Carpathia wants to delete orphaned Megaupload data, pay the bills

Carpathia wants to delete orphaned Megaupload data, pay the bills

Posted on Mar 26, 2012 by MG1

The Federal shut down of Megaupload did more than jail its founders, scare its competitors and worry its users -- it also left Carpathia Hosting footing a $9,000 a day bill. The outfit previously agreed to preserve Megaupload's frozen data, but now that the service's unpaid bills are piling up, it's ready to change its tune. In a emergency motion filed with the U.S. Federal Court in Virginia, Carpathia asked the court to either take the data off its hands, pay it for retaining the data or else allow it to delete the data altogether after allowing users to reclaim their files. The hosting service won't take action on its own, it says, as that might "risk a claim by a party with an interest in...

MSI GeForce GTX 680 offers easy Kepler overclocking

MSI GeForce GTX 680 offers easy Kepler overclocking

Posted on Mar 26, 2012 by MG1

MSI has revealed its GeForce GTX 680 card, using NVIDIA’s freshly announced Kepler 28nm GPU and pairing it with MSI’s own Afterburner overclocking tool for squeezing out extra performance. The MSI card sticks closely to the NVIDIA reference design – no bad thing given the early reviews - but ramps up the ease of tweaking the card’s default settings, so as to squeeze a little bit extra out.
The potential – not particularly capitalized on in the initial products – for driving Kepler further isn’t entirely unlocked by Afterburner, but the MSI-exclusive tool should at least go some way to making it easier. It supports GPU and Memory Clock offset and Power limit control, along with in-game video ...

ISPs tool up for son-of-SOPA anti-piracy cull

ISPs tool up for son-of-SOPA anti-piracy cull

Posted on Mar 26, 2012 by MG1

While the SOPA bill has been shelved, supporters are turning to internet providers to take measures against piracy instead. CNN reports that various North American ISPs like Comcast, Verizon, and Time Warner Cable, are set to introduce their own anti-piracy policies sooner rather than later.
ISPs are planning to implement a Copyright Alert System, what they believe to be a “gradual elevation” approach to piracy. If a user is caught downloading pirated material five or six times, the ISPs system would alert them to this, and potentially throttle internet speeds, or cut off the user’s access altogether until they contact the service provider.

WHQL-Certified GTX 680 Drivers Limit Sandy Bridge-E To PCI-E 2.0 Speeds

WHQL-Certified GTX 680 Drivers Limit Sandy Bridge-E To PCI-E 2.0 Speeds

Posted on Mar 26, 2012 by MG1

If you've dropped the dough on a spiffy new enthusiast-level Sandy Bridge-E processor, you may decide to drop a corresponding level of dough on a spiffy new enthusiast-level Nvidia HTX 680 graphics card. (If so, we salute your Maximum-ness.) There's just one little caveat you should be aware of, however; Nvidia's initial WHQL drivers for the GTX 680 nerfs data transfer levels to slower PCI-E 2.0 speeds, rather than the blazing fast enthusiast-level PCI-E 3.0 x16 speeds the X79 chipset is capable of.
Hopefully it's just a short-term bump in the road due to software validation issues rather than a long-term hassle. Nvidia owns up to the slowed speeds on its specification page for the graphics ...

Megaupload Copyright suits begin with ValCom for $42m

Posted on Mar 26, 2012 by MG1

As the saga between Megaupload and the United States government continues, lawsuits are destined to come down strong from creators and copyright holders associated with the filesharing sites found distribution selection. The amount of cash that the group ValCom, Inc. is seeking is just part of the massive half-billion in copyright losses and $175 million in proceeds total the U.S. government has already calculated. ValCom’s $42 million in suspected criminal proceeds have been seized in Megaupload.com and related entities raids thus far.

