Google updated its Google Voice client for Android smartphones on Tuesday with support for group texting. In addition, the client now supports the ability to prefetch voicemails so that you can listen to them when you’re outside data coverage. Google also says the app should now offer better notifications, although we didn’t notice any immediate difference in our preliminary tests. The update is free and is available in the Android Market now.

Google announces 200 million Android devices activated, 550,000 every day
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
These days companies can’t just hold an event to launch a new product; they also like to brag about numbers. And at tonight’s Google Music event Google had some pretty impressive numbers to reveal. According to Big G more than 200 million Android devices have been activated to date. That number includes both phones and tablets, but given the state of Android tablet sales numbers we have to assume that 195 million or so are smartphones.
Those of you with a good memory may recall that Google announced their first 100 million activations at Google I/O back in May, a mere 6 months ago. So you can imagine a heck of a lot of people have activated Android phones on a daily basis. Google has you cov...

Android Global: South Korea Second Only To U.S. In App Downloads
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Research firm research2guidance this morning published a report that offers key findings from an analysis of mobile app trends in the Android Market. The first point is perhaps not so surprising: Although we think of Android as having significant global reach as a mobile operating system, the U.S. remains (by far) the largest market for Android apps. According to the study, with over 3.49 billion total downloads as of September 2011 and with 50 percent of Android app downloads (to date) originating at home, the U.S. is dominating the Android app market.
However, the research firm is quick to point out that, although the U.S. leads, there is some saturation happening here, while other markets...

Google Voice for Android finally gets mass texting capabilities
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Sweet jumpin' Jehoshaphat, it finally happened -- Google Voice for Android now supports sending text messages to multiple recipients. Being able to have a single, archived repository of texts is great, but it was always somewhat bewildering that while you could send a mass SMS from the website you were stuck sending out individual missives on the app. Today's update, version 0.4.2.38, finally gives Voice the power to spam your contacts -- a pretty basic feature that even the lowliest of feature phones enjoys. So what are you waiting for, head over to the Market to get the update now. How else are you going to let all 300 of your closest acquaintances know the next time you're DJing during ha...

Netflix launches new tablet UI for Android; iPad version coming in a few weeks
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Netflix, compelled by the increasing number of Android tablets now flooding the market, announced a brand new user interface for tablets on Tuesday. The company explained that the revamped UI now displays twice as many movie and TV titles, with larger cover art, and that users can easily swipe through titles to find additional content. The changes are all welcome, since we found the old UI was a bit sluggish while searching for something to watch. “In the last 12 months we have seen a threefold increase in how long Netflix members are watching on their tablets,” Netflix chief product officer Neil Hunt said, noting the company wanted to introduce the redesigned UI in time for the expected inf...

Firefox 8 for Android released, brings security enhancements and more
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
If that stock internet browser on your Android smartphone does not live up to your expectations, you are probably using one of its numerous alternatives. But even if it seemingly gets the job done, it is always a good idea seeing what the substitutes are, as they often come loaded with goodies you may have never thought you'd use.
Firefox for Android, one of the most popular alternatives to that built-in web browser, has just been updated to version 8, which brings along a set of both minor and major improvements. A Master Password feature has been included in the app's latest release and lets you encrypt the usernames and passwords that the browser stores onto your device. Another new addit...

Barnes & Noble asked Justice Department to go after Microsoft in response to Android patent lawsuits
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftGoogleBarnes & NobleAndroid
Microsoft's strategy of demanding patent license fees from major Android device makers has been resoundingly successful in recent months, but that doesn't mean it's not controversial: the Wall Street Journal says Barnes & Noble has asked the Justice Department for an antitrust investigation into Redmond's attempts to "kill off" Android devices from smaller players with license fees and lawsuits. B&N told the government over the summer that "Microsoft's willingness to bully small players with expensive litigation raises a substantial barrier to entry" because only big companies can afford to pay the license fees. Unfortunately, we don't know how much Microsoft asks in fees, so we can't really...

Microsoft chasing down Huawei for Android patent license agreement
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftHuaweiGoogleAndroid
Microsoft is chasing down Huawei in search of a patent licensing agreement, The Guardian reported on Tuesday. “Yes, Microsoft has come to us,” Huawei Devices chief marketing officer Victor Xu told The Guardian. ”We always respect the intellectual property of companies. But we have 65,000 patents worldwide too. We have enough to protect our interests. We are a very important stakeholder in Android.” Xu also said that “negotiations are in progress” with Microsoft, which takes home an estimated $444 million annually from Android royalties. Microsoft has a cross-licensing agreement with Samsung and has similar deals with HTC, ViewSonic and other Android device vendors. It is expected that Micros...

Repairing those low-end Androids may cost carriers up to $2 billion
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsGoogleAndroid
WDS, a company which provides device management and call center services to carriers, has done a study of 600 000 tech support calls from its centers in Europe, North America, Africa and Australia, and found out that those cheap Android phones don't come as cheap in the end.
Android has been taking over the smartphone world for a while now, and a lot of its current 57% market share success is due to affordable handsets that cost as little as $100 or less to produce, and which many carriers are offering at the low-end of their smartphone portfolios.
These comprise both of handsets that aren't from a well-established brand, as well as phones from Samsung, LG or other household names. Tim Deluc...

GameStop testing sales of Android tablets in 200 stores
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that during this holiday season, retailer GameStop will put specialized Android tablets in 200 stores to see how well they sell. The tablets, made by Asus, Acer and Samsung, will each come with seven free games including EA's "Dead Space", and will be offered at the same price you would see at other stores. Although the tablets will support GameStop's new controller out of the box, it must be purchased separately at the store.
Last month, we reported that GameStop was planning on offering its own Android tablets to sell in its stores. Besides offering pre-installed games, console quality content would be streamed from the cloud using the controller. The i...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
t the Android Fever panel here at Disrupt Beijing, Wang Hua of Innovation Works, John Lagerling, Director of Android Global Partnerships at Google, and David Chao of DCM. These folks are bullish on Android, noting that there are currently 40 million android phones in country and that China is number three in terms of development kit downloads.
“The Android market in China is going through a chaotic phase,” said David Chao. He, like Hua and Lagerling, is betting that Android is going to win the day in China, especially in the lower end of the market.
“Nokia is dying much faster than we expected,” said Hua. In the lower-price space, Android is quickly replacing feature phones in the entry-leve...
