Google accuses Microsoft of revealing 'highly confidential source code'
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftGoogle
Google has accused Microsoft of leaking “highly confidential source code” related to its open-source Android operating system. According to PaidContent, the search giant asked a federal United States International Trade Commission judge to sanction Microsoft after it spilled the beans on Google’s source code to a witness in Microsoft’s ongoing patent battle with Motorola. Reportedly, the witness, Dr. Robert Stevenson, has acted as a consultant for both HP and Microsoft, which Google views as “direct competitors.” Microsoft is suing Motorola because it believes Motorola’s Android-powered smartphones infringe on its patents. Microsoft responded to Google and said that Stenvenson only had “two ...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7.5
The Mango update to WP7, with its 500+ new features, is now supposed to land on September 1st, which means that we'll probably see the new handsets that will be rocking it in greater detail then. Apple's iOS 5 update will most likely be available in September too, and Google's Android Ice Cream Sandwich is allegedly pulled to October, in order to fight the competition sooner than planned.

Images and video of new Nokia Windows Phone handsets surface: leaked or faked?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsMicrosoftNOKIAWindows Phone 7
Are those the upcoming Nokia Windows Phone handsets? Hard to tell, but the video and images below sent to MyNokiaBlog from a tipster claiming to be a Microsoft insider (even though using an OVI email account) look very polished and professionally done. Sure, the video below mashes together seemingly new content with old marketing stuff, including some old Microsoft Office Labs footage. But while those could be manipulated images (likely taken from the video below), hands down to the artist, who could well defend a thesis on faking pictures in Photoshop.

Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
Skype’s forthcoming Windows Phone app will integrate deeper than the Skype app for both the iPhone and Android devices. After its $8.5 billion acquisition by Microsoft is approved by European regulators (expected by the end of the year), the future Skype division of Microsoft has plans to make Skype functionality an integral component of the Windows Phone experience. Skype’s VP of products and marketing, Neil Stevens, says that Skype plans on creating a different kind of app, something that feels part of the phone

Windows Phone 7 to make iOS and Android look outdated says Nokia's president
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftAppleNOKIAGoogleiOS 4Windows Phone 7Android 2.3
Nokia president and head of North American operations, Chris Weber (no, not the former NBA star) has laid down the gauntlet. In an interview yesterday, the Nokia executive said that Windows Phone 7 makes iOS and Android look outdated. Weber says the big difference between the platforms is that while iOS and Android are built around apps, Windows Phone 7 is built around a user's contacts making things easier and quicker with some functions requiring fewer steps.

Microsoft adding speech recognition tech to Windows 8, next generation products
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Microsoft’s internal Tellme team is working on implementing speech recognition software into the Redmond-based firm’s portfolio of software and hardware products. Microsoft will build the feature into its new Windows 8 operating system, its Bing search engine, Windows Phone, Kinect and Xbox, Azure and other products, ZDNET has learned. We already know Microsoft’s upcoming Windows Phone Mango release will offer voice-to-text and text-to-voice functionality, but Tellme senior director of sales and marketing Ilya Bukshteyn told ZDNET‘s Mary Jo Foley that the HTML 5 speech tag will allow Microsoft to develop Windows 8 applications that are “speech capable.”

Motorola Wants Some of That Windows Phone 7 Pie That Nokia's Eating
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftNOKIAMotorolaWindows Phone 7
Sanjay Jha, Motorola's CEO, has commented that he wishes Motorola could get a similar deal to Nokia's with Microsoft, which sounds funny as the general opinion is that since they adopted Android, Motorola's got their shit together in recent years.

Microsoft Squashes 20-Year-Old 'Ping of Death' Bug
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
Perhaps motivated by Duke Nukem Forever shipping after a decade-and-a-half of development and delays, Microsoft decided to finally patch a vulnerability dating back to the 1990s. Included in yesterday's Patch Tuesday bulletin bonanza is a little nugget listed as CVE-2011-1871, which according to ComputerWorld.com is a fix for the dreaded 'Ping of Death,' or at least it was dreaded some two decades ago.

