As they continue to tighten their belt in this never-ending unpredictable market, Nokia is planning to close down its high-end Vertu handset business over in Japan – mainly due to some struggles it has been seeing of late over in the land of the rising sun.
Already, Nokia stopped selling their S40 and Symbian devices altogether over there, but they decided to keep around their Vertu business intact – well, all up until now. In fact, the Nikkei reports that the Finnish company will close down Vertu handset stores within Tokyo’s Shibuya and Ginza districts by the end of July. Taking into consideration the prevalence amongst smartphones, Vertu’s handsets are having a difficult time trying to se...

Nokia's N950 demos MeeGo Harmattan in marathon video

Posted on Jul 01, 2011 by MG1

Still obsessing about Nokia's N950 -- you know, the sexy developer-only MeeGo device you can't have? Before you let Elop rain on your parade, indulge yourself with an exhaustive 17 minute video from Thailand, dutifully documenting every nook and cranny of Espoo's ill-fated OS. The long-winded film tours the dialer, browser, and gives a peek at a plethora of camera settings -- like ISO, aspect ratio, and timers -- that we didn't get to see on the N9. Also making an appearance are maps with turn-by-turn navigation, what appears to be a document viewer, and a Facebook app. Go on, have a gander, and dream about a luscious MeeGo future that might have been.

U.S. And U.K. Latest Victims Of Nokia's Online Store Shutdowns

Posted on Jul 01, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: NOKIA

We already know that Nokia has started shutting down some of its online stores, such as those in Spain, France, and Finland, but we didn’t expect to see the U.S. and U.K. web outlets close so soon after.
That’s right folks, Nokia online is gone. Forever. In fact, the only online stores Nokia has left are in China, Portugal and a few South American countries. Luckily for the end user, Nokia phones are still available across a number of different online retailers including Amazon.
Go ahead and regulate your breathing, Nokia fans. Everything’s going to be fine. Well, everything will be fine as long as the Finnish phone giant wasn’t lying when it said these shut downs are about a transition to c...

Without much fanfare, Nokia has updated its C5-00 smartphone. The Symbian-based phone, now branded the C5-00 5MP, sports a 5.0-megapixel EDoF (enhanced depth of field) camera, an upgrade from its earlier 3.2-megapixel version. Other enhancements include a boost from 50MB to 270MB of internal storage to help handle photo demands and a doubling of RAM to 256MB.
The C5-00 5MP is a candybar smartphone. It comes with a 2.2 inch, 240x320 pixels display. Also integrated are GPS and a stereo FM radio.
Nokia launched the original C5-00 in March 2010. It has followed up with two additional models in the series, the touchscreen C5-03, and the 3G C5-04.
There has been much speculation as to how long Nok...

Nokia: there's still hope for MeeGo yet

Nokia: there's still hope for MeeGo yet

Posted on Jun 30, 2011 by MG1

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop's comments about the Nokia N9 being the last MeeGo phone may have been misinterpreted, according to a statement sent to TechRadar.
The Nokia N9 was recently announced with mostly positive first impressions, but according to Finnish site MTV3, Elop 'confirmed' that it would be the last MeeGo phone as the company looks to a new Windows Phone/Symbian era - although he was never directly quoted by the site.
Game over, or game on?
We spoke to Nokia to clarify the situation, and received the following response:
"Our primary smartphone platform will be Windows Phone – we have been very clear on this point – this is where we will be focusing our energies and resources as we go...

Nokia 700 Zeta with Symbian Belle Images Leaked

Nokia 700 Zeta with Symbian Belle Images Leaked

Posted on Jun 30, 2011 by MG1

Most Nokia news these days surrounds its Windows Phone 7 efforts, but the Nokia 700 “Zeta” reminds us that Symbian handsets are still floating in the pipeline. It looks like a nice phone for those who are looking for a simple smartphone without all the bells and whistles of the higher-end Android or Windows Phone devices out there. It is running Symbian Belle, the successor to Anna.
However, it doesn’t look like this will be a bottom-of-the-barrel device. Word is that it is equipped with a 1GHz processor, which is pretty much standard fare these days, 3.2-inch nHD AMOLED display (nHD is what Nokia uses for 640 x 360 resolution screens). The Nokia 700, or Zeta, is pretty lightweight at just 8...

Nokia issues software updates, new browser, to users of older hardware

If there’s one thing consumers hate more than overpaying for goods and services, it’s buying something that quickly becomes obsolete. These days you need to do a lot of research before signing a 2 year contract and taking home a new smartphone. Is it running the latest version of Android/Symbian, will it get updates, how many apps are available, etc.? Owners of Symbian S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 and Symbian S60 5th Edition (which some people also call Symbian^1) have had their devices for several years now, and while Nokia has issued a few firmware updates to address bugs, they haven’t really added any new features. That’s no longer the case according to a recent post on Nokia Conversati...

Nokia today announced that it plans to offer a system update to some of its legacy devices running Symbian 3.2 and 5.0 (a.k.a, S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2, and S60 5th Edition). The update will include the newest Symbian Anna browser, which adds support for non-ASCII characters, international domains, and will render web sites faster. The update will also refresh Ovi Maps, adding indoor positioning via Wi-Fi and Lonely Planet content for Symbian 3.2 devices, and public transport and check-in support for Symbian 5 devices. Last, all devices will have access to more emoticons. The system update, which starts today for select handsets, will be rolled out over time. The specific phones that w...

