC phone that was left in a bar and now found.
Droid-Life snatched this never-before-seen device up in San Francisco. It has that signature HTC look to it — metal case, large wide speaker at the very top, and front-facing camera positioned to the right — and seems similar to the Droid Incredible 2 more than anything else. Oddly though, it has a semi-transparent backing, allowing one to vaguely make out its internals. Hopefully that’s just part of...

Posted on Mar 02, 2012 by MG1

Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom on Thursday questioned his accusers’ motives while speaking to The Guardian. ”I’m no piracy king,” Dotcom told the paper. “I offered online storage and bandwidth to users and that’s it.” Dotcom was arrested in his New Zealand mansion on January 20th after his notorious Megaupload service was shuttered earlier that week as part of a multi-agency sting across several countries. He was released on bail and it currently awaiting trial, having been accused of money laundering, violating piracy laws and a number of other crimes. ”It’s kind of like weapon of mass destructions in Iraq, you know?” Dotcom said during an interview with The Guardian. “If you want to go afte...

AT&T relents on unlimited data throttling, increases cap to 3GB for HSPA+ and 5GB for LTE

Posted on Mar 02, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: AT&T

AT&T has announced today that it is retooling the throttling policy on its unlimited smartphone data plan, a legacy offering still in use by many customers — largely because it was long the standard-issue package sold alongside the iPhone. The new cap will be 3GB for customers on HSPA+ plans and 5GB for those on LTE, up from roughly 2GB regardless of network type. Once the cap is hit, throttling will kick in until the end of the billing cycle, the same policy as before.
The carrier has taken a significant amount of heat in recent weeks for stepping up enforcement of the data throttling policy — many subscribers had been reporting text messages telling them they were in the top five percent o...

A job notice on LinkedIn spotted by China Car Times now has the industry abuzz with speculation that Apple may be preparing to enter the iOS-automobile integration market, long an area where the company has enjoyed third-party success due to consumer demand. Third-party accessories for aftermarket integration along with the willingness of car companies to engineer custom solutions may have spurred Apple to consider direct involvement.
The listing shows the company seeking "Supplier Quality Engineer" with experience in die casting, stamping, plastic injection and other technologies involved in making custom components for car dashboards. While it is possible that Apple simply wants to hire so...