Windows 7 will dominate by year's end, Gartner says
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 7
Windows 7 will become the world's most-installed PC operating system by the end of this year, according to a Gartner forecast that sees Linux rising to just 2 percent of desktop share in five years. Meanwhile, Windows is also popular as a development environment, a field in which Linux has slipped to third place behind Mac OS, says Evans Data.
Gartner's Aug. 9 forecast suggests great things are in store for Windows during 2011. But other statements made by the research firm hint that the year could see what amounts to a high water mark for Redmond's well-known operating system.
According to Gartner, 94 percent of new PCs will be shipped with Windows 7 in 2011. By the end of the year, Windows...

Motorola wants same deal as Nokia from Microsoft
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesMicrosoftNOKIAMotorola
At a recent industry conference Motorola Mobility’s Sanjay Jha has confirmed once again that they are open to developing a Windows Phone 7 handset.
"I think we’re completely open to the notion of Windows as a platform," Jha said in an appearance at the Oppenheimer Technology & Communications Conference.
He confirmed however that they would only do it if they achieved special partner status like Nokia has, saying otherwise that at present "clearly, all of our focus today is on Android."
Jha was still waiting to see which OS will shake it for the 3rd place, saying only one of Windows Phone 7, webOS and RIM can survive.
While Motorola has seen an early revival from adopting Android, the compan...

Windows Phone 7 Marketplace being blocked by the Great Firewall of China?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
WPSauce reports that for the past 3 days Chinese users on many of the big ISPs there are having trouble accessing the Windows Phone 7 marketplace.
He was however able to access Marketplace fine when using a WIFI hotspot connected via VPN to USA, suggesting that Marketplace was being blocked by Chinese ISPs.
The Android Market apparently had the same issues in the past, forcing Motorola to ship their own custom market for Chinese phones.
It is not known as yet if this blockage is by accident or on purpose or how long it will last, but such a geographic fracturing can certainly not be good for Marketplace.

Windows Phone 7 data hog bug back with Mango?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7.5
Soon after the US launch of Windows Phone 7 users were discovering their phones transferring hundreds of megabytes of data each day. It turned out to be a Yahoo Mail bug affecting many other smartphones.
Now Kishan writes us with an interesting question:
My wp7 phone after mango beta 2 is sending lot of data on 3G – here is a sample – 400Mb on 08/06, 256Mb on 08/05 etc.. I have Yahoo mail sync\’ed, so could be the old yahoo mail bug. Testing currently to see if I still see the issue after disabling Yahoo mail. Do you know if anyone else is seeing the same issue?
Have any of our readers run into the same issue? With data being rationed ever more severely and costing more and more it is cert...

Microsoft Potentially Dropping Dolby Support in Windows 8
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Native media playback support has been steadily improving in Windows over the years, but what most people don’t realize is that this functionality comes at a price. Dozens of third party licensing agreements are needed to playback all the different forms of audio and video you’re likely to stumble across, and over the years Dolby has benefited quite handsomely from the inclusion of its Dolby Digital Plus pack into Microsoft’s operating systems.
Dolby’s offerings are one of the key technologies behind native DVD support in Windows, and on Friday the company was forced to admit to investors Microsoft has indicated it will not be licensing any Dolby products in Windows 8. This doesn’t necessar...

Microsoft Launches $200,000 Security Innovation Contest

At the Black Hat conference in Las Vegas, Microsoft announced a contest for excellence in defensive security technology. Dubbed "Blue Hat," the contest focuses on "the most effective ways to prevent the use of memory safety vulnerabilities."
Current technologies in this area include Data Execution Prevention (DEP) and Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR). Data Execution Prevention blocks attacks that force malicious code into memory areas marked as data. ASLR bollixes malware that needs to find certain code elements at specific addresses. Both Windows and iOS use ASLR.

Microsoft says Google is lying in its complaints about patent hoarding
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftGoogle
Apple sat quiet following Google Chief Legal Officer David Drummond’s rant yesterday, as it always does, but Microsoft was not content letting Drummond air his grievances without responding. Drummond on Wednesday penned a post on Google’s blog claiming that Apple, Microsoft and other companies are joining together to “strangle” Android with patent complaints. With all of the patent-related lawsuits against Android partners right now, this certainly seems like a valid complaint. Highlighting a specific example, Drummond wrote that the companies are “banding together to acquire Novell’s old patents (the “CPTN” group including Microsoft and Apple) and Nortel’s old patents (the ‘Rockstar’ group ...
