OnLive Desktop turns your iPad into a cloud-based Windows 7 PC, and its free
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsMicrosoftAppleiPadWindows 7iPad 2
It was just recently when told you that OnLive is shifting its efforts from cloud gaming to cloud computing. However, the results from the company's work are already here. Introducing OnLive Desktop for the iPad – a cloud-based PC desktop environment that brings Windows 7 functionality to your iPad.
In a nutshell, it works just like OnLive's cloud gaming solutions. All of the processing happens on its servers while the user is given audio and video feedback, as well as control over the input, of course. Technically, it should feel like using a Windows 7 PC with productivity applications like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and will even let you store 2 gigs of data in your personal cloud.

Change the history books, John Sculley says he never fired Steve Jobs
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
The history books record Steve Jobs' departure from the company he co-founded as the result of being fired by the Apple Board of Directors on behalf of the man he brought in to run the company. Now, 26 years later, it looks like the history books will have to be re-written. Brought into Apple in 1983 by Steve Jobs, John Sculley had absolutely no background in running a tech company . Sculley was CEO of Pepsi at the time, and Apple's board felt that Jobs was too young to be CEO of his own company. Jobs got Sculley to jump ship by asking him, "Do you want to sell sugar water for the rest of your life or do you want to come with me and change the world?”
John Sculley was brought to Apple for tw...

iPhone 5 may run on all 3G and 4G networks (except WiMAX of course)
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Remember that Qualcomm chip that we told you about back in November? The one that had far better energy usage and seemed like a sure bet to be part of the iPhone 5? Well, it seems Morgan Stanley just noticed that chip was in the pipeline and has come out with a bold statement that it may be in the next iPhone.
Of course, while Morgan Stanley may be a bit late to the party on that piece of news, it did bring a bit of extra news to the table. We had already known that the chip by Qualcomm would be a world-band radio with compatibility with EV-DO Rev. A and B, HSPA+, dual-carrier HSPA+, and LTE, but what we didn't know is that it would be compatible with all frequencies of LTE.

Samsung plans tweaked Galaxy Tab 7.0N to skirt Apple patent complaints
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSamsungAppleGalaxy Tab 7.0 Plus
Samsung is reportedly planning to launch a tweaked version of its Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus tablet in Germany. The Galaxy Tab 7.0N will likely offer many of the same features of the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus but with design changes that could help it avoid litigation from Apple. Apple and Samsung have been butting heads in courtrooms around the globe and Apple last year successfully banned Samsung’s local subsidiaries from selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1. As a result, Samsung launched the Galaxy Tab 10.1N, which has also been the subject of ongoing patent litigation. The Galaxy Tab 7.0N is expected to cost about $770 without carrier subsidies.

Sony Music Unlimited bringing its own streaming flair to iOS soon
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsSonyAppleiOS 5
We heard back in December that Sony's fledgling Music Unlimited service would eventually be spreading its wings to cover even more operating systems, and here at CES 2012, we've learned that it's Apple's own iOS on the docket. Tim Schaaff, head of Sony Entertainment Network noted this week that the company will offer a gratis iPhone and iPad app for Music Unlimited "at some point this quarter." It's bruited that the iOS edition will offer offline caching for subscribers to its service (at least the premium ones), enabling 'em to save playlists for listening even when away from a network connection. Naturally, Sony's got some stiff competition in the world of iOS tunage, but it's hoping that ...

U.S. PC Shipments Down 6% in Q4 2011, Apple Up 21%
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksDesktop ComputersApple
It appears that PCs are just not the hot gift idea they once were. According to Gartner, U.S. PC shipments were down almost 6% in the fourth quarter of 2011. Apple, however, continues to grow its market share with sales up nearly 21% in the same time. This pushes Apple to the number 3 spot in the U.S. computer market. Still far in the lead are HP and Dell, which have 23% and 22% of the market respectively. Apple’s overall market share is 11%. Lenovo’s sales actually grew by 40%, but it sells so few units in America that it did not figure in the top tier of makers. Apple is the only manufacturer in the top five that grew at all. Apple’s good fortune can be accounted for partially by its retai...

