Based on the estimated electricity use of Google's data centers published by Jon Koomey, Data Center Knowledge believes that Google currently runs about 900,000 servers to power its empire.
Google representatives apparently told Koomey, who publishes an influential annual data center power consumption report for the New York Times, that Google's data centers consumed less than 1 percent of the world's combined data center electricity consumption of about 198.8 billion kWh in 2010. Google's computers could be using somewhere in the neighborhood of 220 MW, which would point about 900,000 servers, Koomey believes. The researcher also noted that Google provisions about 50 MW of available power f...

Logitech Revue gets unofficial Honeycomb Android update

Logitech Revue gets unofficial Honeycomb Android update

Posted on Aug 02, 2011 by MG1

I’ve never been the sort that was willing to risk running one of my gadgets applying unofficial software and updates. I tend to make do with what OS my gear is running until the official update finally comes out. If you are the sort that likes to apply beta software and unofficial updates to your gadgets and use a Logitech Revue set-top box you may like the unofficial update.
The geeks at GTVHackers have built an unofficial Honeycomb Android OS upgrade specifically for the Revue. The upgrade can be downloaded right now. There is a catch though, the update could ruin your device and you might not be able to revert to the official OS. The update is a beta offering and is not ready for the gene...

Retailers Are Returning Google TVs Because the Apps Suck
First, let's state the obvious: Google TV has awesome potential for music fans, as well as anyone else with a clear motivation to use electronics.
This platform, available in a set-top box or built into televisions and Blu-ray players, could realize the dream of internet-capable electronics that has blistered like a raisin in the sun since the day when WebTV first awkwardly attached a mouse and a keyboard to the television.
Among countless other things, Google TV could let music fans play their tunes on the best speakers in the house, regardless of whether it's stored on their computers, in the cloud, or on the digital music service of...

HTC Desire gets updated to Gingerbread, but not really

HTC Desire gets updated to Gingerbread, but not really

Posted on Aug 02, 2011 by MG1

If you are among the bunch of people still holding on to their trusty HTC Desire, you might not like the news that we have to share with you. It looks like the smartphone will not be treated to Gingerbread after all, or at least not in the form of a full-fledged update that HTC was expected to release by the end of July.
Technically, an official Gingerbread ROM for the HTC Desire will be available for download, yet it will not be pushed out to the general public due to a number of issues that the HTC developer team simply couldn't hurdle. HTC stated on its Facebook page that “certain functions may no longer be usable after re-flashing the ROM, including but not limited to MMS and SMS”, but ...

HTC Desire Gingerbread update available, excludes US and comes with long list of caveats

Posted on Aug 01, 2011 by MG1

First off, if you own the North American variant of this handset then you're out of luck. Likewise, Japanese, South Korean and some German handsets are also excluded. Still here? Okay then, but you might not like what comes next. We already knew that either the Sense UI or some pre-installed apps would be cleared out to make room in the Gingerbread house, but now it seems the update is so unstable that HTC is only prepared to release it as a ROM via its developer site. That means a factory reset of your device, a bunch of worries about SMS and MMS not working properly, and a cold disclaimer in the event of things going wrong. Still, at least HTC gave (some of) us the choice. Visit the source...

SEO Firm Sells Google 'Plus Ones' for Profit

SEO Firm Sells Google 'Plus Ones' for Profit

A new search engine optimization firm called Plussems is offering package deals on Google +1 button clicks, The Atlantic reported this week.
The +1 button, which Google launched earlier this year, lets online users who hold a Google account vote up or give kudos to a site, search result, or online advertisement. Plus-oneing something likely affects search ranking results, although Google has been cagey about stating how the information is used or will be used in the future, once it has collected and analyzed data over time. Any Google account holder can click the +1 button at any time after signing in.
Plussems, which is owned by SEOShop.biz, is selling 50 clicks for $9.99, 250 clicks for $6...

Google Music Beta account holders get two invites each

Google Music Beta account holders get two invites each

If Google didn’t see fit to bless you with an invite to the launch of its Google Music Beta program you may have felt slighted. You may even know someone that got into the beta round and been more than a little jealous. I hope that jealousy didn’t turn into some sort of bitter feud though considering the announcement that Google has now made.
Each of the people that got into the launch of Google Music Beta now has two invites that they can bestow upon their besties. If you are one of those besties this may be one of your last chances to get in until the service leaves beta. If you managed to completely miss the launch of the service back in May, Google music is sort of a cloud storage place ...

Kyocera Echo Gingerbread update bringing WiFi calling, NFC support?

