Apple iPhone 5 to have new casing and 4 inch screen
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
According to an unnamed source at Foxconn who spoke with 9to5Mac, production of the Apple iPhone 5 is gearing up. Various prototypes of the next-gen Apple iPhone have been circulating and they all have in common a design that would mean a larger 4 inch display for the model One of the prototypes' 4 inch screen was made by Korean based LG. The shape of the phone will not be tear-shaped as was the overwhelming expectations prior to the launch of the iPhone 4S. Samples have been symmetrical in shape besides being longer and wider. None of the prototypes has the form factor of the Apple iPhone 4/4S.
If you're wondering how reliable 9to5Mac's source is, this tipster was dead on last year in sayin...

Report: Apple mulling second Israeli facility after Anobit purchase
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
It looks like Apple's acquisition of Anobit was only one part of its Israel-based plans -- business daily Calcalist is claiming that the company will open a research center there by the end of February. It's unrelated to the purchase of the flash-chip maker, since Ed Frank was apparently despatched to scope out suitable bases for a new facility in early 2011. It's reportedly going to be based in the Matam Technology District, south of Haifa, adjacent to similar facilities operated by Microsoft, Intel and Philips. It's already received hundreds of resumes for engineers: it's looking for those with specific know-how in chip development, hardware testing and verification. The new complex is to ...

Apple sells record 1.4 million Apple TVs in Q4; 85 million users now on iCloud
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
During the company’s earnings call on Tuesday, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed that Apple TV is “doing extremely well.” The Cupertino-based company sold a record 1.4 million units in the December quarter, though Cook says the product is still just a hobby. “We still classify this as a hobby, but we continue to add things to it,” he said. “I couldn’t live without it. We think it’s a fantastic product and we continue to pull strings and see where we can take it.” Cook also revealed that the company’s iCloud service now has 85 million users. “We’re thrilled with iCloud and the response from customers has been incredible,” he said. “It was a fundamental shift, recognizing that people had numerous de...

Motorola files lawsuit against Apple citing patent infringements
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleMotorola
Motorola Mobility is suing Apple for infringing on six of its patents. The patents in question are related to wireless antennas, software, messaging, and data management — quite a bit of the entire experience of a smartphone is on the line here. Apple allegedly uses these patents in the iPhone 4S and iCloud.
The lawsuit was filed in Florida today and it’s just the latest battle in the larger smartphone patent wars.
“Apple’s infringing activities have caused and will continue to cause Motorola Mobility irreparable harm, for which it has no adequate remedy at law, unless Apple’s infringing activities are enjoined by this Court,” Motorola said as part of the case. The company wants compensation...

Apple Will Worry About iPad Competition When It Exists
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAppleiPadiPad 2
When asked today about how Apple was handling the competition from lower-priced tablets—specifically the Kindle Fire—Apple CEO Tim Cook said, effectively, that it isn't a competition at all. Which would sound like hubris, if the numbers didn't back him up so strongly.

Developers to choose Android over iOS in 2012

Findings from two separate studies have found that Apple's influence in the mobile market looks set to dwindle in the coming years.
Analyst house Ovum released results from its annual developer survey this week, which suggests that Android could become the most important operating system to developers this year, overtaking iOS's dominance.
The study also noted the growing support behind the Blackberry and Windows Phone platforms, which could see the mobile market become even more competitive, as developers explore opportunities across all systems.

I had the smallest storage version of the smartphone though and was never in danger of running out of space. Many people are now opting for the big storage version of the 4S according to the latest numbers from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners.

Apple announces Q1 earnings, sets quarterly record with $46.33 billion in revenue
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
It's that time folks: time for the quarterly running of the spreadsheets. Today Apple, one the most anticipated of all, is revealing its earnings for the past three months and let's just say things are lookin' pretty good for the Cupertino crew. The company set a new record for quarterly revenue and profit in Q1 of 2012, netting $46.33 billion in total with $13.06 billion earnings -- the latter number representing about half of the company's annual profit. That's nearly twice what Apple announced for the same (at the time record-setting) period last year -- $26.74 billion and $6 billion, respectively. In total the company shipped 15.4 million iPads, 15.4 million iPods and 5.2 million Macs th...

Tim Cook: “There Will Come A Day When The Tablet Market Is Larger Than The PC Market”
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
One of the big questions hanging over Apple this quarter was whether or not iPad sales would continue its rapid growth. Last quarter Amazon introduced the Kindle Fire at $200 (well below the iPAd’s entry-level $500 price) and there was concern that even Apple diehard fans might delay their purchase of a tablet until the iPad 3 comes out—rumored for later this year. But iPad sales came in well above expectations at 15.4 million units. It is now a $9.1 billion business. There have been a total of 55 million iPads sold since launch in 2010.

There’s no shortage of novel things you can strongarm Siri into doing for you these days, but sometimes it’s the little things that get me excited.

Dutch Court Denies Apple's Second Shot at a Galaxy Tab 10.1 Ban
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungApple
We've all been told, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again," but repeated attempts at the same result don't guarantee success. Apple, for example, tried to convince Dutch authorities to issue a preliminary injunction against Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 device on the alleged basis that it copies the look and feel of it's iPad, a notion that was rejected, appealed, and rejected again.
Foss Patents breaks down the ruling (available online in Dutch), explaining that the rationale in this latest decision is similar to the one that guided Judge Lucy Koh of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, who also denied Apple's request for a preliminary injunction (...

App Store developers have received $4 billion from Apple
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
In June 2010, after two years of the App Store being in operation, Apple announced it had paid out $1 billion to developers. By last summer, that number had more than doubled to $2.5 billion paid. By the time the Apple iPhone 4S had launched last October, the cumulative figure paid to developers had risen to $3 billion. To get to that figure, at that point Apple had sold 250 million iOS powered devices and 18 billion apps had been installed on the platform. The latest quarter has seen the Cupertino based firm cut a check to developers for $700,000 which brings the cumulative total to more than $4 billion.
