The Mannheim Regional Court in Germany issued an injunction this morning against Apple, ruling that certain Apple email services infringed Motorola patent no. EP0847654. The ban is apparently focused on push email features available through Apple's iCloud and MobileMe services. However, unlike a separate ban Apple faced this morning relating to certain Apple 3G devices in Germany (which has now been temporarily suspended), the effect of this ruling will not be felt immediately. Let’s get it out of the way, it’s not the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update that some handset owners are dreaming about in their sleep, but rather, the Motorola ATRIX 2 is seeing nothing more than a maintenance update.

Nikesh Arora rumored to become Motorola CEO after acquisition

Nikesh Arora, Google’s SVP and Chief Business Officer, will run Motorola once the Google acquisition closes later this year, according to rumor published by Business Insider. Arora ran the company’s international business for Eric Schmidt, taking over the global business after the former CEO stepped down. Arora has reportedly been “agitating” for a CEO position and was included on a short list of candidates to head Yahoo. It is possible, however, that a promised CEO slot at Motorola could have prompted Arora to continue with Google. The rumor further notes that Dennis Woodside, Google’s current head of U.S. sales, will take over Arora’s current position.

The latest word on the Google-Motorola Mobility merger

Both Motorola Mobility and Google shareholders have voted to allow the purchase of the former by the latter for $12.5 billion. But that doesn't end the approvals necessary to get the deal closed. Besides the shareholders, two countries have signed off the deal, Turkey and Russia. Antitrust clearance, or waiting period expirations, are required for the U.S. Department of Justice, European Commission, Canada, China and Israel. In those countries, the deal can be approved by having the appropriate official sign the proper paperwork, or by letting a certain period of time go by without raising an objection to the merger.

Motorola RAZR Developer's Edition to come with unlocked bootloader

Motorola apparently plans on slicing and dicing the Motorola RAZR with the Motorola RAZR DE (Developer's Edition) coming in Europe with an unlocked bootloader out of the box. The company says that the phone "allows us to continue meeting our carrier and regulatory obligations, but also meets the needs being expressed by our developer community." Motorola's blog post (that has since been removed but remained on Google Reader), says that the MOTODEV site would offer support for unlocking, relocking and locating build files for the "DE' model.

Motorola Mobility loses $80m in Q4 on $3.4b revenue, ships 10.5m phones

As it prepares to be swallowed whole by Google, Motorola Mobility has come out with its Q4 and full-year 2011 numbers this afternoon. The most important figure — earnings — is in red ink territory this quarter with a loss of $80 million on revenue of $3.4 billion; in the fourth quarter of 2010, it had posted a $110 million profit.
The company's phone shipments are down, year over year: it sent out 10.5 million mobile devices overall in the quarter versus 11.3 million a year prior. In total, Moto shipped 42.4 million devices in 2011 — 18.7 million of which were smartphones. Another million were tablets, but Q4 was responsible for a dismal 200,000, so it would seem there was little or no boost...

Motorola files lawsuit against Apple citing patent infringements

Motorola Mobility is suing Apple for infringing on six of its patents. The patents in question are related to wireless antennas, software, messaging, and data management — quite a bit of the entire experience of a smartphone is on the line here. Apple allegedly uses these patents in the iPhone 4S and iCloud.
The lawsuit was filed in Florida today and it’s just the latest battle in the larger smartphone patent wars.

Consumer Watchdog Urges European Union to Block Google, Motorola Merger

Simpson, director of Consumer Watchdog's Privacy Project, inked a letter to Mr. Joaquin Almunia, vice president of the European Commission, voicing his organization's concerns over "Google's ongoing anti-competitive behavior," which includes the search giant's proposed $12.5 billion merger with Motorola Mobility. The nearly 3-page letter criticizes Google's business behavior in detail with a particular focus on why Consumer Watchdog feels the merger with Motorola should be blocked.

Verizon has finally cut short the waiting game and announced that the Maxx is out on January 26 for $299 on-contract. Motorola is looking for 1,000 owners of the Motorola PHOTON 4G to take part in a "soak test" of a software update. As we've pointed out before, this is how Motorola can test an update with a limited number of devices involved just in case there is a problem that requires more work on the software. Also, those testing the update give the manufacturer another set of eyes and ears that might be able to find a bug that somehow slipped past Motorola's own testing.

Verizon's Droid RAZR gets violet coat of paint, price tumbles to $200 on contract

Motorola has already unveiled the RAZR's bigger, battery-savvy brother, the Maxx, but it's not yet done with the original kevlar-skinned smartphone. Yes, the RAZR will get a color palette refresh for the new year, with Verizon readying a metallic purple edition for just under $200 -- that's a hundred bucks less than what Big Red hopes you'll lay down for the newer Maxx. EU to decide on Google, Motorola Mobility deal on February 13th

The Google, Motorola Mobility deal is still awaiting regulatory approval from both the U.S. and the EU. Last month, the later of the two had suspended the January 10th deadline while waiting to receive additional information on the acquisition from Google.
Reuters is reporting that the EU regulators have set a new deadline of February 13, 2012 in order to decide whether or not Google may proceed with its purchase of Motorola Mobility. We are left to assume they have received all the required information about the deal and are using this time to reach a decision.

DROID RAZR's price drops to $199.99 at Verizon

Now that it has the new DROID RAZR MAXX, it’s only natural Verizon will slash the price of the original DROID RAZR. And that’s exactly what the carrier did, offering the thin-smartphone for $199.99 with a two-year contract.