Nokia N9 photos look REALLY good

Nokia N9 photos look REALLY good

I am not a Nokia fan at all. The only Nokia device I have ever owned was a free phone a carrier gave me years, and years ago with one of my first wireless plans. I am still seeing little that would talk me out of my iPhone or an Android device for a Nokia today. What I will say is Nokia knows how to make a camera phone. The camera on my iPhone sucks to the point that I only use it in a pinch and then the photos are just not very high quality.
Nokia has been talking a lot about the camera module that its new N9 smartphone uses over the last few months. A week or so back we talked about Nokia boasting that the camera on the N9 was the fastest around and that it supported NFC image transfers. T...

Nokia's Ovi Store hits 6 million daily downloads

Nokia's Ovi Store hits 6 million daily downloads

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: NOKIA

Although it’s far from commanding a dominant market share in the U.S., Nokia’s Ovi Store keeps growing like crazy. According to this post on Nokia Developer’s portal, more than 300,000 new Nokia accounts are created daily, and consumers are downloading 6 million mobile apps and content every day!
In total, there are about 48,000 apps in the Ovi Store with almost 1,000 new added every week. And it’s not just the Symbian users who download apps and mobile content — Series 40 device (feature phone) owners are jumping on board as well, with the number of downloads coming from that group growing 35% in the last two months, accounting for about a quarter of all downloads.
By the end of May 2011, m...

Intel keeps MeeGo alive, Atom-powered Ice Cream Sandwich device due Q1 2012?

Intel keeps MeeGo alive, Atom-powered Ice Cream Sandwich device due Q1 2012?

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Nokia's N9 might have received generally warm reception, but the company's CEO has explicitly said that even if the device is successful, the Finns will ditch the platform in favor of Windows Phone, but even in the current light of events, Intel remains MeeGo's biggest loyalist. It has reiterated plans to continue working on the system with plans laid out through the second quarter of 2012, according to market watchers quoted by DigiTimes.
Intel plans to leverage its insight from PCs to MeeGo-running netbooks and tablets, but the company's plans are even broader as Meego version 1.3 comes with support for smart TVs, car infotainment and multimedia phones in the last quarter of 2011.

Nokia Money finally starts shipping after a nearly 2 year wait, comes preloaded on the X1-01 in India

Nokia Money finally starts shipping after a nearly 2 year wait, comes preloaded on the X1-01 in India

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Nokia announced “Nokia Money” back in late August 2009 and with it the promise to deliver a service that would let anyone with a mobile phone send and receive money using nothing more than a text message or phone call. Here we are, several days before the start of July 2011, and the Finnish handset maker has just now announced that Nokia Money is finally coming to market; India only for now. The service works thanks to partnerships with Union Bank of India, Yes Bank, and Obopay, which Nokia invested roughly $70 million in during March 2009. What about devices? The first handset to ship with Nokia Money preloaded will be the X1-01, one of Nokia’s first dual SIM devices, but nearly every phone...

Leaked Nokia Roadmap Promises Four New Symbian Handsets In Q3

Leaked Nokia Roadmap Promises Four New Symbian Handsets In Q3

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Nokia is all about the ladies. With Symbian, we have Anna and Belle iterations, with more girly names to follow in alphabetical order. And of course, who could forget that absolutely ridiculous female-targeted N8 commercial? It’s certainly burned into the corners of my memory, unfortunately. Today we came across a leaked roadmap for upcoming Symbian handsets, and we were surprised to see that Nokia has taken the lady-love a step further, giving girly names (at least for now) to four different upcoming Symbian phones.
There isn’t much to say yet about the Nokia Helen, Cindy, Zeta, and Fate, but one thing that was made pretty clear on the leaked document was that each will get a 1GHz processor...

Nokia N950: a N900 successor offered exclusively for developers

Nokia N950: a N900 successor offered exclusively for developers

Posted on Jun 28, 2011 by MG1

Despite what you’ve heard the Nokia N9 is not the only MeeGo smartphone in town. Nokia has quietly unveiled the N950, but with it one small caveat — it will be a developer-only device. Though it’s not destined for retail consumption, our inner N900 fanboy has us itching for a fix. Let’s take a look at what’s inside the Nokia N950, shall we?
At first glance the only difference between N9 and the N950 appears to be the addition of a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Upon further inspection you’ll notice the N950 features a 4-inch TFT display while the N9 packs a more vibrant 3.9-inch AMOLED set.
In terms of build quality the N950 is forged from anodized aluminum whereas the N9 is encased in unibody p...

Nokia N5 leak hints at slow Symbian death

Just when you thought that Windows Phone 7 (with a bit of help from MeeGo) had kicked the last breath out of Symbian, the Nokia N5 - boasting an updated version of Symbian Anna - goes and leaks all over the web.
We know that the days of the Nokia and Symbian love affair are numbered, with the final signatures now in place for all developing and support of Symbian up to Accenture from October 2011.
But we also know that Nokia CEO Stephen Elop has said the company plans an additional 10 Symbian-powered handsets over the next 12 months.
And it looks like the N5 could be the first of these handsets, with rumours of the N6 and N7 to follow doing the rounds as well, after it was snapped by Blurryc...
