Garmin announced their Essentials line today - a line-up that includes basic GPS units in varying screen sizes with a reasonable list of features. The Garmin Nuvi 30 is a 3.5-inch basic GPS with turn by turn directions, spoken word directions, as well as junction view and lane assist.

One of the most confusing things about Garmin’s existing GPS product lineup—and this criticism applies to the entire portable navigation device (PND) market, not just Garmin—is that there are dozens of devices with near-identical names and feature sets. Worse, as new ones come out, the old ones are still available in Best Buy, on Amazon, and in other stores, often at deep discounts. That throws the entire notion of which devices are considered budget, midrange, or high-end into disarray, and makes it difficult for consumers to figure out which PND to buy.

Garmin is finally taking a stab at fixing this problem with its new 2012 lineup of nüvi devices, which the company unveiled this morning....
