You’ll often hear from people that the iPhone is just better than Android because it’s more polished, beautiful and the app environment is better but the counter to that is that Android gives you more flexibility and power. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak still considers the iPhone the best but even he’ll admit that Google and its partners have surpassed Apple in many aspects.

Samsung has formally requested details of the contract between Apple and wireless supplier Qualcomm, the Korea Times reports. The action was taken through a US District Court in California, and is intended to discover whether a cross-licensing deal between Samsung and Qualcomm means that "Apple's buying Qualcomm chips is as good as paying for the patents." Depending on the exact arrangement, Apple may be immune to related patent infringement lawsuits from Samsung.

Apple seen selling 4.9 million Macs in holiday quarter

Posted on Jan 18, 2012 by MG3

Updated US sales estimates from the NPD Group hint that Apple sold about 4.9 million Macs worldwide during the December quarter, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Data is now in for all three months, showing US sales up 12 percent year-over-year. The 4.9 million figure is, however, a lowered forecast on Munster's part -- 300,000 units below a previous target, even if that would still mean global growth of 18 percent.

Apple files German lawsuit against Samsung, targets Galaxy S II, nine other smartphones

Posted on Jan 17, 2012 by MG15

With patent infringement accusations going every which way in recent months, we're certainly familiar with Apple/Samsung banter in the international arena. Now Apple has thrown yet another punch at the Korean smartphone maker, targeting its Galaxy S II, Galaxy S Plus and eight other handsets, claiming -- yes, you've got it -- patent infringement. The suit was filed in Dusseldorf Regional Court -- the same venue that the company used to target the Galaxy Tab 10.1N, which was created specifically to sidestep a September injunction, also in Germany. It's becoming rather difficult to keep track of all the IP hubbub across the pond, but we'll surely be back with more as soon as the German court h...

The video showing a clean reboot without a USB connection to the computer — aka, "untethered" — was made by Chronic Dev Team member DHowett, an illustrious iOS developer in his own right. Pod2g says "only a few to wait now" which is a good sign that an untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 is very near indeed, and about to join the untethered jailbreak released for A4 devices on December 27th.

Nissan creates the world's first self-healing iPhone case

Posted on Jan 17, 2012 by MG15

Although the concept of “self-healing” materials might sound like something out of a sci-fi movie, an iPhone 4S case with such properties already exists. And what might surprise you even more is that it is made by Nissan (yes, that Nissan). It is known as the Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case, and what gives it its magical properties is the same high-tech paint finish that the car manufacturer uses in some of its vehicles. The case, made out of ABS plastic, is covered with polyrotaxane-based paint, which helps it repair on its own and gives it a bit of extra grip too. According to Nissan, a small scratch will disappear in a matter of hours without the need for any user intervention. The comp...

Apple has rejected an iPad app that attempted to bring some of Microsoft’s Courier concept to the iOS slate, Taposé, though the team behind the software say it plans to appeal the decision. First shown back in April last year, Taposé uses a split-screen layout with a browser and other apps on one side and a digital notebook on the other. Unfortunately, it seems Apple wasn’t keen on the company’s use of multiple display windows.

iPhone 4S China launch turns violent after sales blocked

Posted on Jan 14, 2012 by MG1

Apple is no stranger to hype and excitement at the launch of a new iPhone, but celebrations soured in China this week as the iPhone 4S launch was frozen after violence broke out around stores. Customers – along with scalpers looking to sell off the smartphone at a markup, and the gangs of migrant workers they had employed to fill the line and bypass Apple’s limit on how many handsets each person could buy – had queued overnight outside the flagship Beijing Apple store, but grew restless after it failed to open at 7am local time. An announcement that the iPhone 4S sale would not be going ahead and that would-be buyers should go home prompted abuse toward Apple retail staff, while the store it...

Apple, a company known for its secrecy, has released a list of its official suppliers for the first time ever. Due to backlash from human rights groups, Apple created a supplier responsibility page on the company’s website. Previously, the page only featured labor and human rights, worker health and safety, environmental impact, and general ethics information. The company has updated the page, however, and it now now includes a list of more than 150 different companies that supply parts for Apple products. The move is part of Apple’s effort to address ongoing concerns surrounding the wages and working conditions in factories belonging to its suppliers. ”Apple prohibits practices that threate...
