LG Optimus 3D getting the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update in October
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsLGGoogleAndroid 2.3Optimus 3D
British version of the LG Optimus 3D won’t get the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update before October. We’ve no idea what’s wrong here since by that time Google may easily launch the latest version of Android – Ice Cream Sandwich. The good news, however, is that LG’s forthcoming update will also come with some special features, custom-made to take advantage of the 3D screen. As a result, once the Optimus 3D gets that new software, 2D to 3D conversion will be possible on the fly for applications and games as long as they [apps and games] are based on OpenGL. Kinda neat though I’m not sure that justifies waiting for October, especially when we know that the competing product (HTC Evo 3D) offers the...

Google purchases g.co domain for official Google site shortening
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Not content with the brevity of the goo.gl domain, Google has gone ahead and purchased the g.co domain to be used as the official URL shortener for Google sites.
The g.co domain will only be used for Google sites, unlike the goo.gl shortener that can be used for anything. Only Google will be able to create g.co shortcuts, and the shortcuts will always point to a Google site. Goo.gl will remain a public shortener that can be used by anyone for any site.
G.co will be offering shortcuts to Google's products and services in the near future.

Android 3.2 Hits Motorola Xoom, SDK Released
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsMotorolaGoogleXOOMAndroid 3.2
Android 3.2 Honeycomb has just been released and it includes a number of bug fixes and other upgrades to the tablet version of Google’s mobile software platform. Moreover, the release shows better support for multiple screen resolutions, which means manufacturers can just go nuts with their screen sizes, within reason. What we have to look forward to are 7-inch Android tablets, which are arguably more portable than their 10-inch counterparts.

CyanogenMod 7 hits 500,000 installs, eclipses previous milestone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Looks like another round of roman candles are in order. After already setting off the celebratory fireworks for its previous user install milestone, CyanogenMod 7's done it again -- this time reaching past the half a million mark. The highly customizable Android homebrew is arguably the biggest aftermarket OS in the ROM-flashing campus, and it has the numbers to back it up. According to the site's stats, the official release of 7.0.3 saw the biggest spike in handset installations -- at 76,897 -- with unofficial nightly builds almost doubling that figure. Sure, it sometimes seems like the rooting community is a vast, silent majority, but it's actually a wafer-thin slice of Google's mobile pie...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 3.2
And just like that, it's official. After hearing about the next incremental step in Honeycomb's journey by way of Huawei's MediaPad, we've seen breadcrumbs about its functional differences. Today, we're being given the full shebang -- Google has just made official v3.2, boosting the API level to 13 and releasing the SDK into the wild in one fell swoop. The new build brings along optimizations for a "wider range of tablets," as well as "compatibility zoom for fixed-sized apps," media sync from SD card (huzzah!) and an extended screen support API. Head on down to the links below for a closer look, and expect to see this rolling out to [insert your favorite Android tablet here] in due time.

Is Google Zapping Our Memory?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Last year, writers Nicholas Carr and Jamais Cascio made headlines with a debate in the Atlantic Monthly over whether Google made you stupid. While it was eventually determined that no, Google probably is not killing your brain cells, several psychology professors decided to conduct a more scientific experiment on the subject.
In examining peoples' Internet habits and how it affects their memory recall, the researchers found that while the Web is not exactly making you dumb, per se, people are less likely to work hard at remembering certain things if they know they can just look it up on the Internet. Meanwhile, when asked difficult questions, Web users are now more likely to think about how ...

Google Games discovered in Google+ code
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Some judicious digging through the Google+ code has revealed the Google Games logo, further evidence that the search giant is preparing an online social gaming system to rival Facebook’s. Flagged up by TechCrunch tipster Yvo Schaap, in addition to the logo – relatively uninspiring, but certainly in-keeping with the minimalist aesthetic at Google+ – there are also mentions of various gaming APIs yet to be implemented publicly.
These APIs include “/_/games/getGameFriends”, “/_/games/getActivities” and” /_/games/postToStream” which add up to suggest playing online games and challenges with people in your Google+ circles. The results of those matches can then apparently be pushed to your own new...

Chrome OS gets hacked via ScratchPad extension
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleChromium OS
In a preview of a demonstration at the upcoming Black Hat security conference, a security researcher has demonstrated how browser extensions can be used to compromise Chrome OS. WhiteHat Security specialist Matt Johansen reported spreading a note containing malicious code via the ScratchPad extension.
The Chrome extension ScratchPad has a wide range of permissions that made it vulnerable to a cross-site scripting attack, Matt Johansen, an application security specialist at WhiteHat Security, said July 14 in a preview of a presentation he will be making at Black Hat.
Johansen did his work on the Google CR-48 Beta laptop released last fall, but said malicious extensions would affect any device...

Women embracing Google+, too - it's not just a boys' club
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
The man who correctly predicted that Google+ has 10 million users, Paul Allen of Ancestry.com, is now coming out and saying that sites claiming the new social network has a 6 to 1 ratio of men to women are all wrong. In a recent post on his Google+ account, Allen says that he's been tracking the mix of men to women using his own data, which is based on a random sampling of surnames, and has come to the conclusion that the ratio currently sits at a much more female-friendly 2 to 1.

Google Q2 Financials Set New Revenue Record
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google had a bit of an off first quarter this year. It’s not like they lost billions of dollars, but the financial markets were a little unhappy with the numbers. The just announced Q2 results should make everyone forget all about that though. Google reports an astounding $9.03 billion in quarterly revenue. That’s a record for Google.
When compared to last year, Google’s revenue numbers were up 32%. Most of this increase was derived from the huge Google.com numbers. Google-owned sites generated $6.23 billion of the total revenue. While paid click numbers were up 18% year-over-year, they were down 2% from last quarter. Net cash flow amounted to $3.52 billion.
We have also learned that Google...

Today was a big day for Google as they excited shareholders with an awesome earnings call, boasting just over $9 billion in revenue this past quarter. They also revealed some fascinating numbers on the speed of adoption for their new Google+ social platform that already has 10 million users after opening its doors for just two weeks. And still there’s more auspicious figures for the company’s Android platform.
During the earnings call, Google CEO Larry Page mentioned that they are now activating about 550,000 Android devices each day. Just a little over two weeks ago, Google Senior VP and “father of Android,” Andy Rubin, tweeted that Android activations had reached 500,000. Back at Google I/...

Google soars $66 higher after hours thanks to earnings report
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Strong Android activations and higher ad rates helped Google report better than expected earnings for the second quarter. The company made $2.5 billion in the three month period compared with $1.84 billion earned in the same period last year, a 36% increase. That works out to profits of $7.68 per share vs. $5.71 a year ago. Google said that if not for costs covering employee stock, the figure would have been $8.74 per share which beat the average analyst estimate of $7.84 a share. Revenue set a record of $9 billion for the quarter. Thanks to the report, Google's stock soared over 12% higher for a gain of $66 to trade at $595.69 in after hours trading.
As we reported, Google's new CEO, Larry ...
