HTC just made the morning for many of its fans. You don't need to go to the cloud, the cloud can come to you, is HTC's logic for partnering with Dropbox, and they have good reasoning. Why spend on R&D, when there are numerous great cloud storage services out there you can just team up with?
The Taiwanese announced via Twitter that they will be pairing 5GB of free storage with each HTC Android device, which is a more generous offer than the usual 2GB Dropbox gives to the freeriding subscribers, and equals HTC with storage offerings like iCloud, for example. The HTC Windows Phones don't need this for obvious reasons, since they already come with the 25GB free storage of SkyDrive.

Applications downloaded to Android devices in the second quarter surpassed the number apps downloaded from Apple’s iOS App Store. Apple’s Siri system is one of the flagship features of the iPhone 4S, but a team of Android developers reckoned they could match the voice command system – or at least rival it – with just eight hours work. Dexetra came up with Iris for Android, a tongue-in-cheek reversal of the Siri name, and pulling together Android’s existing voice input and text-to-speech capabilities with some online search and a dash of arch humor.

AMD invests in BlueStacks for Android apps on Fusion slates

AMD has joined a $5.6m investment round in BlueStacks, the software specialist that enables Android apps to run on x86-based Windows computers. The investment, made with Citrix, will see AMD leverage BlueStacks virtualization with its tablet and notebook/netbook processors; BlueStacks intends to use the extra cash to accelerate development, with a beta and Pro version – capable of running paid Android apps – both expected by the end of 2011.

Walter Isaacson biography on Steve Jobs will go on sale from Monday, but Associated Press got a copy of it before us. They posted some excerpts from the book which says that Steve Jobs felt that Android is a stolen product and he is willing to wage a war on it.
“I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple’s $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong. I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a stolen product. I’m willing to go thermonuclear war on this.”
“I don’t want your money. If you offer me $5 billion, I won’t want it. I’ve got plenty of money. I want you to stop using our ideas in Android, that’s all I want.”

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is known for his sweaty on stage antics and for his comments about competitors’ products. Ballmer is back at it again and is blasting Android on usability and saying that consumers need to be a computer scientists to figure out how to use an Android phone. The off the wall comments by Ballmer came from the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco when the Microsoft CEO was asked to compare the appeal of a Windows Phone to an Android phone.

Google Translate for Android adds speech-to-speech translations in 14 languages

Google released an update today to its Google Translate app for Android that further knocks down language barriers. The Conversation Mode that was launched earlier this year allowed users to speak to the app and then have the app repeat what was said in the target language. However, this feature was only available for English and Spanish conversations. With this latest update, Google is expanding the speech-to-speech translation to 14 languages.

In recent months, Netflix has added streaming support for multiple Android-based devices, but the lag time between updates created an opening for scammers, who created a fake app intended to steal your personal information.
