Adobe updates Flash and Air for Android, fixes 'green screen' video issues

Adobe updates Flash and Air for Android, fixes 'green screen' video issues

Posted on Jan 18, 2012 by MG3

Even though Adobe is killing Flash for Android, the company promised to keep offering support and updates to its users. To that end, Adobe is rolling out updates for Flash 11 and Air for Android, as well as an update to the Air SDK. The biggest change would have to be the squashing of a bug that caused serious issues with Flash video playback — previously, users would often experience a completely green screen when trying to play video on sites like YouTube, pretty much defeating the value of having Flash installed in the first place. There's still a number of known issues unresolved, including frames not updating when seeking through a paused video and incoming call audio not being prioriti...

CyanogenMod reaches 1 million unique downloads

CyanogenMod reaches 1 million unique downloads

Posted on Jan 13, 2012 by MG1

As long as smartphone manufacturers keep slapping ugly skins on their Android handsets and then refusing to upgrade them to the latest version of the operating system, there's going to be a place in the world for custom Android ROMs. CyanogenMod is among the most popular, and this morning the developers involved announced that it has been downloaded by one million unique users. The rooting community is still a small sect of Android users, but it's a growing one, and with good reason — it's been reported to improve battery life and performance on nearly every phone it supports. It also removes carrier and manufacturer bloatware and skins, adds some unique and new features, and keeps Android u...

Update to Google Maps improves battery life, public transit options and more

Update to Google Maps improves battery life, public transit options and more

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

A new version of Google Maps has hit the Android Market today, which simultaneously brings fresher location tracking within Latitude and better battery life -- two welcome improvements that seem contrary to one another. There's also a couple goodies included for the transit-minded folks, as Navigation has been updated to better estimate location when GPS signal is lost, and the number of route options for public transit users has been increased from three to four. Sure, the changes are rather incremental, but who's honestly going to argue with greater battery life? Not us, that's for sure.

Google's Schmidt: No Android fragmentation, only differentiation - SlashGear

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

Google‘s Eric Schmidt has again denied there is any fragmentation problem within Android, claiming that the platform instead shows customer-friendly “differentiation.” Speaking at CES this week, where many manufacturers revealed devices running older versions of Android but promised Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades at some point later this year, Schmidt argued that “differentiation is positive, fragmentation is negative,” PCMag reports. The deciding factor, he claimed, was that apps ran across devices on different iterations of Android.

Atom chip on Android smartphones expected at CES

Posted on Jan 05, 2012 by MG3

LG Electronics and Samsung are expected to unveil Android smartphones next week that use Intel's latest Atom chip, dubbed Medfield, analysts said. The move, if it pans out, could portend a shift away from ARM-based chips, which are in 95 percent of smartphones.
The arrival of Atom-based smartphones at the International CES show in Las Vegas would join Google and Intel at the hip, said Jack Gold, an analyst at J. Gold Associates. With Google in the midst of acquiring Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion, at least some Motorola smartphones could be soon running Atom chips, as well.

According to Distimo, there are now over 400,000 apps in the Android Market

Posted on Jan 05, 2012 by MG1

The Android Market has reached a new milestone and is creeping closer towards the iOS app store according to the website Distimo which says there are now over 400,000 applications that can be downloaded now with two-thirds of them being free for the customer.
Crossing the 400,000 app mark is very impressive considering that it was just this past August when the Market hit the 300,000 plateau. This can be attributed to the fact that there are more than 100,000 developers making apps for Android.
Check out the chart that compares the growth between iOS and the Android Market. While it is clear that iOS was faster out of the gate, both platforms hit the 400,000 threshold at around the same ti...

HTC updates bootloader unlock utility to support latest Android lineup

Posted on Dec 30, 2011 by MG1

It wasn't long ago that HTC's bootloader unlock utility hit the masses, thereby righting the company's silly decision to lock its phones down in the first place. Now, continuing its commitment to mod-lovers and those who appreciate freedom, The House of Chou is announcing that its latest lineup of Android phones can find a similar (and proper) fate. The company has released an updated bootloader unlock tool that supports all Android devices released after September of this year. Naturally, this includes such handsets as the HTC EVO Design 4G, Rezound, Rhyme and Vivid. The company has yet to release an updated list of supported devices, but promises to do so in the coming days. While we're st...

Pentagon approves one Android device, still testing iOS

Posted on Dec 29, 2011 by MG1

It's just one more sign that BlackBerry is falling fast. Now, the US Pentagon has approved a modified Android device for use in the Department of Defense and is testing iOS devices for use as well. BlackBerry had always been the top choice for all government departments because of security concerns on other platforms, but those days are over.
The Pentagon has approved just one single Android device though. The Dell Venue is the only device to make the cut, and even then, it must be running Android 2.2 and have the Android Market removed before it can be used by DoD staff. Additionally, any web browsing done on the device must be routed through the DoD proxy server.
The Pentagon is still te...