Apple will hold an "education" event January 19 at the Guggenheim in NYC
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple is sending out invitations that it will hold an "education announcement" January 19 at the Guggenheim in NYC. Most rumors point to the unveiling of electronic textbooks, something Steve Jobs had been keen to do from the very beginning, and has reportedly worked on the project to his last days. The event is not expected to have any hardware announcement, but an iTunes University (iTunes U) project is expected to be detailed too, as part of the "education announcement". What will these rumored electronic textbooks and iTunes University announcements entail can only be guessed for now, but word on the street was that the projects have been in the making for years, and Apple moved this eve...

Apple iPad 3 on track for March shipments, thanks to the early Chinese New Year
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAppleiPad 3
The Japanese source for all things Apple Macotakara reports that thanks to the Chinese New Year coming earlier in 2012, Foxconn and Pegatron's iPad 3 production schedule has been sped up. The two Chinese manufacturers are rumored to split production 85% to 15%, respectively, just as they do with the iPhone 4S, but we've heard rumors that Apple is aiming to switch more of the iPad line production to Pegatron, leaving Foxconn focused on handsets, where most of its fat profit margins come from. The first iPad 3 batch would be ready in early March, and it will be the one with Sharp's panels, so the first buyers will get to taste what is shaping to be a long lasting relationship between Apple and...

Apple acquires flash memory company Anobit
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple confirmed it has acquired flash memory parts maker Anobit. The company is based in Israel and has been vital in making flash storage for devices such as the iPhone and iPad. The acquisition will help Apple in the long-run with its clear shift toward an all-flash future — flash storage, that is. As one familiar with Apple might expect, Steve Dowling, spokesperson for the company, wouldn’t go into detail about the plans or goals for the Anobit acquisition. “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans,” was the best Dowling offered.
According to a report from Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., Apple is the world’s largest NAND fl...

Kodak sues Apple, HTC over digital imaging patents
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleKODAKHTC
Kodak has announced that it’s suing Apple and HTC for infringing on four of its digital imaging patents. It also claims HTC to be infringing on a fifth image preview patent, which is already at the center of an ongoing case that Kodak has lodged against Apple and RIM. This latest suit was filed today with the US International Trade Commission and in a New York district court.
The lawsuit claims that Apple’s iPhone, iPad, and iPod as well as HTC’s smartphones and tablets use image transmission technology that infringe on Kodak’s patents, which it has already licensed to over 30 companies, including Samsung, LG, Motorola, and Nokia. It claims to have had numerous discussions with Apple and HTC...

Amazon launches iPad Kindle eBook store
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAppleAmazoniPadiPad 2
Amazon introduced a Kindle store optimized specifically for the iPad today. It’s not a native app available in the App Store, so don’t think Amazon gave into Apple’s strict in-app purchasing rules. Rather, the iPad-optimized Kindle store is accessible at amazon.com/iPadKindleStore. It only works when typed into Safari on iPad.
Once there, you are greeted with a horizontal list of book covers representing the editors’ picks. In the left column is all the main categories of eBooks as well as some of Amazon’s featured sections like New York Times Bestsellers, New & Noteworthy, and Kindle Singles. On the right, you’ll find the familiar Top 100 list of current bestselling books. For obvious reaso...

Apple chooses Pegatron to make iPad 3, March shipments
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAppleiPad 3
Pegatron Technology has reportedly received a small volume of orders for the upcoming iPad 3, which is set to launch in March, according to Digitimes. Apple has reportedly revamped the company’s outsourcing strategy and will have Pegatron focus on production of the iPad series, with Foxconn serving serving as an auxiliary in 2013. Foxconn‘s primary focus will be the iPhone, with Pegatron only producing a small number of smartphones. The new strategy is meant to decrease risk and increase the quality of products, according to the report. The Cupertino-based company has already visited Pegatron‘s plants in China several times. The publication also claimed that Pegatron is expected to see a “si...

Face Unlock app created for iOS
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
This is why we love developers. Face Unlock is a cool feature on Android 4.0 (though it does have debatable value because of security flaws), and we don't have to wait for Apple to implement its own solution because a Romanian developer has already built it.
Visually, the app is a wholesale ripoff of Face Unlock for Android, although the developer has claimed he built it from scratch. The app works just like Face Unlock for Android, although it is noticeably slower to react when scanning the user's face. And, just like in Android, it will bump you to a pattern unlock if it doesn't recognize your face.
