ITC to review its decision on Microsoft, Motorola patent case
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftMotorola
Remember back in December when the International Trade Commission ruled on a Microsoft complaint from 2010 that Motorola's Android products infringed on seven of its patents, siding with Microsoft initially on one of them? Since that's so hard to forget, it probably comes as no surprise to hear that the ITC announced today it would review the decision in part, as Motorola noted in its press release at the time. Don't expect a final ruling for another month or so (we'd keep that NFL Draft window clear if we were you), but if you're looking for details, FOSSPatents has the notes on which segments are under review. Don't worry if you miss a step though, we'll be sure to let you know once it's a...

FCC denies Dish Network's waiver request for new LTE network
Like UnlikeDish Network has been running into interference from AT&T in its efforts to build a new LTE-Advanced network, and the FCC just dealt it another blow. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the FCC has denied Dish's request for a waiver that would have let it immediately offer cellphone service using spectrum it purchased last year. Instead, a review will be conducted to determine whether Dish's sliver of the 2GHz band is suited for such a network. The move comes after the FCC was forced to revoke a similar waiver granted to LightSquared, which had hoped to use spectrum in the same band to build out a new LTE network itself. Complaints over possible GPS interference led to an investigation...

Asus will launch a Windows Phone “when it is the right time”
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftASUSWindows Phone 7
Speaking to Pocket-lint, Asus said they were waiting for circumstances to be right to launch a Windows Phone.
"We are very close with Microsoft. When we think it is the right time of course we will do it," Benson Lin, the global head of Asus’ handheld division said at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
The company however remains focussed on Android handsets at present, but Lin was pretty familiar with Windows Phone.
"In my pocket, I always carry two competitor products. At the moment I have a HTC Titan and a Galaxy Nexus," he said.

Anonymous DDOS participants tricked into installing Zeus trojan, says Symantec
Like UnlikeThe hacker group Anonymous has been quite busy as of late, claiming responsibility for takedowns of the Department of Justice and numerous record label sites in support of file-sharing site Megaupload, as well as hacking emails and passwords of Syrian government officials. According to Symantec, however, participants in the group's DDOS attacks may have opened themselves up to being compromised. The security firm explains that on January 20th — the day Megaupload co-founder Kim Dotcom was arrested — links to the Slowloris DDOS tool were changed on a frequently-shared Anonymous how-to guide. A second guide was also posted to Pastebin with the same link, which led to a trojanized copy that ins...

Do Apple Employees Already Have iPads with iOS 6?
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsApple
Everyone's been digging through their web analytics looking for clues about the next iPad. But the rush to sift out details about new bits of hardware may have turned up Apple's next mobile operating system. Ars Technica claims that iPads running iOS 6 have been visiting its page, and the IP addresses locate them in Cupertino.
The iOS 6-using visitors are on top of visits from devices with a 2048x1536 resolution, which is the same as the rumored HD display attached to the next iPad. That said, user agents are easily spoofed by simple plugins for a number of browsers, so proceed with caution. Whatever the case, we probably won't see iOS 6 until later in the year, but if Ars is right, it's alr...

Apple could force Motorola to destroy phones
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleMotorola
Apple has won its patent case against Motorola in a German court relating to the 'overscroll bounce function in the photo gallery app', which appears on some of Motorola's smartphones and tablets.
The dispute is over the same patent Apple pulled Samsung up for last year, which resulted in Samsung releasing a software update changing the functionality of its menus.
What this means for Motorola is that it will have to update its mobile devices with a new software patch which removes the patented technology.

RIAA CEO says Google and Wikipedia 'misinformed' the public about SOPA, PIPA
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
The RIAA’s CEO Cary Sherman said that he hopes the Stop Online Piracy Act protest were a “one-time experience.” In an op-ed piece written in The New York Times earlier this month, Sherman accused companies such as Google and Wikipedia of exploiting their popular status to “misinform” the public. He also claimed that by opposing the bill, these companies “were supporting foreign criminals selling counterfeit pharmaceuticals to Americans.” In a separate interview, Sherman said he believes that “readers online” accepted misinformation being spread by Google and Wikipedia about SOPA and PIPA based on the assumption that “if it comes from these sources, it must be true.” He claimed members of Co...

