Spotify update looking to suck even more data on your iPhone

Spotify for iOS has gotten a pretty nice update which adds a new option for song streaming, although it could be pretty costly if you have a lot limit on your monthly data plan for your iPhone or iPad. The new option adds the "Extreme" song quality option, which will deliver songs to you at a very respectable 320kbps. Of course, it is likely recommended that you not use the new streaming option on mobile data, but the potential for misuse is there by adventurous users.

WebOS will have 'huge advantages' over iOS and Android

Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman says the company's soon-to-be open source WebOS software will eventually be better than both the Android and iOS platforms.
HP will launch the first version of the reimagined operating system in September this year after deciding to commit the storied software to the open source community.
Whitman said the result will prove to be superior to the 'closed' Apple iOS ecosystem and the undeniably 'fragmented' Android platform.
She also confirmed that the company will re-enter the tablet market, following the HP TouchPad debacle of 2011.

iOS apps crash more than Android apps, study shows

Apps running on Apple’s iOS devices crash more frequently than Android apps according to a new study preformed by mobile app monitoring company Crittercism. The data, which was collected between December 1st and 15th last year, spans 23 different versions of iOS and 33 different Android versions. The latest version of iOS (5.0.1) leads all others with 28.64% of all crashes, Forbes reports. The OS build is still relatively new, however, so much of the poor performance could be attributed to apps that haven’t yet been properly updated. Developers to choose Android over iOS in 2012

Findings from two separate studies have found that Apple's influence in the mobile market looks set to dwindle in the coming years.
Analyst house Ovum released results from its annual developer survey this week, which suggests that Android could become the most important operating system to developers this year, overtaking iOS's dominance.
The study also noted the growing support behind the Blackberry and Windows Phone platforms, which could see the mobile market become even more competitive, as developers explore opportunities across all systems.

Face Unlock app created for iOS

This is why we love developers. Face Unlock is a cool feature on Android 4.0 (though it does have debatable value because of security flaws), and we don't have to wait for Apple to implement its own solution because a Romanian developer has already built it.
Visually, the app is a wholesale ripoff of Face Unlock for Android, although the developer has claimed he built it from scratch. The app works just like Face Unlock for Android, although it is noticeably slower to react when scanning the user's face. And, just like in Android, it will bump you to a pattern unlock if it doesn't recognize your face.

Apple releases iOS 5.1 Beta 3 - Updates Baseband Again, 3G Toggle is Back

We've been tracking and updating our iPhone 4S' to each beta of iOS 5.1, and today Apple has pushed out an OTA version of iOS 5.1 Beta 3 (build 9B5141a). The update changes baseband firmware on the 4S to 1.5.04 (from 1.4.00 in iOS 5.1 Beta 2) and also reintroduces the 3G toggle on our AT&T iPhone 4S. This is a very welcome and timely change especially considering that AT&T WCDMA is almost unusable in Las Vegas, making EDGE sometimes the only way to stay connected.

Google has released an update for its Translate app for the iOS platform that brings support for the larger display of the Apple iPad. All of the features that users have come to enjoy on the iPhone and iPod touch can now be had on the iPad, including text translation between 63 languages, voice-to-text translation in 17 languages, and text-to-voice translation in 24 languages. The updated Google Translate app can be downloaded for free from the iTunes App Store now.
