Gingerbread update for Verizon's LG Revolution is being pushed out as we speak
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsLGVerizon WirelessGoogleAndroid 2.3Revolution
Sure it might have been the least favorable of the initial three 4G LTE smartphone offerings from Verizon Wireless, but in any event, the LG Revolution is finally packing its Froyo bags and moving right up to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Naturally, the wait was a lengthy one for handset owners, but it’s nonetheless ever so sweet for them.
Bringing up its software version to VS910ZV7, the update brings forth the entire usual suspect of features commonly associated with the sweet tasting snack. Beyond that, it packs along a few things that enhance both the email and messaging experience. And of course, it’s packing some other enhancements and bug fixes to fine tune the overall experience for users...

Google TV 2.0 adds Android Market access
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google has announced version 2.0 of its Google TV software, bringing a Honeycomb flavoured Android experience to the table.
The key new addition to the Google TV setup is the Android Market, although not all apps are supported for obvious reasons. There is, of course, no GPS or telephony based apps on offer and because your TV isn't a ruddy great touchscreen (if it is, you're lucky) then the majority of touch based apps won't work either. So that's most of them.
But the Big G has promised that "50 developers have seeded the Market with cool and useful apps for the TV" and that it is "excited to see the number of apps grow".
The new version has been given a more simple UI with customisable ho...

How To Activate Google+ in Google Apps
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
When Google opened Google+, the search giant's social network, to the public, it was the exclusive plaything of Google personal account holders. That changed with yesterday's announcement that Google Apps, the company's Web-based application suite for businesses and organizations, is now compatible with Google+.
Google Apps users now have access to the same feature set as other Google+ social networkers "and more," according to Google. With Google+, you can share information and engage in conversations with "Circles." In addition, you can video chat, screen share, and edit Google Docs with multiple friends and colleagues via "Hangouts with extras."
Naturally, if you've already built a signif...

It’s Time For Google To Let Google Voice Live Up To Its Promise
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Last week TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington wrote a post highlighting the fact that iPhone users can get a surprisingly good experience using Google Voice if they’re willing to switch to Sprint. Google Voice on the iPhone typically has some hurdles, mostly because Apple won’t let the native Google Voice app ‘take over’ the dialer the way it can on Android (not to mention the fact that the iOS GV app is notoriously buggy). But Sprint has done some unique, deep integration at the carrier level that minimizes these issues.
His post got me thinking about my experience with Google Voice since I began using it exclusively in November 2009. My conclusion: there are a lot of areas for improvement...

Samsung Italy: Galaxy S II, Galaxy Note and dual-core tablets getting Android 4.0 update
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungGoogleGalaxy S IIGALAXY NoteAndroid 4.0
Samsung Italy has apparently confirmed that the company’s high-end devices (i.e. those with a dual-core processor) will all get the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update. In other words, the list of products that will be blessed with the latest version of Android includes:
Galaxy S II
Galaxy Note
Galaxy Tab 10.1
Galaxy Tab 8.9
Galaxy Tab 7.7
Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus
We assume the carrier specific versions of the Galaxy S II will also get the same treatment though not as fast as the unlocked device. Moreover, we would hope to see some of the phones with a fast single-core processor (1.4 GHz) on the list, like the Galaxy W or T-Mobile Exhibit II, but I guess Samsung is still evaluating that option....

GameStop testing sales of Android tablets in 200 stores
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that during this holiday season, retailer GameStop will put specialized Android tablets in 200 stores to see how well they sell. The tablets, made by Asus, Acer and Samsung, will each come with seven free games including EA's "Dead Space", and will be offered at the same price you would see at other stores. Although the tablets will support GameStop's new controller out of the box, it must be purchased separately at the store.
Last month, we reported that GameStop was planning on offering its own Android tablets to sell in its stores. Besides offering pre-installed games, console quality content would be streamed from the cloud using the controller. The i...

