Verizon Wireless and Motorola have released the so much needed Gingerbread update for the Droid X2. Before you “push the button,” make sure your most important data (i.e. contacts and calendars) is backed up and that your battery is fully charged. If that’s on place, you’re ready to go. Here’s the list of improvements the new firmware version brings:
Download Manager App – New App to manage all of your downloads from web browsing, email attachments and other apps.
Multi-Touch Key-Chording – New ability to enter numbers and symbols with keyboard shortcut combos, instead of having to change to the numeric keyboard mode.
Improved Word Selection and Copy Functionality – New capability to select ...

UK: Samsung Galaxy Tab Android 2.3 updates rolling out as we speak

UK: Samsung Galaxy Tab Android 2.3 updates rolling out as we speak

Posted on Jul 28, 2011 by MG1

As expected, Samsung has started rolling out Android 2.3 Gingerbread updates for the Galaxy Tab in the UK. We’re not sure whether everyone can get it at the moment, but as far as we know, it requires Samsung’s Kies software for the update process to take place. That said, it’s safe to bet over-the-air updates will follow shortly.
You’re most likely already familiar with all the software changes included in Gingerbread; they are worth repeating, nonetheless. Among the things you should expect are improved power management capabilities, better Copy/Paste, support for SIP-based VoIP calls, downloads management and so on.
As usual, we advise you to backup your most important information like con...

T-Mobile G2 owners have been waiting months for this day to come, as the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the smartphone has begun rolling out to customers.

Users can expect to see improved copy and paste features, a better on-screen keyboard, a refreshed user interface, and improvements to Wi-Fi calling.

Google Offers is Google's answer to Groupon, Facebook Deals, Yelp Deals, and Foursquare Specials, LivingSocial, and any other e-coupon services that you can think of. It began life in Portland, Oregon, then spread out to the San Francisco Bay area, and New York City area, but those are still the only places you can find and use Google Offers. But, regardless of where you live, if you've got the Google Shopper app for iPhone, you now have Offers in your pocket.

Android tablet population estimated at 1.2 million

Android tablet population estimated at 1.2 million

Posted on Jul 27, 2011 by MG1

While nobody would argue that Android smartphones are abundant these days, the situation with tablets running Google's mobile platform might not be so bright. According to an estimate given by the guys over at Daring Fireball, there may be as little as 1.17 million Android tablets currently in use worldwide.
Coming up with this number did not require any elaborate calculations. The estimate took into account some statistical data provided by the Android Market, which showed that between June 24 and July 1 of this year, only 0.9% of all devices that have accessed Google's software marketplace boast a screen size of 7 inches or above. Multiply that by the number of total Android devices out th...

AT&T Google Nexus S on sale today, exclusive to Best Buy

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

If you shelled out 600 clams for an unlocked Nexus S, buyer's remorse starts now: the subsidized AT&T version is out today. Available exclusively from Best Buy (and exclusively in black), the AT&T Nexus S will set you back only a paltry $99 with a two-year contract. Is the loss of color choice (and that whole "SIM-locked to AT&T" thing) worth the savings? We'll leave that up to you and your (Google) wallet.

Budget MSI Android 2.3 tablet floats through FCC

Budget MSI Android 2.3 tablet floats through FCC

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

MSI is readying its very low-cost Enjoy 10 Android 2.3 tablet for the US with an appearance in an FCC filing on Friday. Only labeled as MS-N0Y1 in the manual, the device has a 10-inch screen with a lower 480x800 resolution and a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 for a processor. The slate would have 512MB of RAM and lean on a full-size SD card slot for much of its storage.
Only Wi-Fi and Bluetooth provide wireless.
Very little is known about if or when the Enjoy 10 would ship to the US, and if so what it would cost. Such modest specs could keep the design at or under $300 given that even ASUS' Eee Pad Transformer costs $400. MSI also has an Enjoy 7 but hasn't indicated whether or not it would reach the US.

Unnamed Samsung Android slider headed for AT&T

Unnamed Samsung Android slider headed for AT&T

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

If Samsung’s Android lineup is feeling a little sparse on AT&T, don’t worry… there’s about to be a new flagship in town. We have just exclusively received a photo of an unnamed Samsung device complete with sliding QWERTY keyboard that’s headed to AT&T in the coming months. While we don’t have much to go on, the device will sport the four-button Android layout as opposed to Samsung’s typical three-button layout at AT&T’s request, and the QWERTY keyboard even reflects that.