Apple TV stock shortages appear, sources say new model imminent
Like UnlikeFiled in: Digital Media PlayersAppleTV 2gen
It looks like there may be a little more fact behind some of the Apple TV fiction we've been hearing over the past few days. According to sources (as well as Apple Store stock counters), the current Apple TV is becoming increasingly sparse at stores around the country, with most locations reporting no availability at all right now. More tellingly, at all of the stores where the device is out of stock, availability is listed as starting on or after March 7th — the day of Apple's big iPad event — which seems to suggest that something new is indeed coming. The device can be ordered online, and there are a few locations which show the current model in-stock, but that seems to be the exception, n...

Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom gives first interview since arrest
Like UnlikeIf you’ve been following the drama centering around Megaupload, the founder of the site, Kim Dotcom, has given his first interview since he was arrested over alleged copyright infringement. Dotcom is facing a litany of charges by the FBI in the US that include copyright infringement, money laundering, and racketeering. The man still maintains that he’s no piracy king, and that he will win in court. I can’t help but feel a win in court is unlikely.

Asus global head says that that they will focus on Windows Phone "when it is the right time"
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftASUSWindows Phone 7
Just looking over their current portfolio, there’s no arguing that Asus is carefully plotting its dominion in the Android space, and with many highly anticipated devices in the horizon, such as the multi-purpose Padfone, it’s abundantly evident that they’re building a solid army of Android devices to fight against the competition. However, we haven’t seen anything in regards to Windows Phone, well, except for a prototype unit that they concocted that ended up being only a preview handset to developers.
Interestingly enough, Asus’ global head of handheld divisions, Benson Lin, recently made it clear in an interview that they will go forward with a Windows Phone device of some sort when the ti...

Motorola XOOM 32GB Wi-Fi is on the cheap for today only at $299
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsMotorolaXOOM
Last time we heard about the Motorola XOOM, it wasn’t necessarily good news as Motorola was trying to track down improperly refurbished units that were eventually sold by Woot.com containing personal information from previous owners. Well, if you can somehow overcome that fear, you might take fancy in the fact that it’s selling for a mere $304.98 with shipping included.
Specifically, daily sales web site 1saleaday.com is offering the once beloved and first Honeycomb flavored tablet at the super low price point, but it’s worth mentioning that it’s a factory-refurbished unit. Yeah, we know what you’re thinking, especially after hearing about the fiasco from not too long ago. Nevertheless, it’s...

Lumia 900 will be $499.99 on Rogers with a Dark Knight surprise
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIALumia 900
While those in the U.S. patiently await the Nokia Lumia 900’s debut on AT&T, our neighbors to the north will be able to purchase the Windows Phone handset through Rogers. The question on everybody’s mind is, “How much?”
WPCentral received a picture of Roger’s inventory system revealing the price of the anticipated device. According the photo, it will retail for $499.99. Hopefully signing a 2-year commitment will reduce the consumer’s expense even further. Unfortunately, the release date is not specified in the image, but pre-orders just opened up so, hopefully it will be available really soon.

Malicious apps beware, Windows 8 will feature a 'kill switch'
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
“Kill switches” have become a standard part of most mobile operating systems. Apple, Amazon, Microsoft and Google each have the ability to remotely delete malicious applications from users’ devices without permission. With the launch Windows 8 later this year, millions of computers will receive similar functionality for the first time according to Bloomberg. Microsoft hasn’t spoken publicly about Windows 8′s inclusion of the feature, having only confirmed to Bloomberg that it will have the ability to remotely delete or update applications downloaded through the Windows 8 app store. Any software installed from a flash drive, DVD or through a Web browser will remain outside of Microsoft’s reac...