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich not coming to LG Optimus 2X?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsLGGoogleOptimus 2XAndroid 4.0
Well, this doesn’t bode well for LG. Recently the handset-maker confirmed on Facebookthat the Optimus 2X will not receive the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update, even though it was only released in January of this year. This likely means that the T-Mobile G2X won’t be getting the update, either.
Back when we reviewed the Optimus 2X and T-Mobile G2X, we had very few negative things to say about the dual-core toting handsets. With the Optimus 2X being the first dual-core phone and managing to get itself into the Guinness Book of World Records, the future looked bright for the handset.
After a rather glowing review of the T-Mobile G2X, the problems began. Random reboots, or just shutting off...

Android Winning In China, But The Market Is Going Through A Chaotic Phase
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
t the Android Fever panel here at Disrupt Beijing, Wang Hua of Innovation Works, John Lagerling, Director of Android Global Partnerships at Google, and David Chao of DCM. These folks are bullish on Android, noting that there are currently 40 million android phones in country and that China is number three in terms of development kit downloads.
“The Android market in China is going through a chaotic phase,” said David Chao. He, like Hua and Lagerling, is betting that Android is going to win the day in China, especially in the lower end of the market.
“Nokia is dying much faster than we expected,” said Hua. In the lower-price space, Android is quickly replacing feature phones in the entry-leve...

Google spent $1.4 billion acquiring 57 companies in 2011
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
If you thought that the purse strings over in Mountain View might be running a bit tight following the decision to fork out $12.5 billion on Motorola (a deal that has yet to be finalised) then think again.
In 2011 the company has acquired no fewer than 56 companies and startups, shelling out a whopping $1.4 billion in the process.
The figures came to light after the Big G filed its Form 10-Q accounts with the United States Securities and Commission board, detailing all of its financial info for the current annum.
Last year it acquired 48 companies and that without the huge takeover of one of the world's largest mobile communication businesses.
The big outlays for Google were $676 million tak...

Nexus One denied Ice Cream Sandwich, becomes official relic of Android's yesteryears
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleNexus OneAndroid 4.0
If you're still clinging fast to Google's first ever Nexus device, now might be the time to start eyeing an upgrade. While the search giant's solidly confirmed an Ice Cream Sandwich destiny for owners of its penultimate Android flagship, the Nexus S, the same cannot be said for its HTC-made progenitor. It's not as though Mountain View's lost any love for its game-changing dev phone, rather that handset's 2010 guts just aren't up to snuff for the 4.0 polish. Besides, there are plenty of other more attractive and able-bodied smartphones to help you through the mourning process.

Your HTC Android phone can haz 5GB of Dropbox storage for free now
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsHTCGoogleAndroid
HTC just made the morning for many of its fans. You don't need to go to the cloud, the cloud can come to you, is HTC's logic for partnering with Dropbox, and they have good reasoning. Why spend on R&D, when there are numerous great cloud storage services out there you can just team up with?
The Taiwanese announced via Twitter that they will be pairing 5GB of free storage with each HTC Android device, which is a more generous offer than the usual 2GB Dropbox gives to the freeriding subscribers, and equals HTC with storage offerings like iCloud, for example. The HTC Windows Phones don't need this for obvious reasons, since they already come with the 25GB free storage of SkyDrive.
The smartphon...

Nexus S port of Ice Cream Sandwich is available, if you can stand some rough edges
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsGoogleNexus SAndroid 4.0
Why wait to get an official bite of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich when you can load it on your Nexus S right now? After a quick tease a few days ago, an early preview is available to all thanks to a few hard working developers, although beezy's post on Android Central warns you may have to live without WiFi and Bluetooth for the time being. His build is only tested on the Sprint Nexus S 4G, although concurrent work posted at XDA-Developers should give 3G Nexus S owners a shot at the port as well. As usual with these early tester ROMs YMMV, but those who enjoy life on the bleeding edge can hit the source links for more info.
