Currently the tap-and-pay service, Google Wallet, is available on the Nexus S 4G on Sprint and the Galaxy Nexus. At Mobile World Congress this week, it was revealed that Sprint would offer NFC mobile payment support on at least 10 additional devices.
One of those devices is expected to be the LG Viper, which is anticipated to be available in the spring. Osama Bedier, vice president of Google Wallet and Payments, said that Google is still in talks with additional operators, manufacturers, banks, financial services, and POS vendors to expand Google Wallet’s footprint in the NFC mobile payment arena.

Google sued over Street View photo of peeing Frenchman

Filed in: Google

After nearly a week of intensive stories emanating from Barcelona and the 2012 MWC, we have a story that is strictly from the lighter side of the news desk. It seems that a man who wants to remain anonymous (and you will understand why shortly) was photographed by Google for the tech giant's Street View. Call it kismet, Instant Karma, a major coincidence or just plain old bad luck, but when the photographer pressed on the shutter, the image he got for Street View shows this anonymous Frenchman peeing on his courtyard on his own property.
Despite having his face blurred by Google, the man said that he became the "laughing stock" of the town and sued Google in an Algiers court. The man is seek...

iPad 3 launch may include 8GB low-cost iPad 2

Posted on Mar 02, 2012 by MG1

Apple may be introducing two iPad 3 models and one lower-cost 8GB version of the iPad 2 at next week’s event, according to Digitimes, citing sources in the company’s upstream supply chain. Although this seems like an odd move, the source claims that the cheaper iPad 2 model will help Apple cover different segments to defend against upcoming Windows 8 tablets.
There’s been plenty of speculation around the iPad 3 with the most prominent rumor being the use of a Retina Display-like screen with Full HD resolution of 2048 x 1536 or a pixel density of 264dpi. As a result, some reports claim that the next-gen iPad may be called the iPad HD instead of the iPad 3.

Google updates YouTube captioning

Google updates YouTube captioning

Filed in: Google

The leader in viral video sharing has been working on automatic transcription of videos for nearly six years, though until now it’s probably been used just as much as a tool of amusement as it has for people who legitimately need closed captioning. This week, Google made it easier for the video creators to add captions to their content at the point of submission.
As part of the update, YouTube now supports the following file formats – .SCC, .CAP, and EBU-STL. These are all standards that filmmakers use to add subtitles or captions to their videos, but until now they couldn’t easily be converted into a YouTube format. In addition to adding technical support on the back-end, Google has changed...

IBM this week laid off more than 1,200 workers in North America, and additional cuts are possible, according to an employee advocacy organization.
As of Wednesday, 1,202 IBM workers across multiple business units had been laid off, according to Alliance@IBM, which is keeping tally of the cuts as it receives severance documents from affected workers. The job cuts are mostly located in the U.S., with some in Canada, Bloomberg is reporting. Almost half of those who have been laid off work from home, according to a Computerworld report citing a union spokesman.

Filed in: Microsoft

Qualcomm Incorporated today announced that its Snapdragon processor will be joining Microsoft Corp.'s Windows on ARM developer seeding program. Qualcomm is working with Microsoft to provide test PCs to select developers in order to test and optimize apps for forthcoming Snapdragon-powered Windows on ARM PCs and tablets. This invitation-only program will combine a pre-release version of Windows on ARM with next-generation, high performance Snapdragon S4 test PCs. These test PCs are not representative of commercial form factors or the final Windows on ARM experience; they are designed to give developers early access to building and testing Windows Metro style apps on Qualcomm's latest technolo...

Dell U2412M - 16:10 IPS without Breaking the Bank

Posted on Mar 02, 2012 by MG1

For every monitor review that I’ve done for AnandTech so far, I know that as soon as I check the comments there will be a thread with the same theme: “I don’t care about 1080p monitors, I only want 16:10 aspect ratios!” When widescreen displays first came out for desktop LCD monitors, virtually every model was a 16:10 display. The 20” Dell I have on my own desk is 16:10, and almost every vendor made 16:10 panels.
As the price of flat panels dropped and HDTV adoption took over, more and more desktop panels migrated to the HDTV aspect ratio of 16:9. The reasons behind this were easy to understand, as you could produce more displays, reuse panels across PC and TV lines, and have a lower cost ac...

Sony Tablet P to go '4G' on AT&T this Saturday

Sony Tablet P to go '4G' on AT&T this Saturday

Posted on Mar 02, 2012 by MG1

The dual-screen Sony Tablet P will launch on the AT&T network on March 4th and bring the network's '4G' speeds to the device.
The unique, clam-shell tablet will cost $399, which isn't all that much of a discount, on a two-year contract, with expensive data plans on top of that.
Rather than full 4G LTE internet, users will only have access to the still-pretty-rapid HSPA+ download speeds available on the AT&T network.
Users will need to pay $35 a month for 3GB of mobile data or $50 a month for 5GB of downloads.

The Magnet Bay: file sharing site does away with .torrent files today

The Magnet Bay: file sharing site does away with .torrent files today

Posted on Mar 01, 2012 by MG1

Today is the big day — popular BitTorrent site The Pirate Bay is no longer hosting .torrent files, and moving entirely to magnet links. At least, sort of. According to TorrentFreak, the Bay is planning to keep torrents with 10 peers or less on the site for the time being, "in case someone who created a torrent has an outdated client that doesn't support magnets." With magnet links, users share not only bits and pieces of a file with their peers, but the actual torrent file that points new downloaders in the right direction. Files that are only shared by a few people with older BitTorrent clients require someone to make the torrents available to new users, because their clients don't know how...

Droid 2 Global update adds Google Security Patch, fixes minor issues

Posted on Mar 01, 2012 by MG1

A new software update has been released for the Droid 2 Global, which fixes a few small issues with the handset, and also adds a Google Security Patch. Once updated, users should no longer have issues with the phone turning on by itself or with it reseting randomly during music playback. The 19.4MB download also reduces "out of memory" errors, improves access to Gmail while Mobile Hotspot is on, allows you to save camera settings even after shutting down, and finally lets you download and use the ringtones you've purchased. The over-the-air update should be available to Droid 2 Global owners "soon" and brings the software to version 4.5.62.

Android Market devs get much more detail on app sales

Posted on Mar 01, 2012 by MG1

Google in mid-week overhauled the Android Market Developer Console to give app writers a much more powerful view of how their apps are performing. A new Android Statistics interface is faster, leaner, and includes timelines for virtually any relevant segment to show trends. It can now break down installs by individual devices, to show what hardware a developer should target next, and even unique users.
The upgrade can give a better view of how many are actively using an app versus its lifetime history. It can even identify which users are uninstalling and which ones are upgrading as new versions come out. Results can be exported to a basic comma-separated values (CSV) file to be parsed by Ex...