Ex-Google workers embark on mission to stop Google from tracking users

Posted on Mar 26, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Google

“Don’t be evil” is an unofficial motto first uttered by a Google executive during a meeting years ago, and while it started as a playful slogan Google used to jab at its rivals, the three little words have come back to haunt the company on countless occasions. The press and users alike often resurrect the credo when discussing the company’s mission to collect as much information about its users as possible, thus allowing it to target advertising more effectively for its clients. Not all Googlers are on board with this mission, however. In an effort to help users protect their privacy, two former Google employees have created a company with the aim of stopping Google and other sites from trac...

Nokia Lumia 900 on AT&T to support Visual Voicemail, but other Windows Phone users may not get it

Posted on Mar 26, 2012 by MG1

As we fully expected, the comments on our recent post about AT&T's apparent decision to not push out the lastest bugfix version of Windows Phone, 8107, have expressed a good deal of unhappiness. However, one comment in particular caught our eye, from scrapplejoe, which points out a thread at neogaf suggesting Visual Voicemail is present on the Lumia 900. In fact, there's an even deeper backstory involving a method of forced updating and clever data plan switching first discovered at xda-developers, with which it's possible to get Visual Voicemail working on a Nokia Lumia 800, Focus Flash, or even other devices on AT&T. The trick primarily requires two things: enabling a 4G LTE plan on AT&T (...

Courts Give Kim Dotcom and Family $60K Monthly for Expenses

Courts Give Kim Dotcom and Family $60K Monthly for Expenses

Posted on Mar 26, 2012 by MG1

I don't know where you live, but in my area, $60,000 is a very nice yearly income. In the world of Megaupload CEO Kim Dotcom $60,000 is what he needs to get by for a month. Courts have agreed to give Dotcom $60,000 each month to cover expenses. The judge said that $20,000 of that monthly income would come from interest drawn on $10 million worth of government bonds.
The second $40,000 monthly payment will come from a bank account Dotcom owns that was seized when he was arrested that has about $300,000 sitting in it. The courts also allowed Dotcom access to a 2011 Mercedes-Benz that he owns. It's hard to imagine needing $60,000 each month just to get by, the rent on the mansion where Dotcom w...

Chrome OS coming to ARM?

Chrome OS coming to ARM?

Posted on Mar 26, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Many moons ago, Google made it quite clear we wouldn't be seeing its browser-based OS on any tablets or phones, but it never said Chrome OS wouldn't run on devices powered by similar silicon. In fact, the issues tracker at the Chromium OS project shows that work's being done to get Chrome OS compatible with ARM architecture, and in particular a Samsung Exynos 5250 chip. That Sammy silicon appears to be inside a new bit of hardware, codenamed "Daisy," but deeper digging failed to provide further details about the mystery device. While it certainly seems like Google's working on a new ARM-powered gadget, it's important to note that the Chromium project functions largely via user contributions,...

Motorola doing soak test for the Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi; update is coming

Motorola doing soak test for the Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi; update is coming

Posted on Mar 26, 2012 by MG1

If you have a Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi, Motorola would like you to participate in a soak test. This beta test would allow you to check out the next software update before everyone else, just to make sure that everything is running fine after the software is installed. Because the tablet already received the Ice Cream Sandwich update this past January, we could be looking at Android 4.04 or Android 4.05. Don't expect more than just a few bug fixes and some enhancements here and there.
Motorola has sent out an email to those it is asking to join. You do have to be a member of the Motorola Feedback Network to receive these requests. And your reward is just that feeling that you did something good fo...

Did the HTC One V just pass through the FCC?

Did the HTC One V just pass through the FCC?

Posted on Mar 26, 2012 by MG1

A mysterious HTC device just passed through the FCC, and it isn't clear exactly what the device is. There are only a few clues, but it looks like it could be the budget option of HTC's new One series of Android phones, the HTC One V.
The device that passed through the FCC was labeled as model PK76110, which hasn't been fully linked to any specific HTC device as yet. Luckily, HTC doesn't have a very large number of devices slated for release any time soon, so it seems likely that this is a member of the HTC One lineup of Android smartphones. The dimensions of the device in the filing and the radio bands (850MHz & 1900MHz) make it look like it may be the HTC One V.
