CyanogenMod 9 Should Support Most CM7-Compatible Devices

In an update on the CyanogenMod blog today, Cyanogen gave us our first details on device support for the forthcoming Ice Cream Sandwich-based CyanogenMod 9: the first SoCs supported will be TI's OMAP 4, Qualcomm's MSM8660 and MSM7x30, and Samsung's Exynos. Support for NVIDIA's Tegra 2 tablets should also come early. As we reported previously, we should begin to see builds of CM9 for some devices as early as January.

Some Android phones fail to enforce permissions, exposed to unauthorized app access

Eight Android phones, including the Motorola Droid X and Samsung Epic 4G, were found to house major permission flaws according to a research team at North Carolina State University. Their study revealed untrusted applications could send SMS messages, record conversations and execute other potentially malicious actions without user consent. Eleven of the thirteen areas analyzed (includes geo-location and access to address books) showed privileges were exposed by pre-loaded applications. Android app can detect Carrier IQ on your phone

Carrier IQ is the new hotness when it comes to creepy tactics to get a hold of user data, but there is a new app for Android phones which will let you know whether or not the software is running on your device.
The app is courtesy of François Simond, a.k.a Supercurio, who put it together in just four hours. Unfortunately, the app will currently only detect whether or not Carrier IQ is on your device, but can't do anything about it. Good news for Android users in Europe — TomTom has released its Places app to the Market, allowing users to search for restaurants, hotels, tourist attractions, shops and more, and then get directions to these destinations within the same software. The iOS version of Places is available in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Portugal and Sweden, and the Market release brings TomTom’s "10 million place" POI database to Android owners in the same countries, with Spain to come in September. Time Warner Cable has made good on its promise to Android users — an app optimized for Honeycomb tablets is now available in the Android Market. While this app does offer a program guide and on-the-go DVR management, it is missing a major feature: there's no live TV streaming, unlike Time Warner's iPad app. Time Warner admitted this would be missing when it announced the app a few weeks ago, but it's still a letdown considering iPad owners have been able to stream live TV since March. If you have an LG Android smartphone, I suggest you download the Box app and sign up for a free account because LG and Box have teamed up to give users 50 GB of free cloud storage for life.
If you’re not familiar with Box, it provides a cloud storage solution that will let you share documents, music, media and files across multiple devices. It’s similar to Dropbox but Box is more focused on the enterprise side of things and it offers more robust business capabilities though.
It has done a similar free 50 GB move with webOS and iOS and I wondered why it would be running these promotions which wind up hitting consumers.

Wittily titled 3DMark for Android, it'll bring the industry-standard testing tools to all the phones in Google's yard. Vulnerabilities in pre-installed Android apps can leak your info

We’ve never really liked preinstalled apps on Android phones but now that North Carolina State University researchers have revealed a major flaw in some on-board Android apps, we hate it even more.
The researchers said these vulnerabilities can allow for the sharing of your potentially sensitive information without your permission. Malicious apps could tap into the functionality of pre-installed apps to send text messages or even completely erase all the contents of the handset. Either way, anything being done on your phone without permission should be an issue of serious concern.

Panasonic reaffirms plans to bring its Android phones outside of Japan

We’re pretty confident Panasonic wants to sell phones to everyone interested whether he/she lives in Japan or not. Android claims 40% of enterprise mobile web traffic

Internet security service provider, Zscaler, recently published some interesting usage data for the last quarter, including some insight into mobile browser usage. Although iOS may be winning device adoption over BlackBerry in businesses, it looks like the majority of Zscaler’s enterprise subscribers that browse the web on smartphones (40.3%) are doing so through an Android device, while BlackBerry claimed 37.26%, and iOS 22.38%. Zscaler further broke down those numbers into geographies; 75.34% of the Android users were from the U.S., followed up by Spain (5.48%), Israel (9.17%), and Singapore (2.76%). Security researcher receives a cease-and-desist for exposing tracking software in Android devices

Carrier IQ has come under fire recently for its software that is found on several Android devices, including those manufactured by Samsung and HTC. Reports have surfaced that its tracking software creates detailed logs of everything that occurs on the phone.