All AT&T Android Phones Released In 2011 Will Get Gingerbread

All AT&T Android Phones Released In 2011 Will Get Gingerbread

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

The HTC Status might be a sort-of-weird, kind-of-gimmicky (with its dedicated Facebook button and all) little piece of kit, but it’s got at least one thing going for it: it’s the only phone on AT&T running on the latest (phone-friendly) version of Android: v2.3, or “Gingerbread”. Not for long, though.
AT&T has just confirmed that all of the Android phones they released in 2011 will be getting the Gingerbread upgrade treatment.
The phones AT&T confirmed:
HTC Inspire 4G
LG Phoenix
Motorola Atrix 4G
Pantech Crossover
Samsung Captivate
Samsung Infuse 4G
That sure looks like all of AT&T’s 2011 Android line up so far, to me. Anyone spot anything that’s missing?
For those of you whose pre-2011 AT&T...

Google buys firm that specializes in facial recognition

Google buys firm that specializes in facial recognition

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Google’s a company that can best be described as an engineer’s wet dream. It was founded by engineers, it’s run by engineers, and unless you’ve got hard data to support any of your statements during a meeting, you will be ignored. That being said, the stereotype of engineers being a bit … how should we put this, out of touch with both the formal and informal rules governing society, is definitely there when you look at some of the past decisions they’ve made around the areas of user privacy; just look at Google Buzz. The world breathed a collective sigh of relief about a month ago when former CEO Eric Schmidt said that despite the company having facial recognition technology in house, “it’s ...

Google Nexus S 4G to get data speed update on July 25

Google Nexus S 4G to get data speed update on July 25

Posted on Jul 25, 2011 by MG1

Sprint said Friday that it was rolling out a speed update for the Nexus S 4G. A patch will tackle complaints and improve speeds on the WiMAX network. The carrier said it had worked with both Google and Samsung to identify slowdown points.
The company claimed that the issue only affected a "small" number of customers, though the issues have been more widespread.
Other fixes bring improvement to how the Nexus S 4G handles Wi-Fi, boost audio quality, and add TTY (Teletype) support for those with poor hearing. Owners can start checking for the update on July 25 and, if they don't update manually, should get the patch automatically sometime within the next three weeks.

Motorola posts Atrix 4G's Android 2.3 upgrade, adds 1080p

Motorola posts Atrix 4G's Android 2.3 upgrade, adds 1080p

Posted on Jul 25, 2011 by MG1

Motorola gave Atrix 4G owners a treat at the end of the week by posting its Android 2.3 update. The update brings both the performance, polish, and interface updates of 2.3 itself as well as updates to Motorola's custom tweaks, including ones that haven't shown on other Motorola Android 2.3 revisions. Among the surprises is an upgrade to 1080p movie playback that helps it compete even with newer phones.
MotoBlur has been given both core and secondary updates. The UI layer now has an iPhone-style app dock, notifications can be cleared one at a time, and the app tray is now sortable. Media gets a lift through a gallery app that now aggregates more online and offline sources, and the music play...

Google+ circles 20 million users in just three weeks

Google+ circles 20 million users in just three weeks

Posted on Jul 25, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Facebook took over 3 years to achieve what Google+ has done in just 3 weeks - hit the 20 million users milestone.
The figure has been estimated by web analyst ComScore, a number that is double the 10 million figure stated by Google CEO Larry Page just a week ago.

Sure, Google+ is still 730 million users shy of Facebook's 750 million figure and sure, we're living in a much more social network powered world now than when Zuck and co launched The Facebook from their Harvard dorm room in February 2004 - but the growth for a platform still officially in a limited field trial stage is phenomenal nonetheless.
It's certainly impressed ComScore's vice president of industry analysis Andrew Lipsman. "...

Judge tells Oracle to rethink $2.6 billion claim against Google

Judge tells Oracle to rethink $2.6 billion claim against Google

Posted on Jul 25, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

The war between Google and Oracle is far from over, but the big G keeps racking up tiny victories in what are admittedly modest battles. Now the Redwood Shores-based company has been told to go back to the drawing board with its damages report. Originally Oracle sought $2.6 billion, but its theories were largely dismissed and Judge William Alsup suggested an alternative starting point of roughly $100 million. The company still has an opportunity to present a new report, one that will likely seek much more than the proposed $100 million, but things are looking increasingly tough for the claimant. It wasn't all good news for Goog, though. While the judge told Oracle to narrow its focus from An...