Kyocera Echo Gingerbread update bringing WiFi calling, NFC support?

Posted on Aug 01, 2011 by MG1

Um, okay? Hot on the heels of rumors that Kyocera's Echo would see its first major Android update on August 1st, in flies an updated page over at the company's own website detailing the impending changes. Unless someone at Kyocera's pulling a fast one, it looks as if the imminent Android 2.3.4 (Gingerbread) update will bring a downright staggering list of new features, making an already unique handset capable of even rarer feats. Interest piqued? We're told that the refresh will provide pinch-to-zoom support in the browser, gallery, Maps and Sprint Navigation, an improved downloads app and an upgrade to the Swype 3.0 virtual keypad, with Tap Correction and Horizontal Word Choice list.
But th...

Google web search to be optimized for tablets

Google web search to be optimized for tablets

Posted on Aug 01, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: TabletsGoogle

Google will be updating their web search page so that it’s formatted to be finger-friendly when visited from Android 3.1 tablets or iPad. The new optimizations should make life easier when viewing in either portrait or landscape orientation. Tabs for different types of searches will be easily accessible, and images in particular should have their thumbnails load more quickly, and have smoother scrolling action.
I’m of a split mind when it comes to web optimizations like this. On the one hand, it’s great that tablet browsers are getting a tailor-built experience. On the other hand, wasn’t the whole point of tablets to be just as good as a desktop browser when it came to this sort of simple st...

Google’s general counsel Kent Walker apparently doesn’t see eye to eye with the rest of his company. “The tech industry has a significant problem,” Walker said earlier this week. “Software patents are kind of gumming up the works of innovation.” According to SEO by the Sea however, Google purchased 1,030 patents from IBM just two weeks before Walker made those comments. According to the report, the patents purchased cover a wide rage of IP, “from the fabrication and architecture of memory and microprocessing chips, to other areas of computer architecture including servers and routers as well.” Still more patents cover specific database functions, various aspects of object-oriented programmin...

Google+ growth slows, stat firm says, as +1 SEO gamers surface

The Google+ honeymoon period may be drawing to a close, as record early growth reportedly tapers off and users make fewer, shorter visits to the new social network. Having seen a 238-percent rise in US visits in the week ended July 16, according to Experian Hitwise, Google+ saw US traffic fall around 3-percent the following week, Bloomberg reports. Meanwhile, sites offering “+1 for pay” rankings have already sprouted up, offering to help dastardly site owners game Google’s rating and promotion system.
Experian also claims that the average time users spend on Google+ has shrunk by around 10-percent, dropping to 5 minutes 15 seconds. In the week ended July 23, US visits totaled 1.79m the numbe...

Dan Gillmore, writer, teacher, and Google+ member has been in communication with Google over the past few weeks, asking questions about security and safety of information as it pertains to Google+. As he says in his own words, “I find Google’s responses (and non-responses) disappointing.” As you’ll see below, Google answered some key questions and uncovered a few rocks we’re sure you’ll be interested in seeing under. There’s also a list of questions they did not reply to, and assuming Gillmore actually DID send these questions in and Google DID decline to answer, the implications are immense.

Nielsen: Android accounts for 39 percent of smartphones in the US, Apple is the top device maker

Nielsen: Android accounts for 39 percent of smartphones in the US, Apple is the top device maker

Posted on Jul 29, 2011 by MG1

Nielsen's just released a study confirming what some other studies have already concluded -- that Android devices account for the single largest swath of smartphone users in the US, with 39 percent OS share as of the second quarter. That compares with 28 percent for iOS, although Apple still reigns as the country's top-selling device maker. Simply put, that's a reflection of the fact that Apple is the only outfit churning out iOS devices, whereas a bevy of companies led by HTC, Motorola, and Samsung have helped make Android the dominant OS in the states. And let's not forget about RIM, another hardware / software shop, which still commands a 20 percent chunk of the market. Rounding out the l...

Google Fiber puts boots on the ground, begins detail engineering in Kansas Cities

We've come a long way since Google first started taking about launching a fiber-based ISP -- from beta tests, to hopeful communities, to Topeka fools day, to selecting not one, but two Kansas Cities. Now, it's "boots on the ground," time according to the Google Fiber blog: detail engineering starts now. In the coming weeks, Kansas City residents (presumably on both sides of the Kansas / Missouri border) can expect to see El Goog's engineers measuring phone poles, gathering geographical data, and asking hard-hitting questions, like "What is your address?" All this footwork will help Google get a head start on building that sweet, ultra-high-speed gigabit network. Not the most glamorous bit of...
